My interest in photography began in 1958 when my Cub Scout Den Master offered to teach a Merit Badge course to a group of ten year old kids.My dad handed me an old, black leatherette covered Kodak "box" camera he had used to shoot black & white prints in the 1930s. It wasn't much of a camera, but that was the beginning of my love affair with capturing images that I still enjoy looking at after a half century.For the past few years, I've been combing through old scrapbooks, slides, negatives, prints, and documents in an effort to permanently save those images to disk and share them with family members and close friends. I'm not an absolute expert, but it's been a great journey and one well worth the effort.If you have a similar desire, but don't feel the inclination to tackle this type of project yourself, I can help you achieve the results you're looking for. If you are like most people, your slides are already in carousel trays so they were easy to view with a projector on a screen. Or, they may still be in the small original paper boxes when each roll of film was originally processed. I have discovered that Kodachrome, in particular, has held up rather well over the years while many other transparency films have been less stable. With each passing year, you can expect your slides to gradually degrade -- even if they have been stored in a cool and dry environment. So, stop putting it off. It's time to pull them out of storage, sort them out, and have them digitally scanned as permanent visual records -- easily shared with others and viewed on your computer or TV.

As with slides, the most common film size for amateur photographers was 35mm available in both color and black & white. Other sizes included 126 for Kodak's Instamatic cameras, 110 and APS cassettes. Over the years, color negatives have had a tendency to darken considerably which can, increasingly, make it more difficult to correct exposures. Have your old negatives scanned to disk before it's too late!

You probably have countless envelopes, boxes, cookie tins and scrapbooks full of them. Some of them may be quite old and slightly faded and chances are that you never had the negatives because it was customary for the portrait studios to retain them. Prints come in all sizes from smaller "wallet" to 8" x 12". Wouldn't it be great to get re-aquainted with your family history again and create a visual family tree?

Color Correction

Pictures of young children with family pets can be priceless. The original image was shot with Kodak Ektachrome Slide Film in 1960 which has developed a magenta cast over the past 50 years. Too bad the proud father didn't get closer with the camera and compose his shot a little better.

This is the same image doctored a bit. I zoomed in a little, added more concrete sidewalk above the baby's head, re-cropped and color corrected. Not perfect, but it now comes to life.

Who didn't have one of these back in the '70s? An original 35mm color NEGATIVE produced this image of a Volkswagen Beetle I owned in 1972. At first glance, it looks pretty good, but that "fire engine" red is washed out.

That's better! With some minor adjustments and dust spots removed, my old bug looks the way I remember it.

This photo was taken of a family member way back in 1957, so it's over 50 years old. The image appears a little under-exposed, the color and contrast are a bit flat, and there is a nasty yellow splotch of fungus that couldn't be removed from the film.

The first thing I did was tilt the image slightly to the left so everything appears level. There was too much empty space on the right, so I zoomed in a little and re-cropped the image. With digital software I was able to eradicate all traces of the bright yellow fungus and got rid of scratches and dust spots. Finally, I increased the contrast and made some color corrections. It will never be perfect, but certainly nice enough to print or view on a computer or TV.

A cute little kid sitting in a huge chair has all the makings of a great shot. But, sometimes, we don't always pay attention to what is actually captured inside the viewfinder. The image was shot too low (nearly cropping the baby's head) and off center (too much cluttered space on the right).
After studying the original, I made the decision to change the format from HORIZONTAL to VERTICAL. But, doing so meant I had to create some more "chair" at the top. It's not perfect, but making these changes certainly places more focus on the subject.
Resolution
Viewing Your ImagesKnowing which scan resolution works best depends on the end result. While some professional photographers intend to reproduce their images in large scale requiring expensive, high-end scanning equipment, most of us do not for ordinary viewing on TV screens or computer monitors. Remember, the higher the resolution, the larger the file size, the slower the images loads, the more disk space is needed, etc.
What About Prints? Prints measuring up to about 6 x 9 inches require a resolution of about 300 dpi (dots per inch) to capture good detail. That is why 35mm slides and negatives, which only measure about 1" x 1.5", are scanned at 1800 dpi.1" x 1.5" _ 1800 dpi for slidesis equivalent to6" x 9" _ 300 dpi for printsIf you plan to print larger than about 6 x 9, you may want to consider having your slides and negatives scanned at higher resolutions by companies so equipped.

I've discovered that an image with sharp focus sized to 7 x 5 inches and scanned at 200 dpi (a resolution of 1400 x 1000) displays very well on both my 1280i HDTV and 17-inch computer monitor.
