Organization

The Georgetown University Student Investment Fund (GUSIF) was founded in 1997 by undergraduate students in the McDonough School of Business. GUSIF currently manages about $400 thousand, and is in the process of receiving new funds that will more than double AUM over the next two years. The Fund manages monies for the Endownment, Alumni Association, and SIPS Fund.

GUSIF's purpose is two-fold: (I) fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities by achieving above-market returns, and (II) educate its membership through training and real-world experience. GUSIF develops some of the top undergraduate talent, which has gone onto work in a wide variety of fields from investment banking to consulting.

The Fund dedicates itself to a strong investment philosophy and management principles. The organization is open to all students with all experience levels. The fund rewards those who demonstrate insight and dediciation to the organization.

The Fund consists of various tiers of members each with various responsibilities. GUSIF is organized into seven industries and each holds many critical roles fulfilled by members.

Investment

The GUSIF investment philosophy incorporates many disciplines and styles; however, at our core we are a value-oriented investment fund that focuses on long term industry trends, corporate strategy, and financial stability. We are both a top-down investment fund as we focus on strategy and a bottom-up fund as we focus on financial metrics. We take a holistic approach.

Corporate Strategy

Company's competitive advantage, future innovation, management, differentiate secular as opposed to cyclical growth.

Financial Statement Analysis

Work with financial statements, evaluating financial metrics.

Equity Valuation

Perform both comps and DCF valuation.

Principles

GUSIF lives by strong management principles and values. It is necessary to hold true to certain core principles in order to continue to develop as an organization. Without accountability organizations come and fall; perserving our values makes us the organization we aspire to become.

Membership

Executive Board

The board is responsible for fund leadership and investment strategy. The board consists of seven members, including the following: Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer, President, Director of Performance, Director of Trading & Education, Director of Human Capital, and Director of Public Relations.

Industry Leadership

This includes the portfolio managers (PMs) and vice presidents (VPs) of each of the seven industries. Industry leaders are responsible for managing their respective sectors, and are expected to deliver above-market returns and manage their industry membership.

Industry Members

Membership includes investment analysts and reseach associates which belong to each industry and assist the PMs and VPs in the fund's analysis and idea generation.

Industries

GUSIF has seven different industries in which analysts may partake:

Technology, Media, Telecom - electronics, semiconductors, software, internet, wireless and cable, media and adversiting companies

Consumer & Retail - apparel, restaurants, retailers, education, and food and household products

Heatlhcare - life sciences, health services, medical technology, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals

Industrials - aerospace and defense, transportation, construction/infastructure, diversified industrials, forest products and packaging

Natural Resources - energy, power, chemicals, metals and mining and alternative energy fields

Financials - banks, insurance, asset management, financing, credit card, specialty finance institutions

Real Estate - range of organizations that buy, sell and develop land, mostly REITs

Roles

Portfolio Manager

Responsible for leadership and overall investment strategy.

Vice President

Responsible for news and assisting the PM in leadership duties.

Investment Analyst

Responsible for equity research and investment idea generation.

Research Associate

Responsible for assisting in research and holding reports.
