The Alpha Delta Phi Society is a self-governing, coeducational organization dedicated to cultivating character, scholarship, and enduring friendships. Our literary tradition fosters life-long intellectual growth, mentoring, and achievement among our members. Our undergraduate members invite you to learn more about our community.

History of the Society

The Alpha Delta Phi Society was formed in 1992 by four chapters which had previously been associated with the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity. By mutual agreement of all involved chapters, the Alpha Delta Phi subdivided, with the four chapters becoming the new Alpha Delta Phi Society and the remainder retaining the name of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity. Any history of the Society, then, must begin with a history of the Fraternity.The Alpha Delta Phi was founded at Hamilton College, in upstate New York, in 1832. The College, having gone through some rough times over the past several years, was steadily rebuilding itself from a low point of only nine students in 1829. At almost every college in those days there were at least two intensely rivalrous societies. At Hamilton, the Phoenix and Philopeuthian Societies had uneasily coexisted since 1815. Both resorted to incredible strategems and machinations to increase their membership, and thus their prestige. The cut-throat competition reached its peak during the period of Hamilton's revival when the societies were also struggling to regain their vantage ground.Samuel Eells was among the large number of students who were disgusted with the partisan practices of the literary societies. After being pressured to join the Philopeuthians, Eells began to contemplate forming a new society of "higher nature, and more comprehensive and better principles; one that should combine all the advantages of a union for intellectual and literary purposes, and at the same time maintain the integrity of youthful character."In the winter of 1832, four other Hamilton students joined Eells in founding Alpha Delta Phi. Among those present was John S. Underwood, a delegate to the first two Republican conventions and the Federal district court judge who presided over the treason trial of Jefferson Davis. Alpha Delta Phi grew quickly, having the distinctions of being the first Greek letter society to establish a chapter west of the Allegheny mountains (at Miami University, in Ohio), as well as the first fraternity on eleven other campuses, including Columbia, Yale, Amherst, Brown and Harvard.By 1970, Alpha Delta Phi chapters existed across the United States and Canada. But the late 60's and 70's were not a good time for fraternities. The notion of a secretive group of men meeting together didn't fit with the views and attitudes spreading across college campuses. Several Alpha Delta Phi chapters reinvented themselves as co-educated houses. Thus began a twenty year struggle by the co-ed chapters to achieve full recognition for their female members.After a series of less-than-ideal comprises, it became clear to all involved that the co-ed chapters could not peacefully co-exist with the rest of the Fraternity. In 1990, the co-ed chapters led the drive to form the Alpha Delta Phi Society, an organization separate from, but parallel to, the Fraternity. On Friday August 7th, 1992, the split was unanimously agreed upon at the annual Fraternity convention.The four founding chapters of the Society were Brunonian, Columbia, Middletown and Stanford. The Bowdoin chapter, which had been required to withdraw from the Fraternity by the administration of Bowdoin College, joined the Society at the Society's first convention, held at Wesleyan University in August 1993. Granite

History of the Granite Chapter

"Okay, so is everyone okay with Granite for our new name? Right. We are now officially the Granite Affiliate."The history of the founding of the Alpha Delta Phi gets a marvelously eloquent quotation from a man named Simon North as its opening passage; we get this. But despite the humble appearance, it was that moment, sitting in an armchair on the top floor of Murkland Hall on the night of December 6, 2007, that I fully realized the finality of the situation. The ten of us, at that moment, were committed to gathering our spirit and taking on the seemingly monumental task of starting a new Greek chapter at UNH in Durham--a campus with a lot of hoops through which to jump--despite our status as almost total strangers and busy college students. A couple of future friends of the Phi would ultimately leave the group, but the majority of that nervous, tired bunch would eventually succeed in becoming the very first class of the Granite Chapter of the Alpha Delta Phi Society.That success was largely due to the effort of one Sister, Meredith L. Lee, the Granite Chapter's first President. Without her effort, the Granite Chapter (as of the time of this writing and hereafter in this history, still known as the Granite Affiliate) would not be. It was she who gathered a surprisingly large group of people one night in late November 2007 to the entrance of the Milne Museum at the Dimond Library here at the University, a largely unrelated group save through herself. Despite the uncertainties ahead of her, she committed to bringing together these unrelated people; a mere six days after the founding on that frigid December night, she managed to obtain recognition of ADP as a student organization by the University, and only nine days later, on December 21, the Granite Affiliate was officially recognized by the Alpha Delta Phi Society National. And finally, in February of 2008, she cemented our place on campus by gaining recognition of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) of UNHa daunting task, considering she was the only female among an all-male council with a considerable bias against co-ed societies. She was the constant go-to person if any one of us had any questions regarding the time our only connection to the Society at large. In short, she is everything we could have hoped for in a Founder.The first true bonding experience among the future Granite members (or Stones, as we are fondly referred to by several alumni) was during a dinner at the house of Professor R. Scott Smith, a professor of Classics at the University and the Granite Affiliates newly chosen faculty advisor. This was when we met our first Brother and pledgemaster, Becky Rush, an energetic and encouraging presence in our pledge process and the Society in general, who brought many stories and much cheer. For many, it was the turning point from indecision to commitment to joining the Society and the first night where the soon-to-be-siblings got to be comfortable around each other, building a sense of camaraderie. Sadly, one member at the dinner was not able to join that semester, and even Professor Smith was to be pledged at his own unique ceremony because of professorial commitments.The nine of us who could pledge the Society together finally did meet the Brotherhood at large when the time came to attend our very first pledge ceremony. On Saturday, January 26th, the first pledge class of the Granite Affiliate met with a warm reception from the overwhelming number of ADP Brothers and Sisters from around the northeast that had gathered to New Hampshire solely for the occasion the night was a huge success, and the first pledge class of the Granite Affiliate was formed: Ashley Auger, Patrick Connelly, Cullen DeLangie, Griffen Stone Fletcher, Becky Gallant, Abby Kendall, Meredith Lee, Amanda McManus and Chantel Sheets.With the help of undergraduates and alumni, Big Siblings, an invaluable trio of pledgemasters in Brothers MC Chan (MID), Becky Rush (BDN) and Kristen K2 Soule (BRN), and each other, we spent a month learning about the history and traditions of the Society and formulating our own. The road trips, the song singing, the lessons on brotherhood, the funny skits, the acceptance into IFC and the many personal anecdotes from as many Brothers and Sisters all cemented our relationship as pledges, and as Initiation approached, the group became less a gathering of interests and more of a second family--a true Brotherhood.But it was not without some sadness. One week before Initiation at Middletown, Griffen Fletcher, then a freshman at the University and a beloved member of the pledge class, de-pledged for personal reasons. The rest of the class, saddened by his departure, felt a crushing blow. The loss of Griffen was a painful one, but supportive of his choice, we rallied. We, as a group, decided to make Griffen Stone Fletcher our first official Friend of the House, a natural tradition that quickly grew to include other non-members, such as Ashley Compagna, David Ferrara, and Julia Chan.Finally, after a month of trials both academic and emotional, the Stones traveled to the Middletown Chapter for their very first Initiation. The Middletown House welcomed the class with open arms and plenty of friendship, and the night before Initiation was filled with stories, songs, pranking and preparation for the coming ceremony. And on the first of March 2008, the first pledge class of the newly formed Granite Affiliate became fully-fledged Brothers and sisters of the Alpha Delta Phi Society.It wasnt long before the new Granite Siblings turned right around and began their own Rush period, and pledged their first class, bringing us to the present period in the history of the Chapter. It is a short history, to say the least, but the potential is boundless. The Granite Brothers and Sisters devise new traditions every day, and new history happens with each passing hour. And despite the obstacles that lie ahead for the Affiliate--reaching full Chapter status, acquiring a Chapter House, and growing in number--the Brotherhood in New Hampshire is off to a hopeful and excited start. --written by Cullen DeLangie
