This book club has been years in the making so I am so excited to kick things off. After years of recommending books and having such positive feedback (and plenty of questions and discussions) I felt it important to bring all these like - minded people together. My thoughts are as follows: read a range of different books which highlight a number of different areas including spirituality, self love and relationships, business and abundance consciousness, law of attraction, health and beauty.
I hope to discuss a number of classics as well as many new releases that I absolutely love. I have had a thought about times and would like to propose two offerings, The first Wed morning of each month at 9.30am and the 3rd wed night of the month at 6.30pm. I will offer different books on each of these events for those of you that may want to attend both book clubs.
My intention is to create a book club that also works as a mini workshop where we can work through questions from the text and discuss issues as they relate to our own lives. The cost for this event will be $20pp and book club members will receive a discount of !0% off the cost of the book. I also will create opportunities for one on one sessions if you would like to work more thoroughly on the book in relation to your own personal issues.
Please let me know if you are interested to join or have any further thoughts or suggestions,
Best regards
Kymberley

A Vietnamese refugee whose family settled in Australia when he was very young. He has since become rather a beloved stand-up comic/actor/personality and writer (screen and book) in Australia. Hes always made me laugh when Ive seen him on television - but this book not only made me laugh, it made me cry. The refugee boat journey was horrific, truly terrible - they are all lucky to have survived. On the other hand, Australians are the lucky ones to have this marvellous man and his family living here. A beautiful auto-biography, honest, funny, and poignant. Intensely moving and wonderful to read
- MALVINA YOCK.
My book of the year for 2011 and a work of such magnitude that I cant envisage anything coming close to it when it comes to the Australian literary awards season. Based loosely on the lives of Sunday Reed, Sidney Nolan and one of this countries most famous art movements, it captivates throughout and leaves me in no doubt that Miller is, at the very least, one of this country's greatest living writers - GRANT.
Could have been harrowing and distressing, but it wasn't. It's the story of a young 5 year-old boy who lives in a room with his mother. I wont divulge other details lest the storyline be destroyed for someone. It had the potential to be absolutely horrifying and ghastly but was instead loving and triumphant. Makes a lasting impression
This book just wont leave me alone! It's been months since I read it and the characters just don't go away. Beautiful writing style and the brother sister relationship is so special

THE SECRET HISTORY
Donna Tartt
They were originally five. Elliot. Brian. Tallis. Cameron. And Dylan charismatic Dylan the mediator, the leader, the man each one turned to in a time of crisis. Five close friends, bonded in college, still coming together for their annual trip to Las Vegas. This year, they are not just bound by a common tradition, but by a common loss: that of Dylan, killed in a road accident the previous year. Yet what is intended as a celebration of Dylans life becomes a frightening confrontation with the past. Upon arrival in Vegas, each of the remaining four friends receives an envelope, one that contains evidence of their most private secrets. These secrets haunt each of their respective owners, yet were only known collectively by one person Dylan. This man had another, hidden side one which is now taunting them from beyond the grave. Why would Dylan want these secrets unearthed? Who is digging them up for him? And, more importantly, what is it going to take for them to be reburied?
"...even better [than The Legacy] a contemporary anatomy of grief, played out between four friends in the wake of a fatal accident, that tightens around the reader like a vice. Tranter makes most other psychological thrillers seem simple-minded" - Geordie Williamson, The Australian
"Readers could hardly imagine a more lucid, knowing investigation of what contemporary American existence looks like The excitement of concealment and exposure the bread and butter of genre thrills is not all that holds the reader, however. A Common Loss is built from richer, more complex stuff. It is a tale of social artifice that unfolds in a city of mirrors, and a story of betrayal that nonetheless unfolds using Tennysons bleakly authentic language of loss" - The Australian, December 2011
Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 - July 2, 1961) was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short story collections and two non-fiction works. Three novels, four collections of short stories and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of these are considered classics of American literature (Wikpedia) such as For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta), A Farewell To Arms, The Old Man And The Sea and A Moveable Feast.
Tonight, we'll be discovering the man, the books and the extraordinary life....
WINNER BLB SHORT STORY PRIZE
Congratulations to Leonie Howes, the winner of this years BLB Short Story Prize for her short story, 'One Long Road' ...
My eyes opened wide to the deafening silence, I survey my surroundings whilst recalling
the previous night. I remember being in a jeep with my Father and Brother, a vague
recollection of my Dad putting his forehead to mine, wishing me a safe journey then
nothing; I must have fallen asleep...
2ND PLACE : BLB SHORT STORY PRIZE
This years 2nd-Place winner is Maggie Arber for her short story, Invited.
3RD PLACE : BLB SHORT STORY PRIZE
And finally, our 3rd-Place prize winner this year goes to our 2010 Winner, Pat Simmons for Interview with the Cane Toad .
The BLB Short Story Prize began in 2010 as an opportunity for local writers to portray their literary and storytelling prowess. However, the 'localness' concept was shortlived as we began receiving entries from right across the state.
This year, the competition was expanded to include the BLB Schools Short Story Prize and we were really excited by the standard of entries received.
There are already plans afoot for The 2012 BLB Short Story Prize so stay tuned for details...
WINNER SCHOOLS SHORT STORY PRIZE
We're really excited to annouce that the winner of our inaugural BLB Schools Short Story Prize for 2011 is Alex MacRitchie for highly imaginitive short story, 'My Adventure In The Land Of Spirits' ...
I woke up, still lying in the kangaroo skin which I had hunted and killed with my spear. Looking around, I found that I was still in my damp, smelly cave in this damp, smelly land, in this damp, extremely smelly world. I spent a moment to relive the dream that I had been dreaming. I was in the middle of this country, with no weapon and nothing to defend myself with. Then I saw these things which looked like spirits....
