ABOUT US

What is GOYGB?

GOYGB (Greek Orthodox Youth of Great Britain) is a youth group within the Orthodox Church. We organise a number of events for the youth of our Church in the UK.

The summer camp is the main event we hold and is run with the blessing of His Eminence our Archbishop Gregorios. The camp has been running since 1992 and has grown from just a handful of participents to over 60. The camp offers the future of our faith a place to meet other Orthodox Christians from different backgrounds and to learn more about the Orthodox Christian Faith.

The camp is based in the beautiful countryside of Shropshire on our own field, bought by the Archdiocese in 2007. During the camp participants (9-17 year olds) take part in a variety of activities, games, discussions, lessons, workshops and prayer. From these organised activities we provide a place for young Orthodox Christians to feel confortable with their Faith and to learn what Christ taught us.

January 2012

- The Chairman and Logisitics officer will be meeting with H.E Archbishop Gregorios to discuss GOYGB's financial situation and the Keep Camp Appeal over the next couple of weeks.

- Please note that the dates of camp have changed 22nd July - 29th July . (Please don't stop spreading GOYGB News, Newlsetter and links, every bit counts.)

- Clean-up weekend: 21st - 22nd January 2012 . Please contact Miss Zoe Holden for details.

- Clean-up weekend was a great success though very few showed up and helped we enjoyed the work throughout the day. A BIG thankyou goes out to the Shrewsburry Parish who have helped invaluably in getting GOYGB Camp back on its feet.

November 2011

- GOYGB are planning to launch their first Newsletter in the new year (which can also be subscribed to) Watch This Space!

- Planning Permission was granted to us by the Shropshire Council on the 28/11/2011. Building will commence as soon as funds are raised.

- An appeal group has been set up to help direct the fundraising and donating for the camp. In total £50,000 needs to be raised by spring 2012 in order for the camp to go ahead. Thankyou for all your support so far.

- It is with great sadness that the GOYGB camp was attacked by arsonists early on Sunday 06/11/2011. Everything that belonged to the camp was destroyed in the blaze. Police and local authorities are investigating the crime and we will keep you updated.

October 2011

- Camp reunion 2011 was a great success. Held in the city of Bath, we visited the popular Amercian Museum which together with it's wonderful grounds proved a fantastic day out.

GOYGB Keep Camp Appeal

The "Keep Camp" appeal was launched in the winter of 2011, in reaction to an arson attack on the summer camp's equipment (which is kept onsite throughout the year). On the 6th November 2011 the GOYGB camp was attacked by arsonists, all that survived the burning wreckage was a few icons. Thankfully this attack happened whilst nobody was onsite and not during the camp. GOYGB was founded 20 years ago and everything that was so lovingly donated since then has been detroyed by the mindless acts of others.

Following the GOYGB AGM held a week after the attack it was concluded that despite this major set back the summer camp should still go ahead in 2012. This desicion was supported by His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios, who was notified of these terrible events shortly after the attack.

We call upon all Orthodox Christians, parishes, associations and groups, nationally and internationally; as the Archdiocese highlighted in a statement released on their website:

'This camp was attended by children from a great mixture of backgrounds and the races that are contained in the Archdiocese. These include Greeks, English, Romanians, Russians, Bulgarians, and Georgians' [ Archdiocese website ].

SUMMER CAMP

CAMP REUNION

CAROL SINGING

Since 1992 the GOYGB summer camp has brought together 9-17 year olds from all over Britain. They share 10 days of activities, discussions, games and prayer with trained leaders in the beautiful Shropshire countryside.

All leaders are CRB checked and are trained to work with the childrens needs in a safe Christian manner.

A number of guest speakers are invited to hold discussions and lessons with all the children, covering topical issues at the time or within the church. These include clergy, monastics and iconographers to name but a few.

The participants and leaders live in tents for the entire camp. They are divided by age into tents of 6 or 7 children and are assigned a team of leaders who will look after them for the duration of camp. The camp is split into three groups: Juniors (9-11 years) Intermediates (12-14 years) and Seniors (15-17 years).

Everybody comes together for worship and meals.

After every summer camp at least one reunion is organised later in the year by a smaller group of leaders.

The reunion offers the children and leaders at that years camp an informal get together with no organised lessons or workshops.

The reunion is held in different places each year in order to help share the load. An individual opens up their home and parish to welcome the GOYGB youth in for a weekend. An activity is usually organised on the Saturday afternoon and everyone attends the Sunday liturgy at the local church.

This is often held in the month of October but please keep checking the website for further notice.

GOYGB holds a number of events throughout the year. One that has proved most enjoyable and can only be made better with your help is the anual Christmas Carol Singing.

This is primarly organised in London (dates of which will be published nearer the time) but we wish to encourage as many people to get involved as possible. If you are unable to join us in London then why not organise your own in your local parish community?

All the money we raise through this fun event goes towards the summer camp.

Who is Camp for?

Camp is open to participants aged between 9 and 17 years.

We are always looking for leaders and assistants aged 18+. For further info please contact Camp Director - Zoe Holden .

Where is Camp?

Camp is held on our own site in Much Wenlock, Shropshire. This land was purchased for us by His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios in 2007. (please see contact page for address)

When is Camp?

Camp 2012 will be held on 22nd July - 29th July.

What languages are spoken on camp?

English is the main language spoken on camp and both leaders and participants are required to confidently communicate and understand it in order to attend.

Do I have to stay for the whole of camp?

We recommend staying for the entire of camp to get the most out of your experience and to enable you to form strong friendships. However, we are flexible if you are not able to come for the entire time.

How much does it cost?

There is a fee of £195 per participant for this years camp. Limited help is available for those unable to pay the full amount. There are also options for those who wish to spread the cost throughout the year. Please contact us for more details.

There is no set charge for leaders. However, where possible, we ask leaders to make a donation of £50 to help cover food costs.

How do I get involved?

If you wish to find out more about camp or want to know what exactly to do next please contact the Camp Director - Zoe Holden.

If you wish to be a leader at camp then we need to perform a CRB check. You are also required to attend a leader training weekend before camp. The more help the better as there is plenty to do before, during and after camp.

If you want to help in the setting up and taking down of camp then please contact either Camp Director - Zoe Holden or Logistics Coordinator - Paul Holden. No CRB check is required and no leader training needs to be attended. The more support in these areas the better, as there are small and large jobs that need to be done. It's also a way of making new friendships and would give you a slight insight into how camp is set out.

Is there transport to camp?

Yes- a coach is available to camp and back from London (details of which will be on the application forms) . If a large number of people are wanting to travel from the same place then transportation help can be arranged. This does depend on how quick your reply is so we have a better idea of numbers.

Can I visit the camp to get a taster?

Yes of course you can but we prefer you to visit on the open day set aside in the camp timetable for just that. Family, friends and locals are invited on a particular day at camp to visit and join in on some activities. BUILDING PLAN

GOYGB has many long-term plans to develop the site on which the camp is held. These include erecting a permanant building.

This idea is fast becoming a reality thanks to the support of the local community and council as well as the backing from His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios. But the main support and funding is coming from you. To reach our target total of £75,000 donations and fundraising events have been organised in aid of this wonderful plan.

We would like to encourage any parents/carers, parishes or associations to help raise this amount of money. Holding a fundraising event in your church, having a bring 'n' buy sale or doing a sponsored walk are all fun ways of raising money and bring a community together. If you are able to donate money to this worthy cause and help erect our first building it would be much apreciated. Every Little Helps.

The proposed building would be situated at the top of the field to the left of St Milbugers tree (if you're looking down field). It would have two floors, with the ground floor holding a number of much needed utilities such as: showers, toilets, sinks and a storage area. The upper floor would be used as a larger storage area holding all the equipment used for camp throughout the year and could be some much needed over flow space for when the camp is running.

We ask for your support in this and help us to raise the target amount needed to erect such a building. This would benefit GOYGB massivley and all who attend the camp for years to come.

Official Information

The Way GOYGB Operates

The camp operates with the Blessing of His Eminance Archbishop Gregorios. Every year a committee is elected and in turn co-ordinators are elected to organise and direct the camp. Each co-ordinator is responsible for a particular section of the camp and a group of leaders, and is directly answerable to the camp director and His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios.

Leaders are responsible for a group of children or certain activities and have annual training sessions to facilitate this.

All members of GOYGB are Orthodox Christians. Everyone on camp is supported by the camp clergy.

Child Protection Information

GOYGB understands that the protection, happiness and wellbeing of children is paramount. We prepare our leaders to look after your children affectively and safely with annual child protection sessions. All leaders must recieve a criminal records bureau (CRB) check and are expected to abide by the camp rules and code of conduct.

The GOYGB Child Protection Policy is regularly updated and is based on national government guidelines and church child protection guidance.

GOYGB is a member of the Churches Child Protection Advisory Service (CCPAS), from which we receive advice and guidance, w e have our own Child Protection Policy (Code of Conduct & Additional info) .

During camp there are individuals with specialist child protection training to guide leaders if a safeguarding issue arises.

These include James Marcelo (Coordinator), who trained in social work, and Zoe Holden (Camp Director), who works in healthcare. We are also in contact with child protection officers offsite, such as Presbytera Catherine Maxfield, to ensure there is always someone available to put your childs wellbeing first.

Safety During Camp

The safety of your children is as important to us as it is to you. Our Logistics Officer (Paul Holden) and Health and Safety Officer (Ambrose Nankivell) work with the rest of the team to ensure appropriate risk assessments are performed before and during camp and that equipment is well maintained.

During camp we have a number of leaders with First Aid certificates and also have a nominated nurse onsite to provide for your childs health needs.

To help us ensure your childs safety at camp, please send your child with the appropriate clothing and footwear indicated on the what to bringlist.
