Inline hockey, also called Skater hockey, often incorrectly reffered to as Roller hockey (a sport played on more traditional 'quad' roller skates, closer resembling field hockey on wheels) started out as a variant of street hockey in the late 70's.
Inline hockey is played on a rink, sometimes purpose built, but more often than not in sports halls, or tarmac courts. A team consists of 4 outfield players and one goaltender, all wearing inline skates. The players wear a lot of padding, as although inline hockey is not full checking, there is still a fair amount of physical contact.
The object of the game is to put the puck, or ball into the net of the opposing team , while stopping them from scoring in your own.
Inline hockey is a very fast paced and high scoring game, with scores of around 7 goals to 8 being very common place.
As the game is so fast paced rolling substitutions are common place.
You would be forgiven for likening the sport to ice hockey, but the tactics employed differ, due to the lack of offside rule (or at least simplified offside for GBHI League)
There are 3 main national leagues in the UK.
BIPHA - Puck hockey, no offsides, some regions with 3, or more divisions.
BiSHA - Ball league, no offsides, less strict checking rules
GBHI - Puck hockey, offside rule
Plus a numberr of minor leagues
NSHL - Similar rules to BIPHA
BRHA - Similar rules to GBHI
SWIRL - Similar rules to BIPHA
