The Fall football season is off to an excellent start, with the Grizzlies whomping River City and Duval Charter's three teams in the first week of games.Our players are the best, and their practice is really paying off! September 20, 2011 - Global Outreach Charter Academy Opening in Palm CoastParents in the Palm Coast community have been looking for a Russian language program for their children for a long time. Global Outreach's first Teacher of the Year last year--Mrs. Katrina Frunker--was raised in Palm Coast, and remembers a time when she was frustrated with the difficulty of learning English as a thirteen-year-old immigrant from Ukraine. Finally, on September 20th, parents in Palm Coast received the long-awaited answer to their call. With the help of staff members at Global Outreach Charter Academy in Jacksonville, parents in Palm Coast submitted a charter application and received unanimous approval by the school board of Flagler County. Test results from the school in Jacksonville, a promising bilingual program, and glowing recommendations from Susan Biehler, the current charter liaison in Duval County--all contributed to the new charter school's approval. Click here to read the full story.________________________________________________________________________________________________________August 22, 2011 - GOCA Expands its Language Program to Include Chinese and SpanishAs a school that is focused on expanding student critical language literacy to the highest degree possible, Global Charter Outreach Academy will be expanding its foreign language offerings to include Mandarin Chinese and Spanish as optional after-school programs.At GOCA, all core courses will be taught in English. Most students will also receive daily instruction in Russian, including culture, literacy and speaking skills without any prior knowledge of the language. Mandarin Chinese and Spanish (as well as French and German) will be available as optional after school programs for all interested students.________________________________________________________________________________________________________July 1, 2011 - GOCA is now a "B" School!The FCAT results are in, and it's official -- GOCA has improved its school grade to a B in only its second year. GOCA has made massive gains in Writing and Math, and is well on its way to becoming an "A" school."There is definitely room for improvement," says Sergey Soroka, the school's founder. "Now that the scores are in, we know more specifically which subject areas need the most attention. Our goal is to become an A school this year."

Russian Language Program

Global Outreach Charter Academy offers a unique opportunity for students to learn the Russian language, even while they study all their core subjects in English.Through once-a-week Russian classes in the elementary grades and daily classes in middle school, GOCA's bilingual teachers help students become functionally proficient in speaking, reading, and writing Russian. Care is taken to ease students into the new language and ensure comprehension. Students who do not have room for Russian during their school day may take the language after school in one of GOCA's many language clubs.GOCA also helps Slavic students and their parents adjust to the American school system and accelerate their integration into American society. To that end, we provide parents with monthly bilingual newsletters and after-school tutoring in English.

Critical Language EducationAt Global Outreach Charter Academy, all teachers are certified professionals and teach all core classes and electives in English. GOCA's distinguishing feature is that Russian is taught to all students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Students also have the opportunity to study additional languages, like Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, French and German, after school. Why study foreign languages (like Russian or Chinese)?Russian and Mandarin Chinese are two of the most widely-spoken languages in the world, with a total of 25% of the world's population speaking either Russian or Chinese fluently.In our current age of increasing globalization, the advanced economies of Europe and East Asia have become effectively bilingual, using English alongside native languages on a daily basis. In the United States, however, foreign language education has experienced a steep decline within recent years. GOCA's mission is to help reverse that decline, and to produce literate, multilingual and multicultural citizens for a more globalized future.The world of the twenty-first century--the world of immediately subsequent generations--will not be an English-only world, but an advanced, multilingual, global society. PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Greetings!As the principal of Global Outreach Charter Academy, it is my responsibility to ensure that we stay true to our mission to deliver a first-class academic program that offers a unique bilingual and bi-cultural curriculum, while preparing students to have an edge in global competition. My seventeen years in education--sixteen years with Duval County Public Schools--have afforded me the opportunity to be an educational advocate for all stakeholders involved in the development of student academic achievement. This position includes guiding teachers to implement best practices to engage students in active learning and a rigorous curriculum via differentiated instruction, Common Core and Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. Foundations and CHAMPS are provided to maintain a safe and civil school. GOCA has created a positive school and family environment. By collectively and collaboratively working together, we increased student achievement, which resulted in our school grade improving from a C to a B. Students will obtain a sound educational foundation at GOCA, which will allow them to matriculate on to high school and college with the necessary skills to be successful and productive citizens. Benefits of Learning Spanish

With well over 35 million Spanish speakers in the United States, and with over 40% of the population growth being among the Hispanic people, the stage is set for an enormous increase in Spanish usage in the United States. This has sparked a lot of interest among US citizens, a group not particularly known for their multilingualism. This interest will only increase as the Hispanic population of the US approaches 50 million by the year 2015. But it's not only in the US where Spanish is popular. In Europe, Spanish is the second most popular second language, after English. With some 400 million speakers, Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. Only Mandarin, English and Hindi have more speakers. If you count only native speakers, Spanish outranks English. Spanish is an official language on four continents and is the mother tongue in 21 countries. The sheer number of Spanish speakers and their rate of growth makes learning Spanish a smart choice.
