Information
To apply for any workshops, send me a brief message using my "contact" page about yourself and your interest in poetry -- please include a recent poem or two that's representative of your work. Whether you've been writing for years or have finally decided to move out of your private notebooks and into a more formal setting, youll find that my workshops can help you accomplish your literary goals. Many past workshop participants confess that they almost didn't apply for fear that the workshop would be out of their league, but everyone is glad they did. My workshops regularly have many returnees, and their writing continues to improve.

Workshops
My previous creative writing workshops usually cost $250 or more.... Because of the U.S. economic issues, this year's workshops have been deeply discounted. If this reduced price is still too much to bear, consider taking one of the free community writing workshops offered through C&R Press, my non-profit press.

Regular Workshops
Traditional (face-to-face) workshops are limited to 8 students. The focus of our sessions is on your work, with an eye to helping each piece of writing become more fully realized. This, of course, involves identifying strengths and weaknesses, offering revision suggestions, and working with (and against) conscious and unconscious elements that inspired the work. In addition to examining poems brought to the session, we will look at craft essays, articles, and other texts that might inform our discussion.
Online Workshops
Each online workshop is limited to 10 poets. Every participant will post a single poem each week as well as respond to the posted poem by 3-4 other writers each week. I'll offer weekly writing suggestions (not assignments, but suggestions that have proven useful to previous students) and lead online "discussions" on our blog page of recommended readings, writing, publishing, editing, and whatever other topics interest the group.
Is it for me?
Though I occasionally teach classes for absolute beginners, most of my writing workshops are for those with some familiarity with the tradition of literature and some ability with the written word. If you want to improve your writing background on your own (or prior to taking my workshops), consider courses at USF-Manatee County, the University of Tampa, local libraries, or writing groups. I also recommend reading books on the craft of poetry such as The Poet's Companion: A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry (ed. Addonizio and Laux), Nine Gates (Hirshfield), Contemporary American Poetry: Behind the Scenes (ed. Van Cleave), and The Art and Craft of Poetry (Bugeja).

Private Consultation
Some people prefer or require one-on-one coaching with their writing. I understand and appreciate that. If this describes you, please contact me (use the contact tab below), and let me know your interests, goals, and concerns.I believe that active participation in the literary arts helps grow the mind, cultivate creativity, and sustain the soul. If I can help make the arts a more important part of your life, I choose to do so.

All of my writing workshops are for writers who are comfortable with honest, constructive feedback and are committed to improving their own work. The goal of every writing workshop is the creative enterprise--you will delve into your imagination and learn critical tools that can help you shape what your mind has startled into life. Some of my students have published work in literary journals, anthologies, and their own books. Some have gone on to attend creative writing programs (McNeese State, Clemson University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Sarah Lawrence College, and others). Some have been accepted to summer writing programs (Iowa Summer Writing Festival, Taos Summer Writing Workshop, and others). I have worked with students in their teens to students in their eighties--the only prerequisite is some skill in writing and a strong interest in improving their ability.
