Meet the Doctor - Sameer I. Ahmad, M.D.

Glaucoma is a slowly progressive disease of the optic nerve (“the silent thief”) and if left untreated, can lead to blindness. Glaucoma Consultants of Washington has risen to become the premier glaucoma practice in the Washington DC Metro area. We are the only practice in the Northern Virginia region dedicated solely to the medical and surgical management of the various forms of primary and secondary glaucoma. We take great pride in providing compassionate and ethical medical care and will formulate an individualized treatment strategy that can often times be implemented by your primary eye care provider (Ophthalmologist or Optometrist) locally. In the event, surgical or laser treatment is needed, Dr. Ahmad is skilled in most glaucoma laser surgery techniques and incisional surgery including trabeculectomy (glaucoma filtering surgery), glaucoma tube implants, the revision of glaucoma filtering procedures, and combined cataract and glaucoma surgery. Once stable after surgery, your care can continue with your primary eye care provider. Dr. Ahmad has special interests in advanced surgical techniques for previously operated eyes, patients with corneal disease or history of refractory surgery, and neovascular glaucomas. His research interests are in developing novel glaucoma implants as well as utilizing medical informatics tools to improve patient education and health care delivery.

What to expect on your first visit.

Glaucoma Consultants of Washington.
A typical first appointment will last 3 to 3.5 hours total and consists of the components outlined below. This ensures a thorough examination and complete understanding of your condition.Medical history examination taken by GCW technicians. Glaucoma testing as necessary, including visual field and retinal topography. Slit Lamp and gonioscopy Examination (SLE) and Intraocular Pressure (IOP) reading.Dilation (may take about an hour to be fully dilated).After dilation, the doctor will complete the glaucoma evaluation by doing a fundus and IOP check. For your first appointment, we request that you:complete our new patient packet, available for download here. Bring it with you on your appointment day or fax it to us at (703) 485 1153.ask your referring doctor to fax old examination notes and visual field tests results to us.bring a list of all medications you are currently taking, including multivitamins and supplements.bring all ocular medications with you.

Sameer I. Ahmad, M.D.

He has special interests in advanced surgical techniques for previously operated eyes, patients with corneal transplants, and neovascular glaucomas. His research interests are in developing novel glaucoma implants as well as utilizing medical informatics tools to improve patient education and health care delivery. Dr. Ahmad received his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine where he was inducted into the prestigious AOA national medical honor society. He then served as a General Medical Officer in the United States Air Force for 4 years. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Duke University where he was also selected as Chief Resident and later completed his Glaucoma fellowship.

Sameer Ahmad is a Glaucoma surgeon and specialist who was on the full-time faculty as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 2004 to 2007. A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Ahmad specializes in the evaluation and management of patients with routine and complicated glaucoma. He is skilled in most glaucoma laser surgery techniques and his experience with incisional surgery includes glaucoma filtering surgery, glaucoma tube implants, the revision of glaucoma filtering procedures, and combined cataract and glaucoma surgery.

What is Glaucoma?

How is it treated?

Glaucoma can be treated medically and/or surgically. Eye drops are commonly given as a first line of treatment to relieve eye pressure. Oral medications may help but are used sparingly due to the potential for side effects.Laser procedures may also be a suitable option for select patients. Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve that leads to vision loss. Damage to the optic nerve is usually but not always caused by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Also known as the "silent thief," glaucoma often leads to vision loss that is so gradual that it goes unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage.

Surgery Information.

Surgery for glaucoma is usually needed when medications are no longer effective in controlling the pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure). The surgery is an outpatient procedure and will be performed at one of the surgery centers listed in the right hand column of this page. It is important that you have a presurgical physical with either your primary care physician or cardiologist to ensure that you are medically cleared for surgery. You may be required to

have an EKG and blood work based on your age and past medical history. It is important that these results be complete and forwarded to our office at least 3 days prior to your scheduled surgery date. In addition, we would like for you to stop all bood thinners at least 10 days prior to the surgery date. This includes (but not limited to) Coumadin, Warfarin, Plavix, Aspirin and NSAID's (ibuprofen, naproxen etc.). Your primary doctor is aware of this requirement and will review your medical history to make sure that it is safe to withold these medications in anticipation of your surgery. Please review specific requirements for each surgery center in the handouts that you received during your appointment. Call the office during regular business hours if you have any further questions.

General FAQQ: What services does GCW provide?We devote all of our resources to glaucoma care only to ensure thorough examination and treatment. We provide comprehensive glaucoma evaluation, visual field testing, retinal topography testing, glaucoma laser treatment (ALT, SLT, and iridotomy), and various surgical options. For more information, see our About Us page.We do NOT do Lasik or lens prescriptions. Please see your local optometrist for refraction services.Q: My eye pressure is normal. Does this mean I don't have glaucoma?No, not necessarily. Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve and is not solely diagnosed by measuring eye pressure. In fact, many people have normal eye pressure and still have glaucoma due to their optic nerve appearance.Q: What are the risk factors for glaucoma?Glaucoma is considered a "silent thief" and can impair vision with no obvious symptoms. However, some factors place you in an increased risk category, including:High eye pressure (intraocular pressure, or IOP)Family History of GlaucomaEthnic Background. African-Americans are significantly more likely to have glaucoma and exhibit permanent blindness as a result.
