The After-School All-Stars has six different, yet related, components, each led by a certified teacher selected by the Middle School principals:
Academic Remediation and Enrichment (tutorial, homework, research, Media Center, math & science)
Sports & Recreation (golf, tennis, gymnastics, chess, outdoor education, wellness and nutrition)
Career Development (career prep success, Junior Achievement, mentoring, job shadowing, student
leadership, oratory skills)
Technology (web design)
Cultural Erichment (art, dance, music)
Parental Involvement
Academic remediation and enrichment is more than homework assistance and tutoring. While it does provide a time for the students to receive help with homework assignments, the after-school program enriches that experience through individual and one-on-one instruction by a certified teacher. Sports and recreation includes both traditional and non-traditional exposures to individual and team play. Carrying on the tradition of the Inner-City Games, good sportsmanship is always a top priority. Young people (even in the middle schools) need to be exposd to a number of career choices. Students in the after school program have in-job shadowing, mentoring, improved oratory skills, and other career development programs
In this electronic age, children in the after school program are given instruction in a wide variety of technologie, ranging from electronics to web design. A unique program developed for the After-School All-Stars is MIRACLES. In cooperation with Dallas Austin Recording Projects, a fully equipped and operational professional recording studio is available for students to not only perform in, but to learn the unique engineering skills of professional recording studios.
The After-School All-Stars (aka Inner-City Games) began as a summer athletic program for inner city kids in 1994. Capitalizing on the approaching 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, various tournament play was conducted all over the city of Atlanta. Organizers used these events to teach kids about fair play, sportsmanship, and the negative consequences of bad behavior, gangs, and drugs.
In 1999 the emphasis shifted to a program that had a longer and more sustaining message of "hope, learning, and life." The After-School All-Stars was born. The After-School All-Stars began by developing significant enhancements to existing after-school programs in elementary schools. Realizing some great initial success by 2002, a decision was made to develop (with the help of principals, teachers, parents, students and community leaders) a comprehensive and sustainable after-school program that included all of the positive messages of the Inner-City Games.
A second decision was made - to offer these programs in inner city middle schools (as opposed to elementary schools or high schools that were already gaining attention by other community groups). A third decision was made, in part, because the targeted middle schools were attended by students in the poorest inner city neighborhoods (as reflected by the 95% "free or reduced lunch" status reported by the Atlanta Public Schools) and simply could not afford a first-rate after school program. Today, more than 2,000 inner city middle school children participate in the program every day after school during the school year and during our summer camps.

Programming falls into five highly structured and organized categories, each led by a State Certified Teacher: Academic Remediation and Enrichment, Cultural Enrichment, Technology, Sports and Recreation, and Parental Involvement. For the Education Achievement Student Success strategy, we will focus on improving standardized test scores, increasing students grade point average and attendance at school.
After-school is not an extension of the school day. It is a place that combines fun and learning. Quality comprehensive after-school programs emphasize activity-based learning that reinforces the knowledge and skills needed for in-school success. They also promote positive relationships among children and adults, create an engaging environment for children to interact with each other, and provide opportunities for children to make decisions and to learn leadership skills. After-School All-Stars Atlanta programs nurture the body, mind and spirit of every child who participates. Our program content is designed to meet specific local needs and interests; however, each of our sites is committed to providing a comprehensive after-school experience that includes three components: Independent Learning, Academics, and Enrichment. In addition, each child receives a nutritious snack before engaging in selected activities. After-School All-Stars is a member of a nation-wide network of 15 cities allowing for a free exchange of ideas, experiences, and successful strategies.

Jarel Small hails from Wichita, KS by way of Baton Rouge, LA where he received his undergraduate degree, a B.S. in Criminal Justice, from Southern University and A & M College. After graduating, Jarel realized that he had a genuine passion for working with children, particularly middle school kids. However, during his previous tenure with Hands On Atlanta Americorps, working as a math tutor for students who needed extra resources in math, Jarel figured that working toward prevention of juvenile criminals, rather than their correction, would be a greater benefit to the youth.
