Porto- 3 Weeks!
The squad are only weeks away from their first international competition to Porto on the 17th and 18th April. With 13 members travelling to the continent this promises to be a great trip and hopefully they can come away with some silverware!
The GKI squad was formed to encourage more competition among GKI members. Especially those young kaateka who lose motivtion and interest after achieving black belt status. The squad trials are open to any member of the GKI in Greak Britain and, if selected, karateka will travel to international competitions representing Great Britain on behalf of th GKI.
The GKI is a non-profit making organisation that is dedicated to the promotion and teaching of classical and traditional Goju Ryu Karate Do based on the ideas of Chojun Miyagi, the founder of Goju Ryu. GKI conducts regular lectures, seminars and special courses for all students as well as a continuous training programme for instructors. Instructors have to conform to the highest standards, as set out by the organisation and are assessed on an ongoing basis.
Grading examinations are held at regular intervals for both students and instructors to ensure the development of the association as a whole. Members are encouraged to compete at National and International competitions and events.
The GKI is a member of SportsmanshipFirst, an
organisation aimed at promoting sportsmanship.
This means that whilst competition is actively
encouraged, it is not at the detriment of positive
moral behaviour.
Best of luck to the squad at the 1st Goju Ryu World Championships in Lisbon!
29th September - 3rd october
The squad is comprised of any GKI member who trials and successfully secures a place on the team. Trials are open to all and held each month. The team is proud to be part of SportsmanshipFirst, an initiative which encourages good moral behaviour through sport. As a squad we value the contribution we can make to society and we reflect this in the way we conduct ourselves at training and competitions.
The squad has members competing in kumite and kata in traditional competitions. throughout the UK and abroad. The GKI GB squad is not simply about competing to win, an important aspect which is encouraged through squad training is that personal improvement is key to lifelong karate training and whilst competition is actively encouraged it does not undermine the traditional teaching of the GKI.
