Hey everyone; welcome to the Gamma Beta chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha! Here at Gamma Beta we are so excited to welcome everyone to Washington College. We cannot wait to share all the incredible aspects of ZTA with incoming students. ZTA does not only offer an opportunity for academic achievement and campus involvement, but also an amazing love through our sisterhood and philanthropy. Staying true to our creed that states, “Love the greatest of all things,” sisterhood and friendship is so important to our chapter. Check out our website and pictures and see how our girls shine through ZTA.
Zeta Love,
Gamma Beta Sisters
Our National History
Zeta Tau Alpha was originally founded on October 15, 1898, by nine young women at the State Female Normal School in Farmville, Virginia. Only 14-15 years of age, these young women desired permanence to their friendships and hoped to perpetuate their sisterhood long after college. Though dedicated to the formation of a Greek-letter group, the band of nine delayed selecting a formal name. A temporary name of "???" was taken when, as legend has it, a member of another group met with the Founders. Raising her eyebrows and forming her fingers in the shape of a question mark, she asked, "Who are you?" In unison, the group answered "Yes, Who? Who? Who?" Thus, the group came to be known as "???" while they sought an appropriate Greek name and symbols. During this time, the group received valuable assistance from two of the members brothers - Mauds brother, Plummer Jones, and Frances Yancey Smith's brother, Giles Mebane Smith. Both were students at the College of William and Mary, members of mens Greek-letter organizations and knowledgeable of Greek lore. After a year of careful contemplation, the group chose the formal name, the patron goddess and the badge.

Our Creed
To realize that within our grasp, in Zeta Tau Alpha, lies the opportunity to learn those things which will ever enrich and ennoble our lives; to be true to ourselves, to those within and without our circle; to think in terms of all mankind and our service in the world; to be steadfast, strong, and clean of heart and mind, remembering that since the thought is father to the deed, only that which we would have manifested in our experience should be entertained in thought; to find satisfaction in being, rather than seeming, thus strengthening in us the higher qualities of the spirit; to prepare for service and learn the nobility of serving, thereby earning the right to be served; to seek understanding that we might gain true wisdom; to look for the good in everyone; to see beauty, with its enriching influence; to be humble in success, and without bitterness in defeat; to have the welfare and harmony of the Fraternity at heart, striving ever to make our lives a symphony of high ideals, devotion to the Right, the Good, and the True, without a discordant note; remembering always that the foundation precept of Zeta Tau Alpha was Love, the greatest of all things.
-- Written by Shirley Kreasan Strout, adopted by the 1928 ZTA Convention
Our Purpose
The purpose of Zeta Tau Alpha is the intensifying of friendship, the fostering of a spirit of love, the creating of such sentiments, the performing of such deeds, and the moulding of such opinions as will be conducive to the building up of a purer and nobler womanhood in the world.

Philanthropy and Service are integral aspects of our Gamma Beta chapter at Washington College. We strive to support and promote Breast Cancer Awareness and Education as well as extend our involvement to the community.
Philantrophy
In 1992, ZTA adopted The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as its national philanthropy. Later, the Fraternity broadened its focus to encompass not only the Komen Foundation, but also other educational means dedicated to fighting breast cancer through education, awareness and promoting breast health.
Throughout the month, ZTAs will partner with the National Football League to distribute pink awareness ribbons at 22 stadiums, with Yoplait® Yogurt to Save Lids to Save Lives®, and with Susan G. Komen to sponsor the Survivor Program at Races for the Cure®.
In addition to participating in off campus fundraisers, our chapter hosts an annual medley of on campus festivities, includimg the Yoplait Yogurt Day and Yogurt Eating Contest! The goal of the contest is to collect as many lids as possible to donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We also "Pink Out" the campus, handout ribbons and sell raffle tickets to themed baskets.
In the spring,we have the "Big Man on Campus" contest. Our chapter raises money to promote Breast Cancer research by selling tickets to the event, an in-house raffle, and a "Best Legs" contest. Male contestants participate in a Toga Contest, woo the judges with their Q&A Session, and show off during the talent portion of the program. Fun is had by all!
Service
Every semester, our chapter also takes part in Adopt-a-Highway. The sisters usually enjoy going out to lunch after a few hours of cleaning up our part of the road in Chestertown.
Sisters participate in the Relay For Life program to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Sisters also do service not associated with ZTA. We have sisters who take part in service groups such as Hands Out or Best Buddies, as well as sisters who have attended and plan to attend more of WC's Alternative Spring Break Habitat for Humanity project.
We are also involved in volunteering at local schools and care faciliteis, tutoring children and offer babysitting services.
Futhermore, we volunteer at the humane society once or twice a month.
