Class Requirements
Physical Education is very important. Therefore, attendance and active participation is mandatory. Students may be excused from participation due to illness or injury only upon receipt of a note from a nurse, doctor, or parent provided to the teacher at the beginning of class.
Students need to change from school clothing into PE clothing. The required attire is a Montbello PE T-shirt, black shorts or leggings, gym shoes and socks for Team Sports and Fitness & Conditioning. T-shirts and/or muscle shirts may not be worn over or under PE attire. Students may not wear jewelry, and must not have gum or candy. Students not in required attire will be expected to complete a written assignment given by the teacher and turned in at the end of class.
Students will need to bring one spiral notebook, a pen or pencil, and their agenda/planner to class everyday.
Make up work
Students must make up ALL absences, non-dress, non-participation and tardy deductions by running every Thursday after school. Students must be dressed in appropriate PE attire for the make up run, and report to the PE teacher in the gym by 3:05 PM. For each of the above violations, students will run 4 laps around the track or 20 laps around the gym.
Clarification of terms
Non-dress - The failure to wear appropriate attire or failure to completely change out of school clothes into PE attire.
Non-participation - Refusal to participate when asked by the teacher; failure to participate appropriately during any portion of the class; failure to turn in written assignments; not following directions; horseplay of any type; trash talk; disrespecting the teacher or other students.
Truancy - Failure to remain in class the entire time and/or leaving class without permission.

Course Objectives
Advisory is a course established to help you succeed in your pursuit of academic excellence.
Because success in school hinges on reading, you will read, along with me, approximately 25
minutes per day. You will keep a reading log to reflect on your reading and you will fill out an SSR
Tracking Log for each class. You will need to bring your own reading materials. I will have
some books in my classroom library that you may borrow after you finish your first book.
The advisory curriculum for this year is Critical and Creative Thinking for Teenagers by Carol
Carter and Maureen Breeze. You will each receive a book. This book will give you career skills,
learning and innovation skills, and information, media and technology skills. You will explore
themes such as risk taking, problem solving, coping with mistakes, team collaboration, and
media literacy. Through discussions and peer and teacher collaboration, you will learn valuable
life lessons to take into your future. You will spend approximately 35 minutes per day on this
activity, covering 2 chapters within a 9 week period. I will fill out an Advisory Curriculum
Tracking Log for each of you. We will do at least one Putting Your Heads Together activity
during each 9 week grading period.
The last 40 minutes of class is the Student Success Workshop. I will meet with you individually
to see how you are doing in all your classes and to help you succeed if you are having trouble in
a class. While I am meeting with individuals, the rest of you will work on SSR (a good time to
read more or to complete your reading log), do homework, or complete parts of your advisory
curriculum you were not able to finish. No other activities will be acceptable sleeping,
disrupting, etc.
I will call your parents to keep them informed on how you are doing. Hopefully, these will be
positive calls.
The attached Advisory Block Rubric gives you the criteria for grades, which I will calculate on a
100 point basis: 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, below 70=F. You will receive 5 credits
in this course.
See attendance and tardy policies in the Student Handbook.
