The Furman University American Chemical Society strives to build community among students and faculty, and to enhance the educational experience of students interested in chemistry at Furman University. We sponsor social activities, science outreach programs, and academic and professional development opportunities. We believe in creating a supportive environment where all students can have fun, excel academically, and grow professionally.

The Department of Chemistry ranks among the top 10 undergraduate colleges in the country in producing PhD candidates in chemistry, and among the top 25 of all universities in graduates certified by the American Chemical Society, averaging 30 per year. Its students are consistently among the national leaders in publishing and presenting the results of their research, and its innovative curriculum has been cited by the ACS as a model for other schools.

Members of the Furman ACS chapter volunteer through many community outreach programs, including the Howard Hughes Mentoring program, and Western Carolina ACS sponsored programs in local schools. We also provide a free chemistry tutoring program on campus called Catalyst. We usually try to host several social events for the department throughout the year.

An independent research project and senior thesis are required for all chemistry majors at Furman seeking to fulfill the degree requirements. It is an integral part of our curriculum and our department strongly emphasizes the importance of undergraduate research. Many students choose to research during one of their summers at Furman.
