The Hattie Catharn Farmer's Market was founded in 2009 by Yonnette Fleming. The multigenerational neighbors of Bed-Stuy get involved with community by learner to bake high fiber, whole grain breads on Saturdays. The Market and Garden employ, educate and empower local community teens through the Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. The Market also created an alternative food distribution program for neighborhood residents and a reduced price Fresh Food on Wheels program for seniors.
The market is a place where conversations about food, farm, and environmental issues happen and here, culturally appropriate foods are considered vital to community nutrition.
Having distributed 15,000 pounds of produce to date, the Garden has been a source for nourishment, inspiration, and meaningful conversations about the well being of the urban and farm community.
