1086 4 acres of woodland were recorded in the Domesday survey where Lupton now stands
1480 The Upton family settled on the estate which became known in time as L'Uptons (as expressed in Normal
French)
1765 Original house bought by Charles Hayne and modified in Palladian style the house stood at a crossroads
1788 Lupton House bought by Sir Francis Buller, who became a Baronet in 1799 - public roads in front of the house
were closed, extensive landscaping completed, and the current driveway was established
1800 Sir Francis died and the estate passed to Sir Francis Yarde-Buller
1804 Lupton House and the estate were let for 7 years
1820 Sir Francis died and the estate passed to Sir John Yarde-Buller (became 1st Baron Churston of Churston
Ferrers and Lupton in 1858)
1840 House extensively remodelled in neo-classical style by architect George Wightwick
(www. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Wightwick) the main entrance was moved to the west side of the house
and a porte-cochère added, the formal garden and terraces were established, and gatehouses placed at the
entrance to the driveway
1862 Further alterations were made by Anthony Salvin
1871 Sir John Yarde-Buller (Lord Churston) died
1910 John Reginald Lopes Yarde-Buller (Scots Guards, serving in Boer War and India) became Lord Churston, 3rd
Baron of Churston
1926 Serious fire destroyed the upper storey and the interior panelling and decorated plasterwork the house was
rebuilt without the top floor
1928 Second fire destroyed family heirlooms stored in stables
1936 Hon. Joan Guinness (née Yarde-Buller), daughter of the 3rd Baron Churston, married Prince Ali Khan, younger
son of The Aga Khan III
? The Churston family moved away from Lupton House
1944 Lupton House used for training exercises linked with allied invasion of Europe
? The house became a hotel, then Fenton School and Lupton House School
1983 The entrance Lodges were doubled in depth by architect Keith Proctor
1990 Gramercy Hall School established
2002 Archaeological excavations led by Dr Philip Armitage, continued in 2003
2004 Gramercy Hall School closed
2005 Most Haunted Live television programme filmed at Lupton House
