Our VIP's will continue the evening at the Gala and be treated to reserved VIP seating, dinner and complimentary drinks.GUEST SPEAKERElaine Marshall, North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall was born in rural Lineboro, Maryland in 1945. Her father was a farmer who served as a volunteer fire fighter and community leader, while her mother was the organist in the family's small rural church for more than 60 years. Elaine earned her law degree from Campbell University in 1981 and distinguished herself as a tough advocate for her clients in the courtroom, where she represented women who were victims of domestic violence. In 1993-1994, Elaine served in the North Carolina Senate, where she was named Rookie of the Year and listed among Legislators to Watch by the News & Observer. In the Senate, she provided a powerful voice for improving healthcare in our state. An Advocate for AllAs a member of the Senate, she fought for much needed healthcare services, especially for our states rural areas. And as Secretary of State, Elaine made protecting consumers and creating jobs a top priority. She has five step-children and seven grandchildren. Wells, MASarah is the Executive Director for The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, located in Washington, DC. The Consumer Voice is the parent organization of FORLTC. In her role, she directs the operations of the organization, leads fundraising and strategic planning efforts, liaises with the governing board and represents the Consumer Voice in advocacy efforts for long-term care consumers.Chris ChapmanChris' life was forever changed on May 23, 2010, when at his fiancées bachelorette party, an innocent act of horseplay turned tragic. His bride-to-be, Rachelle Friedman, was pushed in a pool severing her spinal cord and leaving her a quadriplegic. The couple made international news when their love & commitment became a symbol of hope, courage & strength. Chris is a 7th grade history teacher and as a caregiver for his new bride, he is working to gain equal rights for individuals living with disabilities.

ANNUAL AWARD PROGRAM

Each year, Friends of Residents in Long Term Care spear heads several awards to highlight the work that is being done to provide a higher quality of long-term care across the state of North Carolina.

The awards are given in the areas of media, personal committment and facility excellence as follows:

MEDIA AWARD

This award is given to one individual each year who has addressed critical issues, called attention to deficiencies and advocates for better care. The deadline for nomination for 2011 has already passed.

BEST PRACTICE AWARD

The Best Practice Award honors a North Carolina long-term care facility that strives to

provide quality care to their residents. All long-term care facilities are eligible to be

nominated including CCRCs, Assisted Living Facilities, Family Care Homes and

Nursing Homes. The deadline for nomination for 2011 is October 21, 2011.

SHARON WILDER AWARD

The Sharon Wilder Award honors a citizen in North Carolina who is dedicated to improving

long-term care over the past year. The deadline for nomination for 2011 is October 21, 2011.
