BIO

My life and the events that have led up to my becoming a photographer begin in Lovelady, Texas which is two hours Northeast of Houston. We lived in a two story house built soon after I was born upon the same land that my mother was raised. There were few neighbors and none of them had children to play with so I spent lots of time hanging out with my Granny Nell who also lived with us. She taught me the basics of tap dancing and enjoyed entrancing me with embellished stories of her childhood. The rest of my time was spent alongside my mother. She is a hobbyist and crafting connoisseur with talents that have proven to be limitless. There were always projects going. Painting and sewing, ceramics and baking, the boredom of a crawling hot summer in the country was escaped by getting lost in projects that spanned weeks and months. It was at a very early age that my mother introduced me to a photography as a result of a devastating fire which destroyed our home in 1984. We lost everything including two generations pictures and family history. All the things my grandmother held onto throughout her life and all the things my mother had saved were now gone. From that point on my mothers Minolta went with us everywhere. I began creating images in high school and went on to study Photography at Sam Houston State University and moved to Houston in 1999. I worked at a photo lab (Houston Photo Imaging) for a year or so then started working as an assistant to a busy corporate photographer. I quickly discovered that environment was not the one for me and I moved on while trying to figure out what to do next. My answer soon found me in the form of a beautiful artist, sculptor and painter, Patrick Medrano...my life changed forever. Before our meeting in 2002, I had not considered the images I was creating art. It all felt very personal. A unique moment in time captured so that I would not have to rely on my memory alone to tell the story. The thought of selling them or even showing them to the public as art was something that terrified me. Life with Patrick changed that and I began to see that documenting the world in which I live is not only a way to connect with it, but also a powerful way to create a voice for myself. In 2008, Patrick and I embarked on our biggest collaboration yet. We created The Fodice Foundation, a non-profit aimed transforming a historic building into an East Texas Art Mecca. ABOUT THE COLLABORATION[ Katy Anderson + Patrick Medrano ]Houston based sculptor and painter Patrick Medrano and photographer Katy Anderson began their collaboration soon after they met in 2002. In the 9 years they have spent together they have produced hundreds of now sold pieces of collaborative work. Much of Medrano's work feels methodically aged, but it doesn't belong to any particular historical era. His paintings sometimes feature hairless, nude humans and contain a mechanical element or a depiction of an apparatus that is merged with human elements. At times his sculptures resemble elaborate wooden frames that incorporate exaggerated puppets, mechanisms, electronic devices and lighting elements. The wood is usually darkly stained and coated with bright-colored paint, which Medrano scrapes and sands away, creating a kind of antique patina. Anderson's black-and-white photographs often feature prominently as backgrounds as well as main subjects. Both artists bring their own distinguishing styles, talents, and individual passions to the table when working on a piece and the end results is always moving. Katy Anderson was born in Houston (1979) and raised in Lovelady, Tx.Patrick Medrano was born (1973) and raised in Victoria, Tx.Most recently these two visual artists have combined their energy and talents to create The Fodice Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at transforming a W.P.A. era school building into a famous arts mecca that will be located 2 ½ hours Northeast of Houston. Adorable Engine is a short STOP MOTION animation art film created by Katy Anderson, Patrick Medrano and Dan Medrano. Made up of over 5,000 still frame photographs, the film speaks to the audience about the passing of time ,space and people. Family, friends, even our pets are constantly passing down love and knowledge making inheritable knowledge possible. Adorable Engine celebrate the inherited lifetime we all share, what we've done, what we are doing, and what will we leave behind .
