Using Social Media to Enhance Your Online Presence

The social media phenomenon has obviously gone viral. Thanks in large part to Facebook and MySpace, social media has become one of the most popular sources of free website promotion for yourself, your business or your company. Let’s discuss some of the components that must be included in a social media strategy.

1. Do Your Research

One of the most common mistakes made by individuals who have launched a social media campaign is their lack of research in regards to social media and their targeted audience. It is essential that you know who you are marketing your business to, and the most effective ways to do that, BEFORE you start creating profiles and the like. You can do this simply by looking at what other business in the same industry are doing on different social media sites. If a business only has 40 Facebook fans and a competitor has 4000, look to see the differences in their profiles. Little things like this can give you a competitive edge when thinking about your social media strategy.

2. Go Big or Go Home

It is common for business owners to have doubts about the effectiveness of social media strategies. Many people and small business owners often take a tiny bit of the idea, in regards to implementing it. The worst thing you can do for your company is create a Facebook profile that is only 10% complete. If you are going to go swimming in the world of social media then it is suggested that you dive right in.

3. Know Where You are Going

How can a person or a company reach a goal when one hasn’t been set? It’s impossible. Before launching your social media campaign you must set benchmarks and goals. By this, I don’t mean that you set a goal like “Have a nice Facebook fan page in 30 days.” This is subjective and vague. You need to determine the amount of fans you will have by a certain date, how many new customers were a result of your fan page, etc.

With these components in mind, which a merely just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to social media strategies, it is important to note that you can use your website in conjunction with your social media campaign to make it even more effective.

Let’s take a look at how this can be done:

Cross Promotion

This is single-handedly the best thing you can do when attempting to link your Facebook efforts with those of your website. Every time you add a new piece of content to your website you must promote through all of your social media profiles. By this I mean posting or tweeting a message like "Hey guys…Come check out our newest findings about making money online at (put link to website here)." This will entice all of your friends on your social media profiles to visit your website.

Send Website Visitors to Your Social Media Profiles

This is essentially the opposite of the strategy mentioned above. Create links on your webpage that will take your visitors to your social media profiles. This is advantageous because visitors will be able to see who else is a friend of yours, and the dialogue taking place on your profiles.

Wix makes it easy to do both of these methods.

When you “Publish” your site, be sure you embed it in both your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

To add links from inside your website to your social media networks, go to Clip Art > Icons, and search for whichever network you want to link to. There are fun Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other icons that you can place anywhere inside your free website. To link, simply click on the icon once it’s inside you’re your site, and enter in the URL of your social media profile.
