How to Use Consumer Reviews

Consumer reviews have long been valuable sources of information for people looking to learn more about specific services and products. What once was relegated only to a few focus review websites now spans countless large and small sites, all claiming to have facts and truths for the consumer.

Before accepting everything you read at face value, however, it is important for you to evaluate both the data itself and the site that is presenting the information. The sad truth is that not everything that is posted online is accurate – discerning what is true from what is not is made even more difficult by the plethora of highly reliable data sites available. The following are some useful guidelines that will help you make the most of consumer reviews.

Avoid Emotional Language

A good review always backs up its claims, taking care to support its positive or negative comments with facts and data. If such facts are not present, the review is emotionally-based and should be regarded with caution, as emotions can cloud the truth behind claims and comments. Also, you should be wary of “hard-sell” language, or words that would indicate hidden motives behind a review. While many times that could simply indicate a reviewer who is truly passionate about the product or service, it may be that they are trying to persuade you one way or the other because of underlying goals and desires. Sometimes it may even be that the reviewer has been hired to produce a positive review in hopes that it will persuade other consumers to get on board as well.

Consult Multiple Sites

Since you now know to be wary of overtly emotional language, you can take measures to ensure that you gain a well-rounded understanding of a product or service by looking at multiple reviews on the topic. This will help you weed out biased and prejudiced reviews by being able to compare them to others. If they all seem to convey the same message, you should be able to feel confident that you have an accurate understanding of the facts. Consulting multiple review sites also lets you gain different perspectives that you may have missed before. A good rule of thumb is to start big and work your way down the line – looking first at major established consumer review sites and then looking at smaller, more individual sites to see what they have to say on the subject as well.

Diversify: Individual and General Reviews

As you make your own website, be sure to diversify your review process. After you have taken care to consult multiple review sites and not be taken in by overly emotional language, the next step to making the most out of consumer reviews is diversifying the type of reviews you are looking at. Many sites offer one general review on a topic; while this can be very helpful and informative, it is nice to also gain insight into how actual individuals felt about a product or service. Quite a few websites offer forums where consumers can post their thoughts and comments – somethimes these forums even allow for a back-and-forth conversation. These types of impromptu reviews are typically very candid and can prove to be excellent sources of real and valuable information.
