Basics of Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular methods of earning money online. It’s an advertising system that allows websites to generate cash by providing buyers with access to online stores that supply the products or services they need.

There are several types of affiliate market earnings structures including:

Pay-Per-Click (PPC)

This is probably the most popular way to earn money through affiliate marketing. The way it works is very simple: when you create a website, you include HTML code that an advertiser gives you, and a banner, sidebar or popup advertisement appears on your website. Every time a visitor clicks on the ad, the advertiser pays you for that click (after checking the IP address to prevent spam-like clicks). PPC usually depends on high traffic volumes to pay well, as each individual click usually doesn’t earn more than a couple of bucks.

Pay-Per-Performance (PPP)

This is a more lucrative way to earn advertising revenue from your website but it is also more challenging. Similar to PPC, PPP advertisers give you HTML code that you add to the relevant spaces on the page when you create a website. This code generates advertisements that do not generate any income until the person clicking on them has actually committed to a purchase. The commissions are much higher than PPC because the number of people committing to a purchase is much lower than the number of people clicking through the advert. Merchants prefer this type of affiliate advertising because they only pay out when they make a sale and not just when they receive a lead. Although PPP can be subdivided into Pay-Per-Sale (PPS) or Pay-Per-Lead (PPL), most websites who operate PPP restrict themselves to PPS. PPL is used mostly by companies that require an application form to be filled out to initiate a sales process, such as a loan company or insurance agent.

Lastly, there is residual income affiliate marketing where you are not just paid on the first instance of a PPP ad, you are paid each time the customer returns thereafter and buys something. It is like being paid to introduce someone to a store, then being paid again every time they go back and buy something else. These kinds of deals can really build up revenue, but as expected, finding those lucrative deals can be difficult.

Website Design and Affiliate Advertising

If you are to include affiliate advertising on your website, you need to know how to make a website that is suitable for advertising. You must regard advertising as a “functional” object on your page and not as an intrusion; advertisements must be easy to find and easy to use so it is important to leave appropriate spaces on your web pages in which they can appear. When you join an affiliate program, you will be offered a choice of many different sizes and shapes of advertising, so you will be able to find advertising that fits most banner and sidebar requirements.

Getting Started as an Affiliate

The first step is going to be in deciding what type of advertising you should carry on your website. There are well over 100,000 products from which to choose that you could advertise; fortunately, affiliate programs have devised methods for you to be able to choose sensibly between them. A simple search on Google for affiliate advertising programs will bring up plenty of starting points. These range from ClickBank, which has a relatively simple system, to Google’s AdSense, which is a bit more sophisticated. The available affiliate advertisements will be categorized by the affiliate website so you will be able to choose from a range of products that match the content of your own website. After you have decided upon the type of products that you want to advertise, you will be able to select the ones you like. You will then be given the relevant HTML code that can be inserted into the advertising spaces on your site.

Exercise Some Caution

You can make a free website and carry whatever advertising you like, as there are no restrictions on domains, and there seems to be no limit to the amount of advertising you can place on your website either. However, too much advertising is a turn-off for most visitors. Keep it classy, and don’t let your site turn into one big advertising hub.
