Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid on your Business Blog

A website builder should also know the factors that determine whether their blogs takes off and soars, or whether it takes off and subsequently comes crashing down.

Mistake # 1 - Lack of Dedication

Any endeavor that you want to succeed in requires your dedication. Any successful venture, be it in sports or on the internet, requires your time and concentration. Blogging is a time consuming exercise. Many people set up blogs with a lot of vigor to start with and lots of interesting posts, but slowly these posts turn onto a string of intermittent apologies. Not dedicating time to research, collect and post information on your blog is a surefire way to kill your blog. It does not matter whether your blog has a single post a week or 20 posts in a day; whatever the tempo you started with, try and keep it going and do not deviate too much from the norm.

Mistake # 2 - Blogging for the sole purpose of making money

A large proportion of those who failed at business blogs are people who went into blogging for the money. This is not a good motivator during the tough times. The principle reason why anyone should start a blog should be the fact that they are passionate about the topics they post for readers. Readers can zero in on the fact that a blogger has a lack of passion in the subject matter of his/her blog posts and that puts them off. Making money on your blog is a good thing. However, you should be subtle about that fact. It is prudent that you start a blog about something that you are passionate about and present it well in terms of blog design and the quality of your posts. This will allow you to create a successful readership and consequently monetize the blog. Because you already have the respect of your readers, they are more inclined to visit your website and do business with you.

Mistake # 3 - Jumping on the bandwagon

This is a common mistake found on many business blogs. Many people enter into the world of blogging simply to start researching and writing content on the same subject matter as everyone else. Granted this may sound like a good idea given that the topic would be the “talk of town”, but unless you have something unique to add to the subject, your blog may just get lost in the crowd. The best thing is to look for a clear cut niche that stands out from the rest and then research it well and give readers something fresh to read about. Writing on a subject matter that is unique will get you readers faster than writing about the latest trends.

Mistake # 4 - Going it alone

Most people go into blogging alone with the idea that they are the only ones who are familiar with what they want their blog to project to the readers. Sometimes a blogger cannot be his/her own best critic. It would be a good idea to get an editor, who can go over your work and streamline the content properly. This does not mean that you have to go to a professional editor, though not a bad idea, but you can use a friend or family member. The idea here is to let someone else read the post and give you a different opinion on what you have written, correct grammatical errors, and make general suggestions.

Mistake # 5 - Not hosting the blog on your own platform

Wordpress and Blogger were perhaps the catalyst for the blogging craze. Many people were drawn into the world of blogging with high hopes but very few realized their aspirations. Hosting a business blog on these types of website hosts means that you do not have full control of your content. You are limited in the number and types of applications that you can have on your blog. It is a big mistake to hand over control of your site’s functionality to your host. Such hosts may be ideal for a personal blog but when it comes to business blogs, your identity is very important and you need to stand out on your own, so make sure you go out and host your own blog. If you make a website with Wix, connecting your blog’s RSS to your site is easy and there’s a good video tutorial on connecting your blog to your website.

If your blog is struggling, try implementing several of the suggestions above with your website builder to experience a rebirth.
