Selecting Keywords for Your Website

An overview of keyword selection and usage

Keyword selection is considered the most essential part of creating a website, if you're interested in promoting your site and attracting visitors.

They're typing in "keywords" to find websites that are relevant. Each search term can include one or more keywords that are related to a specific topic. For instance: “baby strollers”, “Mexican food recipes”, "how to remove stains from carpets" and so on. A good keyword selection can boost the traffic on your free website substantially. You've probably heard this before, and you'll probably hear it again: on the web, content is king. It is your content that is read by search engine crawlers, which then compare it to all other relevant websites and decide how to rank you.

That's where keywords kick in. It doesn’t matter if you’re creating a business site or a personal site. Using relevant keywords in your website's content can elevate its position in search engines and increase your traffic.

Choosing the Best Keywords for Your Website

Keyword Selection is the art of choosing the best keywords for your website. These are terms that people are likely to type into internet searches, who don't already know about your website, and won't be searching for you by name. Try thinking of words or terms which are both relevant to your website's content AND are commonly searched for.

There are many keyword selection tools available, that require subscription payments. Unless you are building a massive business website, it's probably not necessary to use these paid services.

Instead, we recommend you spend some time doing your own keyword research. Google's Keyword Tool is free, and provides an enormous amount of keyword selection assistance.

WIX TIPS:

Check out your competition:

If you’re having trouble getting started, find your competitors and check out which keywords they are using.

Use Keyword Phrases:

Keep in mind that most people perform multiple word searches, which means more than one word. So keyword phrases are generally better choices than one keyword. They also allow you to be more specific about all the wonders your website has to offer.

Spread 'em:

Use keywords not only in your website's content, but in your website's title, description and domain name.
