ABOUT
Milton Ng was born and raised in Legal, Alberta, a small town north of Edmonton. He didn't know which profession he wanted to pursue until he wrote and directed his own screenplay, "Cheating with a Cause" in Grade 12 Drama class.
Being acknowledged by his drama teacher, Milton went on to teaching himself how to edit and shoot, and after producing over 30 short films, Milton knew he had to sharpen his skills elsewhere.
Milton made the decision to move to Vancouver and attend Vancouver Film Schoool, where he was selected after submitting his director's proposal for Scumbag Millionaire, his first real short film.
Milton graduated from Vancouver Film School at the end of 2009. He currently works on productions, promotes Movie Skills Workshops and at the same time, he plans to shoot his first feature in the summer of 2010.

100 Hours Film Racing!
Forward Article 4 November 24, 2009
Written by Milton Ng
We were given one theme and one element. It was Privacy and a Balloon. A room full of brainstormers is just wrong!
3:30pm, not a cloud in sight, I blasted a 1K and a 300watt with CTO to form somewhat of a sunlight effect in the exterior shots of Sid and Terry in their car. The mirror shot worked really well, but of course, it's hard to mimic the brightness of the sun without 18K or HMI.
"It was like cancer!" Mike Cosgrave said.
But after an hour, we settled with one. Mike Cosgrave and I headed to our lab to work on the script and finished at 2am. It was "Sex, Lies, and Birthday Cake"
We uploaded our footage, came a problem. The sound static through the export. Brendan Rae, our post production supervisor tried to fix things up with Andrew Yoo and I waiting anxiously. Nothing seemed to work. We are still on standby to see if filmracing able to extend the day to us, due to our technical difficulties.
I've never directed a film in 100 hours before so myself as a filmmaker was put to the challenge. The best thing to do was pre-production was getting locations and actors before the element/prop was released.
BEHIND THE SCENES with MILTON
On the last day, after calculating the whole allocation with my 1st Assistant Camera, I realized I had 6 minutes of tape allocation left to shoot 3 scenes. This turned out to be the biggest problem! A solution would be to cut one of my favourite montage scenes, but critical thinking came along and we shoot the remaining 3 scenes in 1 take.
Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! (I believe those lines are only used in these desperate measures, otherwise it doesn't keep the scene fresh.)
Milton has a hard type keeping the stuffed animal attached to the wall.
"Filming in a 100 hours is a short time. The director, Milton, made the experience so good cause the actors can be under alot of stress when put in a situation with no time. Milton has a way of directing that brings you out and even though we didn't have time to take, take after take, he remained calm and walked us through all the scenes, giving us an opportunity to be our best." said from Vince.
It was a fun little sex comedy that we developed and are proud. Thus not making filmracer or not, this film will be entered into different festivals and video contests.

Chow! ^_^
My good friend Vince Ficetola came on board. He went to play the character Sid, the boyfriend who's willing to share his girlfriend, played by Lisa Ovies, in a threesome birthday gift to his best friend, Barry John Newman. Little do they know, the girlfriend is cheating on Sid with another man, Will, played by Van Echeverri.
"When we fell in the driveway when I opened the closet door to reveal angry Van and there he was, his face, Terry just killed me, so funny!" says from Vice Ficetola, who played Sid Chatwin.
"It was a exciting new challenge in my life that definetly changed my learning curve to say the less." Barry said about his first short film.
We finished shooting and rushed to the edit lab to get the piece together. For some reason, I thought it was due on Sunday, at 9pm but it was later found out that it was due at 9pm the next day.
EPISODE 1 - UPHILL SKIING
I must say, I'm not a fan of Advid editing system. Midway through editing, I had to rush home to do pick up shots. It was a rainy weekend and I needed exterior sunny days cause my Cinematagrapher, Glenn Somera, shed orange sunlight through the windows. It was quite simple.
INTERVIEW WITH GLENN SOMERA
Forward Article 2
OCTOBER 15, 2009
Interviewed by Milton Ng
Milton: I'm trying to think of other questions for you.
Glenn: Why am I so good looking? (laughs)
Milton:What other cinematographers are influences to you?
I caught up with my friend, Glenn Somera and took the time to interview him about his experience on Scumbag Millionaire.
Milton: So Glenn, how are you doing today?
Glenn: Good, next question.
Milton: Such a big ego Glenn, is that type of person you are?
Glenn: No, I just don't like you asking me questions.
Milton: Alright, could you tell us why you chose to be a cinematographer?
Glenn: It's because it's the cinematic look that makes the movie. Cause if you got some shitty look, you're thrown out of the story. That includes acting, art directing, set dressing, that's why you got to work with all the artist people to make it look good.
Milton: Sorry. Okay, can you tell us what the experience was to be accepted in the top 6 Director of Photography positions in class 126 of Vancouver Film School?
Glenn poses with his new
working glasses.
Glenn: You shouldn't ask me that question.
Milton: Why?
Glenn: Because, that's just, an immature thing to ask. Why don't you just ask me my favourite movies that have great cinematic views?
Milton: Okay, answer that.
Glenn: I got none.
(Milton & Glenn both laugh)
Glenn: On a serious note, I would say Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The Illusionist for sure. I'm going to watch that tonight. 28 Weeks Later, 28 days Later, Fight Club, Apocalypto, Blindness, The City of God, hrmmm, Star Trek, oh yeah, Star Trek, Terminator Salvations, Slumdog Millionaire and Hurt Locker.
Milton: That's alot of movies. Could you tell us what new exciting project you'll be working on next?
Glenn: None. (laughs)
Milton: (laughs) Well Glenn, thank you for the interview.
Glenn: Thank you!
Milton Ng & Genn Somera work on their first film together, "Scumbag Millionaire".
Glenn checks the frame on the
set of "Hussain".
Glenn and Milton work together
on the set of "Hussain"
Glenn: It was an amazing experience to make top 6 because I was an underdog all the way down to the bottom and I made it all the way up to the top.
Milton: Could you tell us what was it like to be a Director of Photography on Scumbag Millionaire and how did you achieve the look that I wanted?
Glenn: All I cared about was my lights, seeing if it looks good and if does not. Some shots, they did not look good and some of them would look good. 15" kinos and 4 bank kinos are your best friend on set. And a good grip. Mr. Brendan Rae. That should come to meetings and stuff.
Milton: (laughs)
Glenn: Where is that guy?
Milton: What was your greatest challenge on the show?
Glenn: Lighting a small tight space.
Milton: Could you elaborate on that?
Glenn: Lighting a VERY small ight space. (laughs)
Milton: What did you think of the food on set of Scumbag Millionaire?
Glenn: Lasagna was awesome!

DIRECTOR'S BLOCK
One of the most challenging scenes in the film was the scene with water. Yes, WATER! It was one of the montage scenes where we had to dolly out of Aadhi Vive in the water. Aadhi gave us his all, but his body would keep being pushed south of the hot tub by the waves.
Of course, the best takes were when Aadhi's head popped out of the water a little early when the camera was still rolling...He was suppose to play a dead guy!

Forward Article 1
Originally, Scumbag Millionaire was meant to be about Josh, a no good criminal who is forced into putting community service hours of reading to Brian, an elderly man at the hospital. When Josh finds out Brian is leaving his will to Josh in 6 months, Josh's friend Steve, convinces him to kill Brian right away.
I wanted to raise the stakes for Josh, give him headache and corner him. I pitched to the board in exchange for Steve, it would be a female role, to be Josh's girlfriend. Love and sex would be the weapons and putting Josh in much a further pickle.
It was for that reason that I got picked to direct this film. I've directed many short films prior before taking on this project, but needless to say, none of the previous work compared to this.
Milton gives an adjustment to Aadhi (in water) as Producer, Andrew Yoo watches.
I remember waking up in the morning on the day we had exterior shooting. I looked outside and quickly called my AD, Nicholas, because I saw clouds. Clouds scared the crap out of me! He assured me everything would be okay and that he was! I say that my first film turned out great!
1) I finally got to work with a film camera.
2) I got real crew and actors.
3) I got real equipment (Yeah for Dolly!)
In pre-production, I got a taste of some real problems during shooting a film. We were suppose to find a hospital for Brian's deathbed but had no luck. Discussing options with my Producer, Andrew Yoo, and my Art Director, Leigh Ann Bellamy,
Milton (red) and Glenn (Yellow) check out the dolly shot on the monitor.
I like to thank Alex Daniels for writing such unique script. We had a great location thanks to Andrew Yoo, our lighting was incredible from Glenn Somera, being his first show he ever lit for.
Thanks to our camera team, Maurice Alexander and Thanh Doan for giving me great shots. Brendan Rae, you all star editor! Thanks to my art director, Leigh Ann Bellamy with assistant and sound mixer Zach O'Dell made one great team in creating a blue donkey!
Thanks to Nicholas Arnold the Assistant Director and the youngest crew member, for keeping a smooth set. Lastly, thanks to post Sound team at VFS Sound Campus, VFS faculty, the background performers, Aadhi Vive, Jonathan Stuppin, Jalil Gonzalez, Nick Malcolm and still photographer, Mark Bulow.
Stay tuned for release of Scumbag Millionaire in 2010!
Milton watches the scene play out with his AD, Nicholas Arnold.
we thought about dressing a bedroom to look like a hospital room. Given only a $550 budget, making a believable hospital room was going to be tough.
A week before shooting, Andrew Yoo scored us an amazing location. We got a yacht! The yacht raised our production value of the film and we got some really nice shots of the scenery.
When auditions came along, my Casting Director/Assistant Director, Nicholas Arnold did an outstanding job getting 63 actors to show up. In the end, we casted Charles Carl to play Jake, Carrie-Ann Bailey for Erica, Dick Pugh for Brian and Bombyx Du Murier as Jake.
When shooting came along, our first location was at Zach O'Dell's apartment. Zach, being art assistant, did warn us how tight the apartment would be, but I wanted a small cramped up apartment for Josh and Erica. I am pretty sure my DP, Glenn Somera and Nicholas Arnold were not happy with the number of shots I asked for, but I had my reasons for every one of them. ^_^

HOSPITAL ROOM MADE WITH $14!
Another scene ws the hospital hallway. It was carpet, but we were able to find out that some hospitals do indeed have carpet floors.
Getting some hospital signage at Super Props which pointed arrows with x-ray and recovery was all I needed. Thanks to painter's tape and double sided tape, no walls were ruined.
From left, Glenn (Dr. Brown), the Paterson family, Dawson (Ben), Cally (Kim), Pete (Brad), in the recovery room.
Forward Article 3 NOVEMBER 7, 2009
From left, Milton Ng discusses the shot with director, Van Echeverri.
The final projects for our final term got me settled down for the role of Art Director in Van Echeverri's "Donor". A story about a father and husband who makes the decision of doing an illegal heart transplant to save his 9 year old son's life.
Our Producer, Bill Mandair, got a hold of over 10 hospitals and clinics but had no luck with trying to nail down a location. I blame the seaon of swine flu and H1N1! Now I was put with a challenge, to make a hospital room!
Did I mention I got to make a cameo as a doctor? *cough* background performer*cough*
After the whole hospital shots, we screened dailies and found softfocus for the waiting room. We had no choice but to reshoot at a different location, the VFS administrator building. This, turned out for the better good, all thanks to marble walls!
After getting a day away from the hospital, we travelled to Surrey to shoot at a home the house of the Paterson family. I had made kid like sketches and colored them prior when we were doing auditioins a week back.
Designing a 9 year old boy's room was pretty fun, reliving my childhood. The only drawback, was when Dawson (Ben), would say no to some of the toys I put up to be for his room. ^_^
Final Note: Tape, scissors, thumb tacs, blue tac, and more tape are aart director's best friend!
The school only giving us a lousy $550 budget, I was off to hit the art stores. After scoring an amazing deal at Super Props, I was able to get everything I needed for only $14 (2 cases of Barq's root beer)
Dawson (Ben) lays in bed waiting for final touches.
A real hospital bed cost $400/week to rent. I quickly said no thanks to that!
Instead, I grabbed my best friend, duct tape, and strapped on 2 rails along the side of a cot. I squished a single size mattress in between and boosted the bed with a apple box to mimic the hydraulics. I topped it off with blue, blue, and more blue.
To rent a food cart and a night table was $45 a piece. Luckily, the school had a desk that was perfect size. A little bit of pudding and pills was all it took to sell it. I was able to find a desk, which I used a simple blue sheet to cover up the scratches. Nobody noticed ;)
The rest of the set dec was really just looking at how other hospital shows looked like. Discussing looks with Director, Van Echeverrie and Director of Photography, Adam Epp, we decided there was no need for the backboard, which would have held a nice kino lit light for backlighting.
Ben Paterson's bedroom.
I attempted to make one out of cardboard, duct tape and attaching some plug ins... it turned out looking like a grade 3 arts and craft project.
A doctor nose check piece along with a balloon, plant and of course, beautiful blue curtain and voila, a hospital room!
TIMOTHY's "ALWAYS TURN BACK" RELEASED!
"Call my Aunt and tell her to give you the keys."
said Brendan.
Calling Brendan's aunt was pretty funny, trying to convince her that we indeed had a deadline to meet. What happeend? Another failure.
New years arrived and I got word from Brendan that he was motivated and pumped to meet the deadline of the music video. Our producers were a little worried like always but I liked to keep their hearts pumping.
It was 3 intense days of editing and we got it done.
We are getting word from a music
video contest from it being on Veoh and it could possibly be picked up and in the runs for a few prizes. Exciting? Yes!
It was a great experience for myself. I was challenged to tell a story with pictures and emotion.

Forward Article 5 January 23, 2010
I believe it all started way back in October of 2009 at the Cafe, where the EBM class of Vancouver Film School were pitching their final projects. I quickly got interested and made contact with Producers Lindsay
MacPherson and Vasilis Kalatharas.
A music video of their friend's band, Timothy, was to be their final project. That was the beginning of the train ride...
Where to begin? Pre-production of course! With two months of pre-production, we had to settle with a story first. I didn't get a chance to meet the band, but on the day of shoot, the story I had in mind was something they were looking for.
I wouldn't have done this without my crew who worked so hard and am thankful for the producers to bring me on board. The next music video coming up will only get better ^_^
It was the first music video I ever shot. So many things to learn, about using a loud playback. We tried to use...lap top speakers? Epic fail! We upgraded to using the cafe's speakers they use for kareoke nights.
Lead singer, Scott Bjerkness sings
another round without getting tired.
Gary Koah shows Milton a shot
during the cafe scene.
My Director of Photography, Glenn Somera, did a great job of lighting the stage. We used (3) 300 watts and experimented throughout the day throwing on purple color gels. Glenn then used a fog machine to keep pumping the smoke on stage. Its simple lighting gave us a great look on stage.
Art Director, Adele Blandin, worked on light bulbs being hung from the ceiling to give the backlight glow effect.
One of the funniest things that happened was when Christopher Tobiesen , art assistant, grabbed scissors and tried to cut one of the wires. We were unaware that the lights were still plugged in, resulting in spark rain!
After shooting, I remember calling my friend, Brendan Rae, to tell him about our editing job next. Our 2 week edit ended up turning into 1 month duration.
Brendan flying home for holidays while not knowing his Aunt went to Hong Kong stirred up problems for the resulting factor of our video. Our producers were sweating bullets!
A crew picture after wrap up, from left, Adele Blandin, Matt Carpenter, Charlene Lee, Glenn Somera, Vasilis Kalatharas, Lindsay MacPherson, Vince Ficetola, Gary Koah, and Milton Ng.
