The son of a Baptist preacher and a hard working mother, John H. Young, Sr. began gleaning and learning the lessons of determination, perseverance, and an unwavering faith at an early age as he watched his parents struggles.
He was raised by a determined single mother and he was his daddys best kept secret for almost 10 years. He watched as his mother worked 3 jobs to keep him in private school and made sure he had the best she could afford. He was active in the church that his father pastored for 18 years and witnessed a church and community that once celebrated the innovative young pastor, literally kick him to the curb and watched him deteriorate into a man robbed of the fruit of his labor.
Determined to never allow what was witnessed to happen to him, John Young ventured into lifes lessons with an unquenchable determination.
While applying for High School, John Young was denied placement in the Music program of the Performing Arts Academy. Determined to attend the school, he applied for the Telecommunications major instead. Upon acceptance into the school, he still pursued his interest in music, teaching himself to play 4 musical instruments, and by age 14 he became one of the youngest Ministers of Music of one of the largest Baptist churches of that era.
While studying Radio and Television in high school, Young applied for various jobs at local radio and television stations. At every turn he was turned down. He served as an intern at several stations, and learned everything he could. During this time he also accepted the call to ministry, and volunteered to answer the phones for a local radio show, with hopes of one day being allowed to host the show as a fill in. Those dreams were dashed when the station cancelled the gospel programming.
Young left Buffalo in 1984, and travelled with the late Rev. John Robertson of Pontiac, MI as his musician and personal assistant. It was during this time that the now 18 year old began to learn and glean the many lessons regarding ministry, evangelism, and entrepreneurialism that he shares with those he mentors. While on the road, he learned that his father had died, and returned to Buffalo in 1986, and served as acting pastor of the Unity Baptist Church (the church his father pastored at the time of his demise).
They thought I was him, recalls Pastor Young of his first pastorate. In a very short period of time, I realized I could never be him, I had to be me. The 20 member church had grown to over 125 in attendance, when he was told by the Deacon Board that they no longer needed his services. It was like a repeat of what happened to my father. says Young. Pastor Young lost the church by 1 vote during the official election of the congregation and he ventured out on his own.
With a small following, Young founded the Monument of Faith Fellowship Center in 1987, which worshipped in a small rundown building directly across the street from his former church. The young congregation flourished and eventually moved into the former Red Barn restaurant on Kensington Avenue in Buffalo NY in 1989 when it was formally incorporated. During this period, Pastor Young, launched one of the first religious television shows Oh Give Thanks on Courier Cable in 1988. The 1-hour gospel music show was picked up by a local television station and aired for 3 years.
At the age of 25, the young cashed strapped pastor, husband, and father of 3 was struggling to make ends meet. The pressures of maintaining the church, TV ministry, and household were draining the young preacher, not only financially, but was affecting his marriage, and his spiritual drive. The decision was made to discontinue the TV show for radio and on October 13, 1991, Totally Gospel was born. The 4-1/2 hour gospel music and ministry program was launched to replace the cancelled programming a few years earlier. I didnt have the money. recalls Pastor Young, I just knew how to work the equipment because of my experience in High School. A gentleman had walked into my office, and noticed a quote for the airtime on WHLD-AM 1270. He asked me if I really wanted it, and my first reaction was similar to the man at the Pool of Bethesda. He responded, answer my question, and I said YES! recalls Pastor Young. The man didnt have the money either, but by the time the first payment really needed to be paid, the man had signed the first sponsor.
That wasnt enough to ease the burden of Pastor Young, with his marriage on the rocks, mounting financial pressures and a congregation that comprised of teenagers, college students, and welfare recipients, Young who had been juggling a full-time job as a bill collector, serving as a musician for a local church, pastoring, and struggling with the new Radio Ministry decided to disband the church, and walked away from his wife of 3 years.
It was a time of refocus. At first, I thought I had failed. says Pastor Young. But in fact, it was a decision that propelled him on a mission, that has made an impact on several communities throughout the country and serves as a living testament that if you are faithful over a few things, God will make you ruler over many.
Young left everything behind except the Radio Ministry. Wife, kids, home, church, everything. All I had were my clothes, a TV, a old Lazy Boy Chair and the radio program. My refrigerator was the window in the pantry of the kitchen in the small apartment I rented next door to a crack house. Pastor Young. I eventually got a couch that I slept on for nearly a year as most of my money went to take care of my children and ministry bills. Pastor Young set up a studio and office in his apartment, and painstakingly began to build on his Radio ministry. Within 6 months, the time he had purchased was sold out, and he continually bought more, systematically creating Western New Yorks only source of nighttime gospel programming. For the next 5 years, God allowed Pastor Young to experience every lesson imaginable for what was next to come. Throughout those 5 years, the lessons of sacrifice, perseverance, determination, and humility became clearer and clearer. There wasnt a week that went by, that a new challenge presented itself. But I just REFUSED TO LOSE!
In 1996, Pastor Young was approached by the brokers of a different local radio station to expand his successful programming to a Morning Drive position. Young walked through that door of opportunity September 15, 1996 and the Morning Worship Club was born. The new contemporary gospel music program was an instant success and 8 months later, in an unprecedented move of faith, Young bought all the hours on the station and launched the first and only full-time gospel radio station Heaven 1120 - WHTT-AM. From 1996-1999, Pastor Young and a Dream Team of displaced radio professionals, excited employees, and volunteers took an empty station and built what was affectionately called The place miracles.
The original staff was a machine that worked harmoniously together. Some even invested there own money, or would forego a paycheck if we were in a crunch. They respected the vision and thats what made Heaven 1120 so special. Everyone knew it was a grassroots, low budget operation, but they didnt care. They were glad to be apart of history.
During that period, Pastor Young got married again, bought a house, and was called to Pastor the United Church of Faith Interdenominational in 1997. In 1998, he expanded the ministry to cable television which simulcasted the station. It seemed that everything he had left was returned and he was living a very exciting and prosperous life.
But everything came to a screeching halt in 1999, as the broker forged a deal with the new owners of the station, offers to staff from another local gospel radio station prompted some to leave the station, while others assisted the broker to in essence steal the business by cutting the audio feed from the Totally Gospel studios, playing gospel music from another location, and contacting all of the clients to continue doing business with the broker direct.
Unbelievable!!! All those years of work, all the money invested, everything just gone by a flip of a switch, and a few phone calls. Pastor Young was devastated but determined. He continued the Morning Worship Club on the cable station, until the operator (the city of Buffalo) cut the feed and began playing local secular music. And to make matters worse, the congregation that celebrated him as a hero for turning around the 5 member church into a 200+ congregation began infighting. Growing bitter with the local scene, which reminded him once again of his fathers demise, Pastor Young resigned from the church and re-launched the ministry he had closed 10 years prior.
The new church plant Fellowship Christian Center is still a Monument of Faith!!! The 13 member congregation quickly flourished, and within 3 weeks had moved from the basement of the Holiday Inn. I received a call from the board of directors of the church I had resigned from, and they decided to disband. They had selected our ministry as the beneficiary of all of the churches assets including the 1600 seat building. says Young. The church had basically dwindled back to the 5 original members.
Young moved the congregation back to the facility, launched a national radio ministry on Dominion Sky-Angel / DISH Network and began to forge his way in a different direction. The national ministry was short lived, but to Young it was a lesson well learned. He moved the radio programming to WXRL-AM 1300 in Lancaster, NY, but wasnt satisfied. The Lord had other plans for him.
The Lord took me to the Book of Job 42;10... and God turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends. Young recounts. It was the most hardest thing for me to do. I was angry and bitter with the pastors of the city, politicians, and the staff that helped the broker steal the business. I cried like a baby, curled up on my bed, asking God to forgive them and me. The next day I was instructed by the Lord to call the broker. I thought to myself, its been 5 years. Ive sued them. The last person they would even speak to would be me. Thank God, Pastor Young was obedient. After a couple of snide remarks, the conversation quickly turned into opportunity. Within weeks, the brokers flew to meet with Pastor Young and March 2004, 3 months later he was back at the helm of Heaven 1120. With a new congregation, and return to radio you would think that the story would be over. A happy ending... not so, it gets better.
In August of 2004, Pastor Young moved the congregation to its present location and built radio studios in the facility. Opportunities continually were presented to Pastor Young. A fledgling credit union needed emergency headquarters, a defunct cluster of radio stations in Pine Bluff, Arkansas were offered, a construction loan to complete renovations was offered, angel investors manifested, a struggling church merged with Fellowship, and another needed space to launch a new ministry. Pastor Young formed a new company Excel Radio Networks LLC., and opened the state of Minnesotas first 24 hour Gospel Radio station and thats not all.
In February 2006, a different company intruded the contracts of the broker that intruded Pastor Young and they were out of the door. The new company wasnt interested in Gospel, and handed the entire business over to Pastor Youngs new company Excel Radio Networks. The new company that already had blessed Pastor Young with his business back got into financial trouble, and offered a new frequency to move to. On December 18, 2006, Pastor Young launched Western New Yorks first and only 24 hour gospel station. Guess where.... WHLD-AM 1270 (where the journey began). The company that offered the new frequency to Pastor Young went belly up, and immediately Pastor Young forged a deal to not only lease the stations, but buy them. In March of 2007, Pastor Young launched WSIR-AM 1490 and reprogrammed it Totally Gospel as well.

John Young
"The Comeback Kid"
One day Peter and John were going up to the temple, and at the time of prayer at three in the afternoon a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate and which was called beautiful which was were he was put everyday to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter he asked them for money, Peter looked straight at him as did John, then Peter said Look at us. Acts 3:1
It may be interesting to know the confidence and resolve to which Peter and John approached this situation. They said "look at us".
This crippled man epitomized the Greek words:
pincharos which means someone who barely has his or her daily subsitance met pichatos which is a beggar which is so poor they have nothing.
Peter and Johns physical disposition is one that is bentlooking down. The latter description is the closest depiction of this man who was also looking down. He was so destitute that he lacked the self esteem and self image that would allow him to make eye contact with his benefactors.
What has beaten down this man to the point that he couldnt look up? Had the events in his life humiliated him to the point that all he could bare to see is the ground?
The story also desicibes him as having a disability since birth. At first glance at the word disability, you quickly assume the person cannot do anything. That is the furthest thing from the truth. Lets break this word down:
Dis is a prefix which denotes lack. to be deficient or missing something
Ability denotes aptitude, acquired or learned or a developed component of competency (knowledge, understanding and attitude) to do a certain kind of work at a certain level. Abilities or Aptitudes may be physical or mental. The innate nature of aptitude is in contrast achievement, which represents knowledge or ability that is gained.
Now that we know the definition, the issue the man faced was his perception of himself. If one percieves that they lack the ability, they do nothing.
Where did this man get his perception of himself. The story suggests that he was taught it since birth and it was even being reinforced by those around him, for the story states they carried him. This is typical of the dependant society in which we have created for ourselves. Think about it since birth, this man was nurtured to be dependant instead of independent. He was made to believe that anything we was going to receive, he had to depend on someone else. He was carried to a place to beg.
He had to depend on someone to carry him to a place, so he could beg (depend) someone else to survive.
We see this everyday and dont even realize what we have done. Father, we have sinned! From our national dependance on government handouts, welfare programs, and subsidized ventures, we are literally carrying people to a place to beg. We teach our children that they can do anything, and be successful then snatch there dreams away with the ultimate reality check word but. The word but implies that the following clause is contrary to prior belief. The mixed messages that we send of you can, but has caused great emotional and pschological harm, and has produced dependancy on others.
Using my imagination, this man was told because of his condition, that he could not work. But why couldnt he? His fingers, arms, mouth, eyes, ears, and BRAIN, were working just fine. He had ample tools to do whatever he wanted to do, but his focus was placed (intentionally or not) on what he couldnt do.
The epidimec of racism in America is a prime example. We all were taught the so called American Truth that all men were created equal. But was it the truth? It has taken many a decade and still prevelant in the 21st century, the statement made by the founding fathers has been eroded into a statement that needs further review.
All men define man Created physical, spiritually, emotionally, socially, economically Equal To what? To each other or to our perceptions of each other?
How demeaning. No wonder this man was begging. Are you?
The story continues, that he bowed his head to the ground and extended his hand for alms and Peter noted this humbling characteristic about this man.
Have you really noticed those who may be begging or those who may be destitute? Im not just refering to the typical panhandler. They are bold, confident, and persistant. They are professionals. They look the part, act the part, and are very convincing. It is their job (routine) to get up every morning, hit the streets, and sell themselves as pitiful souls to their gullible consumer. The more convincing their story (sales), the more money they collect (profit). At the end of the day, they take there profits and invest it in their business. In order to be an effective panhandler, you must appear to be in need, sick, addicted, destitute, homeless, and the list can go on and on. It is one of the most profitable businesses in the world and its tax-free!
This is not the picture represented in the scripture. This man wasnt your typical beggar. This was a man who had humility written all over him. Im picturing those who have been beaten down by life itself. Those whose dreams were shattered. Those whose relationships have continually failed. Or maybe even the person who has been silently abused mentally, physically, financially, and yes, even spiritually.Im picturing a man who was given bad advice, and was misdirected. Im picturing a good man, with good intentions BUT
the words, actions, and deeds of those around him erased everything he could and should have been.
Have you really noticed someone who has been depleted of something so wonderful as their dream.Their self esteem has withered and their self image has been exhasted so that they can not even muster the courage to make eye contact with you? They seemingly are embarrassed but recognize that they have a need and they come to you humbly and submit themselves to you. You look down at them and recognize that although they may be physically in your presence, something is missing. They come to you and although they are present in their body, they are absent from the Lord.
As I read this scripture, I hear Peter saying I dont want to just give you something so that you can go away and come back empty again. I want to give you more than a meal that will be consumed and you will hunger again. I want to give you more than a few dollars that will be depleted in a short period of time. I want to give you what I have.
While looking down at the man, Peter probably reflected back at the time when he was shallow water fishing. A stranger by the name of Jesus walked up to him and his staff and asked him, if he could use his boat to teach from. As Peter looked over the shoulder of this stranger, he saw a crowd of people following behind him. Peter gave him what he had... A boat. Peter perhaps thought that the man needed to escape, but instead, Jesus used what Peter had as a stage to teach. After teaching the people, Jesus told Peter to launch out in to the deep. Peter and his staff explained to Jesus that they had been fishing all day and caught little of nothing. Jesus probably looked Peter straight in the eye, and without saying another word to him, Peter consented and sailed his boat into deep water and cast out his nets and caught a big catch.Jesus taught Peter a powerful overlooked lesson....Confidence.
Jesus was not about to take the boat, cast the nets, and fish for him to prove his point. With confidence he conveyed his request to Peter and the result was that Peter and his staff consented and acted upon his confident statement. By looking Peter in the eye, there was a sense of assurance that Peter could achieve something by Jesus request.
For the crippled man, the first objective was to make eye contact. To restore the mans self esteem, confidence, and faith. His goal was for the beggar to see eye to eye with him and the word of God. There is no doubt that if you desire to minister to anyone you must build up ones character, ones self esteem, and ones self image. If you dont accomplish that task alone, you will constantly have individuals begging instead of succeeding.
The Apostles said, Look at us, let me see you the real you! Not someone that was made by your circumstance, but someone that was made by God.
Look at Us, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Look at Us, we to were dependant on shallow-mindedness until we lauched out into the deep. Look at us, we ran from our destiny, denied our heritage, and stood back and watched as he was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. The chatisement we deserved was placed upon him, but now we are are healed (forgiven).
Look at us, we have spiritual gifts in heavenly places. Silver and gold we have not for our treasures are laid up in heaven. Just look at us, Look up and see we have more to offer than just a handout, a welfare check, a loosey, a forty bowl, or a joint.
Look at us, we have much more than a one night stand, or a false promise. Look at us, what we have to give wont cost you the rest of your life, but impact your life where you can profit for eternity.
Come on man! Come on Woman! Let me see your tear stained eyes. Its OK, for weeping may endure for a night but JOY comes in the morning.Excuse me, I felt a preach right there.
You have been made by God and because of that you ought to see yourself beautiful, wonderful, and unique. There may be something wrong with you, but there is a whole lot thats right with you.. I know that you've got your head down, but today, I want you to lift it up.
You may feel desponded, disgusted, and maybe even feel at the dead end of the road. Your circumstances keep telling you there is no hope. That everything around you is crumbling but my friend look, look at us Let me see the real you!
There is something inside of you so powerful, strong, and vibrant. A passion that can not be quenched. And if you could just look up...Look at us, maybe we can ignite that fire again so when the command comes forth for you to rise, we stretch forth our hand to assist you to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Empower you to be steadfast and unmoveable. Encourage you to endure to the end. Motivate you, that you will jump up, you will leap up and you will go forth in the fullness of your life.
And to those of you who are in ministry, I want you to take note to whom you are ministering too. Are you ministering to what the world created? Or are you ministering to whom God created? Are you humble enough to admit that We Have Sinned. Can you tell the beggar in your congregation to look you in the eye, lock in to the spirit and say, I have something better for you.
