Weekend Independent - Editors Note.pdf
The Carter Academy (TCA) is a community-based school that provides a globally competitive education to motivated students exhibiting academic promise. Established in a remote village of Bangladesh, TCA is a technologically-equipped, residential institution, whose curriculum emphasizes leadership, life skills, and physical fitness in a disciplined academic setting.
We are a secular institution where the open exchange of ideas is encouraged and practiced. We aim to create future entrepreneurs and leaders who will have a global perspective, while maintaining a commitment to the enrichment of Bangladesh.
Aspiring to develop Bangladesh by providing outstanding, free education to academically worthy, but less fortunate, children living in rural areas.
Located in the village of Islamabad under the sub-district of Matlab North in Chandpur, Bangladesh, the Carter Academy recruits only the finest young men to attend our secondary school. Under the instruction of our dedicated and experienced faculty and staff, students are offered a first rate education based solely on their academic achievements and NOT on their financial eligibility. TCA is primarily funded by donations and is supported by the organization National Development Initiative.
To ensure that students can be groomed into this new environment, they are selected straight from their primary schools. Education at the Carter Academy begins where most primary schools have left off, the sixth grade. The students are approximately 11 to 12 years of age which is the ideal age to indoctrinate them into a new, entirely English curriculum.
During the selection process, there are many factors taken into consideration. Initial assessment considers students primary school board examination results. This examination is taken at the culmination of their basic education.
If their scores meet our criteria, we then administer a series of tests which consist of written skills and oral expression, physical fitness, confidence and determination, co-curricular activities, and so on.
In order to fairly and correctly evaluate students during this intensive selection process, a committee comprised of the Principal, Curriculum Advisor and three other board members is employed. The committee members score each student along the given criteria and a cumulative average is obtained. This average is used to determine the successful candidate. At the present time, the aforementioned is the optimum system for the TCA admissions process, but it will be continuously improved as we see fit.
Our intention is to enroll only the best candidates available in the families spread throughout this region. The policy of the Carter Academy is to admit only one student per immediate and/or extended family. By incorporating such a practice, we will be able to spread this tremendous opportunity to various cross-sections of the region as well as strata of the society. We look forward to these young men becoming future leaders in their fields. Upon graduation from TCA, we anticipate their joining the best colleges and universities throughout the world. Our goal, and the main impetus behind our philosophy, is to see their individual success permeate to their families and their localities. By selecting candidates from diverse locales, a wider area - encompassing all communities in the region - will benefit and development and progress will be achieved.

JSC Award Ceremony
All sixteen of TCA students that partook in the 2011 8th Class Comilla Board Examination (JSC), have passed with a GPA of 5 leaving the entire board stunned. This is the only school that has received a 100% top score in all of Bangladesh.
To congratulate the scholars, Chairman Ghulam Suhrawardi personally visited the school to present awards to all the boys. In an assembly hall packed with students and their family, Mr. Suhrawardi reiterated the importance of a quality education for children living in villages. The Carter Academy administers an English version of the Comilla board curriculum which includes sports, debating, and other extracurricular activities at its’ core. It is the schools’ goal to prepare the future leaders of Bangladesh by teaching social values and the spirit of true leadership.
Mr. Suhrawardi has proven that everyone can have a exceptional education regardless of financial and social status, geographical location, and other obstacles that may deter a child of the village from seeking an education. In the future, TCA will establish a play group, kindergarten, primary school, and high school for girls and young women. Eventually, Mr. Suhrawardi would also like to construct a university in the area which will house a hospital-clinic serving the people in the greater Matlab region. With the incredible success of The Carter Academy, we are all excited to see what will happen next!
TCA students and their incredible achievements have recently been recognized by several news publications (see right for links).

Tuition, Room & Board
We recognize that choosing an independent school, especially a boarding school, is a major decision for families. The Majeda-Anowar Foundation (MAF) will sponsor and adopt the financial responsibilities of the academy, allowing the cost of room and board (uniforms, modern amenities, and clean dormitories), as well as tuition, to remain free for all eligible students.
MAF was formed to honor the parents of the founder, Mr. Ghulam Suhrawardi, whose ancestry stems from this particular village and region. Established in a remote village, indicative of the pulse of Bangladesh, the Carter Academy recruits only candidates ranging from the sixth to twelfth grade levels.

A students' education begins in the sixth grade and continues for seven years. Each class generally has an average of 25 students. Academic subjects that are taught at TCA, include: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Bengali, English, Economics, Civics, History, Religious studies, Arts and Crafts, and Geography. Throughout the course of their education, students are rigorously prepared for three very important exams - the Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC) in eighth grade, Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in tenth grade, and the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) in the twelfth grade. Successful completion of the HSC is necessary for graduation from TCA.
The Carter Academy seeks students who combine academic ability, intellectual curiosity, and determination coupled with decency and good character. We strive to instill the principles of honesty, tolerance, compassion, and responsibility to each individual. In addition, the daily interactions of a residential school also nurture integrity, empathy, and kindness - social skills that are necessary in this world today. TCA seeks to graduate young people whose creativity and independence of thought sustain their inquisitive and reflective minds; whose interest in others and the world around them surpasses their self-concern; and whose passion for learning motivates them to move beyond what they already know. The transcendence of these ideals will influence the progression of the community and the enrichment of Bangladesh.
Teachers and staff play an integral role in the learning process. At TCA, we have carefully selected the most professional staff available who provide a holistic, well-rounded education and outlook. As mentors, the instructors and teachers of the Carter Academy provide guidance and discipline to the student body. As an academy that fosters leadership, instructors and teachers continuously examine the educational and personal goals of each student in relation to special interests, strengths, and weaknesses.
Whether it is playing on a sports team or having supper in the Dining Hall, living at the academy offers an exceptional experience - a chance to be surrounded by friends, classmates, and mentors. The crux of residential life at the Academy focuses on the amount of thought and attention given to creating a warm and supportive environment within each students living space. Faculty, staff, and students work together to ensure that the school is a healthy, clean, and a stimulating place to live and learn; a place where the spirit of openness, honesty, and concern for others prevails.
