Singing is what we do!!Are you one of the many who say... "I wish I could sing"? Have you ever been told you can't? Have you always wanted to but couldn't find your voice?Singing is not reserved for the 'lucky few'. It's our privilege and our right as human beings--we breathe, we walk, we sing. It's what we do, but somewhere along the way, between messages like close your mouth, men don't cry, you can't sing, you have an ugly voice, etcetera, we've repressed and hidden our very primal instinct to express ourselves and our spirits through our voices. I can help you reconnect with that instinct.I can give you the tools you need to find your voice again, get rid of tension which is getting in your way, tension you don't even know you've created. I can help you use your breath and your body to create and support your sound. I can help you reconnect with your body, become more aware. It's simpler and more straightforward than you think. You just need the right tools, direction and encouragement, in a language which you'll understand and which will resonate within you (pun intended).You'll wonder why you didn't do it before!!

My Teaching PhilosophyOver the years I have developed an approach to teaching which is organic and natural, whether it is in the voice studio or the choir room. My approach to choral rehearsals is very similar to my private lessons, and so there is always a component of vocal technique. Most importantly, I begin and end with the making of music, incorporating ideas of articulation, phrasing, dramatizing, joking, dancing--all to the end of allowing the intention and need to express and communicate to drive the mechanism, to engage the technique naturally.Step by step I try to demystify the art and technique of singing by analyzing, explaining, providing tools and strategies for breathing, voice production, support, focus; I often try to find similarities to other disciplines--playing a sport, dancing, martial arts, playing an instrument, painting--to make the experience more relevant, more personal and more familiar to the student.I constantly urge my students to better themselves, and equally constantly I assure them and encourage them. I strive to challenge more advanced singers and encourage beginners, always with patience and respect, empowering them towards a higher level of musical awareness, understanding, and competence. I take a creative approach to problem-solving; I am a "troubleshooter" and like to devise exercises to address particular and specific issues--tuning, voice production, blending, balance, tension release, rhythmic and ensemble problems.I have a strong sense of humor and I love to laugh, so humour is always an important component of my lessons. My students and I have a great time together, and the same is true for my choral rehearsals. First and foremost, I like to provide a safe place for singers to try new things, to allow themselves to be vulnerable, to feel free to experiment with their voices, to allow themselves to make mistakes, and even to not make a great sound at times, to find what is available to them in terms of color, range, dynamic and expressive capabilities in this amazing instrument that is the human voice.I have a boundless love for music and music-making and I have been told that my enthusiasm for music is contagious. I believe singing is a right and that all humans can, should--and must--sing. Its an absolute necessity for our well-being--emotional, spiritual, physical and intellectual.

I can also accommodate irregular schedules depending on my schedule and availability.Payment: All lessons must be paid in advance. Four lessons must be purchased on or before the forth lesson of a lesson cycle.CANCELLATIONNo-fault cancellation: If you cancel your lesson one week in advance and cannot reschedule, there will be no charge for the lesson. Due to my own performance and training schedule, I occasionally may have to reschedule a lesson. If an alternate time cannot be found, there will be no charge for the lesson.Short-notice cancellation: If you must cancel the week of your lesson, I will make every effort to reschedule that lesson. Dear Choral Director--As a singer you know how important it is that your choristers have some fundamental training on vocal technique. As a conductor I know how difficult it is to find the time during rehearsals to impart proper vocal technique to your singers. We both know as well that in the choral setting, distracted by reading the music, blending with our neighbours, tuning the chords, watching our diction, and following the conductor, we often lose awareness of our bodies and lose sight of the fundamentals of technique.A well-timed clinic can help awaken body awareness long ago forgotten, it can create a deeper understanding of the fundamentals and reinforce the importance of good vocal technique. It can bring to light spcific technical issues that singers may be facing and that prevent them from their best sound. These individual defficiencies at large become choral issues and hold the choir back from their true potential. My approach is wholistic and organic, based on the natural and proper structure of the singing apparatus and efficiency of the mechanism, tailored to the individual and their particular issues at the time. My first priority is to find tension and help release it, thereby freeing sound energy and achieving a more complete physical relaxation.
