Mission Statement of EverDear Maltese***My Goal is to produce dogs that are the model of the CKC standard of Excellence for the breed. First and foremost we breed for temperment. It is important, not only for the makings of a Great Champion, but also for obedience and a loving trusting companion***We are passionate and dedicated to producing what we call our, Marvellous Maltese companions that are true to the breed standard. Puppies range in size from very small to regular toys. Each puppy receives the correct veterinarian care with checkups, needles and microchips, and of course they are all lavished with love! Information For The First Time Toy Dog Owner...
HypoglycemiaBaby, toy breed puppies can develop a low blood sugar level due to playing too long, not eating, becoming too excited or because of injury and can become lethargic, sleepy, staggery, drool at the corners of the mouth and finally fall down and become rigid, often with the back arched and the head thrown back. At this point they will not respond to people. If the pup is not treated there is a strong possibility of death. If you feel you are not sure about correcting the hypoglycemia, take your pup to the vet immediately.So to help avoid the possibility of developing hypoglycemia ... for the first week give the puppy Nutri-Cal or Vet Solutions which is a paste that comes in a tube, twice a day to keep their sugar level up. You purchase these products from your veterinarian. Squeeze one half to one inch of the paste on the index finger and pry the mouth open using the thumb and the index finger of the other hand. Run the paste along the roof of the mouth and the pup will lick it back and swallow. In about twenty minutes the pup should start to come around and at this time Gator-Aid given slowly into the side of the mouth in the loose lip area with a syringe will also help. If you do not have Nutri-Cal or Vet Solutions at home you can dip your finger in corn syrup or honey and rub the gums.Recipe for a recovering hypoglycemic puppy-2 tbls Gerber Rice Cereal-2 tsp Gerber strained meat (chicken, beef, liver)-1 tsp corn syrup-Boiled liver water to make a liquid paste with the above ingredientsMix all of this together and put in baby eye dropper or syringe and squeeze between the teeth and the side lips. Give about 12 cc let swallow and repeat every four hours. Monitor their food intake until you are sure they are doing well on their own. Sometimes it is necessary to monitor the pup and its eating habits until it is six months old.This is how we differ from many, many breeders...We keep most of our pups until they are four months old and we have done all this worrying for you. ***Beware of anyone trying to sell you a Maltese pup before it is 14 weeks old.*** Many people swear by leaving Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy dry kibble and Eukanuba Weanig Diet out at all times. This is called 'free feeding'. We leave the puppies with food even at night time. RestJust like newborn infants, the young pup needs a regular nap time. Limit play time to intervals of 15 minutes and then have the puppy calm down. They often over play and exhaust themselves and fall asleep before they have eaten. TemperatureIf you have given your puppy a bath, do not let it get chilled. When a pup is cold, it will start to shiver. This eats up calories which lowers immunity making them become susceptible to stress related illnesses.Eye StainsThere are many causes for eye stain. All breeds of dogs have eye stain but it is most noticed on a pure white breed. It can be caused by heredity, overall health of the dog or environment. If you notice that your Maltese has an orange face there are other factors to consider. Teething, is often the cause of heavy staining. You will have to bear with this staining until the pup has reached about 8 months of age. At this time all of the teeth should have changed and the adult teeth are fully developed. The face should gradually lighten in the stained area. If your dog is older, have a vet check its teeth as build up on the teeth and tooth decay are also causes of eye stain. It is a good idea to have teeth scaled at least once a year. This delays gum infection and tooth decay. If you are planning on showing your dog, it is necessary to clean the corner of the eyes at least twice a day and place corn starch around the inside corner of the eye. This powder helps soak up the liquid that flows from the eye. Hair growing into the eye will also cause them to run and increase the amount of staining. If you cut the hair around the inside corner of the eye you will just prolong the problem as the new hair will grow straight up and into the eye again. If you are planning on growing a nice topknot, it should be combed in the morning and again in the evening. Styling gel can be used to keep all of the loose hair in place. Some Maltese develop eye irritation from pollen, pollution, dirt, and dust. A simple solution to help with this problem is to place Bausch Laumb eyewash into a little spray bottle and spritz it just above the eyes and on the hair under the eyes in the morning and again at night. There is boric acid in this solution and that in itself kills bacteria that causes eye stains. It is also a good idea to give your Maltese either filtered or bottled water. Other reasons for staining might be: allergies, a low grade bacterial infection, food dyes, tear duct formation, ear mites, or ear infections. There are those that believe, if you boil liver in water, dice it into small pieces and mash it to a paste, when fed once or twice a week will aid in the reduction of eye stain. Those of us that have loved and owned Maltese have pondered long and hard over the eye stain situation. No matter what we do we notice that some dogs have very little eye stains and others seem to have it on and off all of their lives. Instead of stressing over this I tend to accept the little dogs the way they are, and love every little hair. Remember all dogs have eye stains, we just tend to worry more about it on Maltese. A Safe PlaceIf you have a play pen, you have the perfect place for your new pup. I put a plastic table cloth on the bottom, I then place a little bed and food dish on the floor and then on the far side a pee pad that is taped down with masking tape. Over the top for nap time, I spread a regular sized blanket. This makes the area nice and dark for nap time. When the pup is young you will have to block off various areas of your home, after all we don't want a pup falling down stairs etc. Pieces of cardboard taped to door frames with masking tape will work for awhile. However, you may have to invest in a baby gate or two. If you can train your pup to drink from a water bottle, the face will be less stained and whatever you do don't let them lick a spagetti plate....that will not wash out of their face hairs! It is always a good idea to leave the radio on or the TV when you go out so that they will not feel too alone. How to calculate your Maltese weightWeight charts help gage a puppies weight as it matures into an adult Maltese, however it should be used as a guideline only....Rule of thumb is to triple the weight of an 8 week old maltese puppy or to double the weight at 12 weeks of age (3mnths).1. Weigh your Maltese puppy and then convert that weight into ounces. Remember, 1 lb = 16 oz Example: 2 lbs 2oz. = (2 x 16) +2 oz = 34 oz.2. Find your Maltese Age on the left hand column, age must be in weeks.3. Next, move to the right of the chart horizontally until you find your puppies current weight in ounces that you have calculated.4. Last, scroll down to the very bottom of the chart following your coloum all the way down to see your maltese full grown weight in lbs.... Some say this ancient breed originated on the island of Malta (off the southern coast of Italy), and hence its name. This island was known to have a variety of small breeds of dogs living there since early times. Malta was colonised by the Phoenicians about 1500 B.C., but other Mediterranean races lived there as early as 3500 B.C. Perhaps these elegant little dogs were imported to the area by the Phoenicians who also traveled with them to other ports in the world in their global trading. Malta, and the advanced civilization that prospered there, was heralded for its wealth and culture; it is believed that it is in this atmosphere of refinement and opulence that the tiny Maltese emerged. Tracing the exact origins of the Maltese is almost impossible. There are other theories that suggest the dog never set paw on the island of Malta during this time period. Whichever version you believe to be accurate, the Maltese still is credited as one of the oldest breeds in existence. The beloved Maltese has inspired poetry, art and sculpture, usually at the request of devoted owners and patrons of the arts. At the time of the Apostle Paul, Issa, the Maltese owned by the Roman Governor of Malta in the first century, received this most moving of poetic tribute: "Issa is more frolicsome than Catulla's sparrow. Issa is purer than a dove's kiss. Issa is gentler than a maiden, Issa is more precious than Indian gems....Lest the last days that she sees light should snatch her from him forever, Publius has had her picture painted." The Greeks erected tombs to their Maltese, and from the 5th century on, Greek ceramic art shows innumerable paintings of these dogs. Statues of similar dogs have been found in Egyptian tombs in the 13th century B.C. It's quite possible that this was the kind of dog worshipped by the Egyptians. It is believed the tiny Maltese arrived in Great Britain with the invasion of the Roman legions as early as 55 B.C. They were certainly popular by the reign of Henry V111 (1509-1547). The dogs were bred as companions and "comforters." They were especially favoured by elegant ladies who carried them in the sleeves of their dresses as they strolled the garden paths of their estates. At rest, these pleasant canine companions most often were found curled contentedly in their mistresses' laps acting like, hot water bottles of today. The best modern strain of the Maltese is traced to the kennels of Mr. R. Mandeville of London. From 1860 to 1870, he practically swept the board at British dog shows with his dogs Fido and Lilly, distant ancestors of the Maltese enjoyed today. The Maltese's reign in America began in 1875. The breed made its debut at the Westminster Kennel Club's first show in 1877 and officially was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888. For many centuries, the Maltese has been petted and prized by people of culture, wealth and refinement. Weather in the ring or at home with the family, this breed of dog is loved for its intelligence, spark and fidelity. Maltese are devoted to their owners, but friendly to others. Thriving on attention, these bright dogs are patient and easily trained, They are healthy, spirited and sturdy, despite their diminutive size. The Maltese is also an excellent watchdog for people with hearing disabilities or for those who live in apartments or condominiums. Although, the Maltese is admired for its long white hair, it has no undercoat, so it does not create shedding problems. However, potential owners should know that this toy breed is a "high-maintenance" pet. Maintaining the dog's glamorous coat requires frequent brushing to prevent tangling. Regular shampooing and conditioning are recommended. However, because the Maltese is a toy breed its maintenance is not overwhelming, as it is easy to scoop up, wash in the kitchen sink and air or blow dry. Like a small child, of course, it needs a comb run through its hair once a day, followed by lots of praise and hugs and kisses. EverDear Retired Maltese There are times when I have adults available to be placed in pet homes. These are Maltese who have been retired from showing or breeding. These dogs go to their new homes for the cost of spaying/neutering, teeth cleaning and updated needles if necessary. Shipping/pickup is paid by the new owner. It takes these dogs about two weeks to adjust to their new homes. If you just do not want to go through the training of a young puppy then one of these mature Maltese is for you.
