The idea for OpenDecisions.Org popped up when my M.Sc. Thesis student Alp Eren Akçay and I were working on an applied project for JohnsonDiversey Turkey (JDT) in late 2007. Our project at the company's Gebze, Kocaeli plant involved solving a simple scheduling problem at a chemical mixer. To be specific, the problem was to minimize the "cost of setups" (the amount of water consumed for washing the mixer between product changeovers) in a "sequence-dependent setup cost" setting. In our JDT project we realized that it was very hard to find source code for high quality, working decision support software applications. Thus we decided to open up the source code of our software on the Internet free of charge so that environmental operations research applications will be facilitated throughout the world. Our goal is to extend our work with other decision support software, and to make their source codes and documentation easily available and accessible to practitioners and researcher from diverse backgrounds, including industrial engineering, computer science, chemical engineering, and others.
