Prom is a dance held once a year in American high schools. This dance is traditionally for high school juniors and seniors. Before the dance, students get together and vote for the Prom King and Prom Queen. The Queen and King are crowned at the dance and share a first dance together.
The purpose of prom is to have fun, spend time with your friends, to dress up, and DANCE!
At prom, you will take a ton of pictures, listen to American music, and maybe even slow dance with your date.
While at American proms it is customary to bring a date of the opposite sex, it's also equally ok to bring a group of friends.
American teens usually like to arrive in style by renting a nice car or a limo. They and their dates will generally meet before the dance to take pictures of their clothes.
Girls wear long, formal dresses with high heels.
Guys wear a tuxedo and dress shoes.
It is customary for the boy to buy a corsage for the girl (see the Gallery for a picture).
