As the shelling ripped along the muddied trenches shredding the earth, tearing upon the land in a relentless fury. As explosions shook the air and fought against the cold breeze that brushed icy fingers against soldiers faces.
As mud flew into the smoky, wet, cold air. As the rats scuttled across the fields of mud, rain and blood. As the bodies of men scattered the fields of Flanders, the bodies of men known remembered, loved, and forgotten.
As the wives, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers wept their sodden eyes on to saturated handkerchiefs. As friends acted tough and wiped away tears.
The sun rose on the distant horizon, as the sweet wind blew across the poppies and crosses. The Bugle call rang out signifying the dawn of a new day.

The old grey lighthouse stood upon the hill, menacingly glaring at us as we drove closer towards it. The heavy raindrops slid across our windscreen, making it difficult to see the gloomy lighthouse. A flash of lightning suddenly struck behind it, making me jump in terror. The lighthouse looked like it was swaying in the strong gusts of wind; its dark shadow looming over mum and I.
The lighthouse belonged to my father, who usually worked there until midnight each night before returning home. However, he had not come home for two nights in a row. So, now we’re driving out to the notoriously haunted lighthouse to find him.
We stepped out of the car and were completely drenched. As we stumbled towards the entrance a glimpse of white in the window above caught my eye, but when I looked there was nothing. I felt a shiver run up my spine and breathed deeply to calm my nerves.
Carefully I reached out a slightly shaking arm and pushed open the door. Before I could scream, hundreds of black screeching bats gushed out of darkness thrusting mum and I onto the cold, stony ground.
We lay trapped on the hard concrete, petrified, because directly above, in the watch room was a dark and obscure figure. Its wicked glare was too intense for me so I shut my eyes tightly. “It must be an illusion.” I thought to myself. But no; when I opened them I could make out what seemed to be dad sitting beside the figure, faintly calling out to us, his soft brown eyes pleading us to help him.
As mum and I both realised it ‘was’ him, we jumped to our feet instantly. Smashing down the wooden door, we rushed up what seemed like millions of stairs to the watch room.
However, we were stopped suddenly at the top of the stairs, with faces like we'd just seen a ghost. We actually had seen a ghost and it was standing before us. Its cold eyes staring at us as if trying to tell us something. Whispered words came from its mouth.
"Do not enter the watch room". But we had to save dad!
I pushed past the small ghost boy and came to the watch room door. The door flung open automatically and I came face to face with the black figure, which close up was a troubled middle-aged man. Dad, tied to a chair in a corner, was screaming out to me. I prepared to attack, but mum came out from behind and stopped me. The figure brought out a long wooden stick threatening to hit me.
The small ghost suddenly appeared out of no-where and began spinning, faster and faster around the man until it was a blur. He collapsed helplessly.
Hours later, everyone was packed into our car, driving home. We had promised we'd never see that lighthouse again. Anyway, who would want to be around a haunted lighthouse?

A couple of months ago, The United States of America held the US Open for tennis.
The U.S Open is an annual tennis event held in the USA. It is one of the four biggest tennis events in the world along with the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. This year’s U.S Open was extremely tough for all of the players, as it is every year. Once again, there were all the big names including Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
However, this year we had quite a bit of luck with our very own Aussie, Sam Stosur, who ended up winning the women’s event! She played off against Serena Williams in the Final and to nobody’s surprise, the crowd was supporting Serena, seeing as she was representing the USA but Aussie Sam pushed on through, despite the disadvantages of Serena’s crowd support.
Stosur, having come out victorious in one of the most exciting games of tennis ever, received a tremendous reception when she arrived back in Australia and some people believe that she may be following the steps of Margaret Court. Australia might have a new Tennis Champion on the way.
