"Around 20,000 Second Hand English Language books in stock, as well as German, French and many other languages. Great variety of non fiction as well as all the classics. New independent comics from Berlin and all other new titles are available to order. Reading room in the back, check listings press for special events, or take yourself up there to drink tea, meet fellow sociable bookworms and spend an hour or so browsing around. " - City Spy
"In the former communist workers district of Friedrichschain now dominated by bars, night clubs and cafes, East of Eden specializes in biographies, music books and antiquarian collectors items. The shop is located in a century-old house restituted by the German government to a Philadelphia doctor after World War II. The current tenants of the building help run the shop, which hosts regular performances by English-speaking musicians, comedians and even magicians." - New York Times
"This independent second hand bookstore was basically a 2001 Christmas gift to all the residents of former East Berlin, and it has quickly established itself as one of the best destinations for English titles in the competitive English language bookstore scene in Berlin. Owned by two Brits, Mark Mulholland and Alan Garvie, the East of Eden International Bookshop, as its full name goes, is like a small labyrinth, with five interconnected rooms equipped with comfortable seats and a sofa for the customers to enjoy.
Most importantly, the whole space is jammed with books, which are stored all around the place. The offer of this second hand bookstore is very wide, and you can find anything from cheap paperbacks, to rare out-of-print leather bound editions for collectors and bibliophiles. As you can imagine, due to this ambitious scope, the prices also vary within a rather wide range, but the paperback section is generally very accessible. The vast majority of books in East of Eden is available in English language, but there are also separate German and French sections.
Besides their common obsession with books, the two owners also share a passion for folk music. East of Eden is thus a well-known spot of the local folk music scene, as it holds gigs on regular basis. The back room is reserved for these musical evenings, which are characterized by a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Book readings also take place in the same space." Bookstoreguide.org
"If you're looking for used English books, or for open poetry nights, stop by East of Eden, which really isn't too far east and really is smack in the middle of Eden. I'm fond of the street that it's on by the way: Schreinerstraße is colorful but human, and the people that work at East of Eden are friendly and all look like moonlighting musicians, which they probably are. Nobody's going to look down on you if you buy something trashy (which is more than I can say about some other bookstores). The sofas are mighty inviting too." - virtualtourist.com
"A book shop of its own kind. Small. Independent. International. SPECIAL.
Enter this cozy shop and feel comfy straight away. Old couches and old book shelfs make you wanna spend hours in there. The friendly and English speaking shop assistant is always happy to help you; friends and neighbors from the area come by for a little chat. For me it has the sort of atmosphere that you usually find in little shops in villages traditionally run by families; but here you are in a big city!" - spottedbylocals.com
