Genesis School of the Arts
Beginning.
Most of the children and youth of Copán Ruinas, Honduras have not even begun to experience the world of the arts. Most have never painted on canvas or played a guitar, have never danced and have never even thought of acting in a play. Genesis is a school of the arts that provides a platform for local artists to share the gift of art with children and youth who have never experienced it.
Honduras is a third world country with absolutely no government funding for artistic education. Genesis strives to fill this vital gap left in children's lives by offering FREE classes in music, dance, cooking, drama, and visual arts. Genesis is funded completely by donations: when you give to the school, you are directly engaged in making art accessible in the lives of children.
The Genesis School also strives to build community, by providing employment for talented artistic Hondurans who lack other opportunities to utilize their abilities in such a productive way.
The Genesis Team
Duane Forrest- Duane is a singer and songwriter originally from Toronto, Canada whose passion for the arts and belief in their importance in the lives of children inspired him to found the Genesis School.
Artists- International interns and local Honduran artists give their time, energy and heart by teaching and mentoring children and youth using their specific artistic talents.
Samantha Post- As volunteer program coordinator, Samantha blends her academic background as an International Development student at York University with her practical experience teaching theatre at the International Rescue Committee in New York City.
The Need
Money, instruments & you.
We need monthly and one-time donors to pay the rent of our building and to buy supplies for the children.
We are also inviting donations of musical instruments such as guitars, keyboard, and woodwind instruments (no recorders please).
Finally, Genesis has a team that includes both Honduran teachers and international interns. We are seeking talented artists who wish to share their gift with the children, youth, and community of Copan. During this internship, you would live in one of our intern homes while teaching and experiencing Honduran culture.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 in order to keep the Genesis School of the Arts open. Follow the link below to make a tax-deductible donation.
