How is Acupuncture different from Western medicine?
We can best answer this question by explaining the basic framework of both forms of medicine. The main form of medicine in the United States is known as Western medicine. Western medicine relies on the belief that disease is a defect within the human body or a destructive process caused by a specific outside pathogen. In the US, medical doctors use reductionism to employ diagnostic tools, find the disease-causing invader, control symptoms and cure the disease. There are three main components of treatment available within Western medicine: pharmaceuticals, surgery and therapy (physical therapy, psychiatric therapy, orthotics, speech therapy, etc.).
Acupuncture is the main part of another form of medicine called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM looks at multiple symptoms and their pattern of illness specific to the individual and delineates their cause from a combination of negative imbalances within the lifestyle, psyche, and effects of environmental stress, trauma or invasion by external pathogens. TCM utilizes a holistic approach to medicine and does not try to find one exact reason for illness; rather, it acknowledges that there are several factors that contribute to problems arising in the physical body. There are five main components of treatment available within TCM: acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, tui na (similar to massage), Tai Ji/Qi Gong (movement and stretching exercises) and nutrition.
Western medicine evolved in Europe and relies on clinical research to show an exact link between cause of disease and its clinical manifestations. This leads to specific diagnostic tests and then treatments to understand and affect the human body, with vocabulary focusing on genetics and biochemistry. Traditional Chinese medicine evolved in China and relies on human trials that have taken place over thousands of years to validate effectiveness. Because results were based on human experience and not laboratory data, a different vocabulary developed to explain how energy (qi) and blood travel through the body in certain pathways (meridians) and can get obstructed by trauma, emotions, environmental factors and lifestyle choices. It is also worth noting that because TCM is a science that has been perfected through its use on humans, the number of practitioner caused deaths or even negative side-effects is virtually non-existent.
One type of medicine is not superior to the other. They comprise the two main forms of medicine practiced in the world today. Because Western medicine is the primary form of medicine in this country, TCM is considered an alternative form of medicine and is used as a complementary approach to that of Western medicine. We hope this website serves to illustrate that TCM, when applied through acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, can be used as a successful choice for restoring and maintaining optimal health.

Treating Pain
Acupuncture is best known for its ability to successfully treat pain. Pain itself is not a diagnosis, but rather an indication or warning that there is a problem somewhere in the body. Many times the exact location of pain points to where the problem is, as in the case of elbow pain above an inflamed tendon. But in other situations the site of pain may be related to problems far away, as in leg pain resulting from a herniated disk pushing on a nerve in the back.
The intensity of the pain usually indicates or warns how severe the problem is. Each person has a different pain threshold, but pain levels that increase or do not lessen over time point to something that needs attention.
And the circumstances surrounding the onset of the pain are just as important. Was there an accident or incident? Or did the pain gradually develop over a course of time or during a certain period of life?
The characteristics of pain give important information about what is causing the body to send this signal. Once noticed, it is important to address the underlying problem that forced the body to send a pain message, not just turn down the discomfort. Otherwise the body will send out other warning signals until the core problem is corrected.
How does acupuncture stop pain?
There are many therapies that attempt to stop pain. Most of them mask the pain while hoping the body is able to heal itself or push the body to heal faster while offering limited pain relief. Acupuncture is an extremely powerful and effective approach to treat pain because it decreases pain levels as it stimulates the body’s healing response. Acupuncture resolves pain by affecting several pain pathways and healing responses at the same time:
• raise endorphin levels and diminish the nervous system’s pain response
• decrease inflammation and swelling
• relax muscles and stop spasms
• increase circulation to the local area
How many treatments will I need?
This varies considerably based on the specific condition being treated. Each person receives an individualized treatment plan based on age, past medical history, lifestyle, treatment goals and current pain status. Generally speaking however, acute pain (less than 3 months duration) is often resolved in a short series of treatments spaced close together and chronic pain requires consistent regular treatment to achieve long-term pain relief.
How else will acupuncture help me deal with my pain?
Almost every person finds acupuncture treatments to be very relaxing. Many do not expect this effect, especially dealing with painful conditions, but acupuncture balances various parts of the body together. This results in a person feeling calm, peaceful and very relaxed. Pain is stressful and can wear someone down causing irritability, tension and insomnia. By relaxing the whole person, acupuncture also helps eliminate these other negative aspects of pain. And it does so in a natural way, with no negative side effects.
Acupuncture also looks at the entire person, not just the one part that hurts. This means an acupuncturist will offer suggestions for individual lifestyle improvements regarding exercise, supplements and diet, sleeping and stress management techniques to help a person improve health and decrease pain.
Cancer, Chemotherapy and Chinese Medicine
Incidences of cancer are well documented throughout the history of Chinese medicine. Drawings and descriptions of tumors have appeared in some of the most ancient Chinese medical writings. Yet “cancer” itself is not a term used in Chinese Medicine. This is because Chinese medicine regards cancer as a composite of several different conditions, rather than a single disease. Because of its holistic nature, Chinese medicine looks at all of the factors that may have contributed to the development of the disease in the person diagnosed with cancer. Family history, life-long exposure to toxins, the overall strength of the immune system, digestive system and emotional well-being inform acupuncturists about the various factors that contributed to the formation of the disease in the first place and how to help patients overcome them.
Chinese medicine alone should not be considered a miracle treatment for cancer. Many patients seek alternative methods of treatment in the hope of finding a cure. Instead, Chinese medicine helps to support the body’s natural immunity, its innate strength and homeostatic capabilities, while regenerating and repairing the damage done by the cancer itself. It is also an extremely valuable adjunct therapy to chemotherapy and radiation. Many patients seek out acupuncture and Chinese medicine because they are familiar with its ability to help post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting, fatigue, constipation and many other side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
Currently, acupuncture is being recommended as a complimentary therapy in several cancer hospitals and centers around the U.S. If you are considering using acupuncture during chemotherapy or radiation, the information on this site will help you understand how acupuncture works in conjunction with conventional cancer treatment and how best to use acupuncture to optimize your health both during and after chemotherapy.
What are Chinese Herbs, and how are they different from other Herbs?
In addition to Acupuncture, one of the modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine is Herbal Medicine. Herbs are a nice complement to your acupuncture treatments, and by utilizing both, you can speed your healing process. Here are a few common questions and answers about Chinese herbs:
Chinese herbs are not just from China. In fact, many grow right here in th US. You may even have some in your yard and not know it! Many commonly used Western herbs, like cinnamon bark, fennel or dandelion root, for example, are used in Chinese herbology. The difference lies in the way they are prescribed and used. A Chinese herb is a substance (many include foods, minerals, shells, besides plants) that is prescribed based on its temperature, taste, where it acts in the body, and its principle action according to Chinese medical diagnosis. The herbs can also be looked at from a scientific perspective, such as whether its qualities are antibiotic, immune enhancing, laxative, analgesic, etc.
Chinese herbs are rarely taken individually. Formulas are constructed with anywhere from 2 to 20 different herbs, each having its own function. The herbs work synergistically to increase effectiveness. When prescribing herbs in granular/powder or whole raw form, the practitioner can customize the formula for each individual. For example, a formula might be prescribed for a complaint of shoulder pain. But, if you are experiencing insomnia and stress as well, the base formula would address the shoulder pain and be modified to address the other complaints as well.
How are Chinese Herbs taken?
Chinese herbal formulas can be taken in several different forms. Pills, liquid tinctures (an herbal extract in an alcohol base), granular powder form, and whole raw herb teas that you boil down to a decoction. Whole herbs are the strongest and most effective. However, pills, tinctures and granular formulas are convenient and easy to take.
Are Chinese Herbs safe?
When prescribed by a licensed practitioner, Chinese herbs are safe. Herbs are powerful medicine and therefore do have side effects when used improperly, which is why you should not self-prescribe even though many herbs are sold over the counter. Only a small percentage of acupuncturists in the state of California are educated extensively in Chinese herbal medicine. So when consulting a practitioner, ask if they have specific training in both.
The herbal companies we at TopLine Wellness purchase from are reputable companies that do extensive testing for heavy metals, pesticides and other toxins for safety and quality.
Nutritional Supplements
In addition to Chinese medicinals we are use high quality professional supplements. We hand pick the best quality of vitamins and nutricueticals. Because no single company provides the vest of everything, we carry a selective yet wide range of supplements to work in conjunction with Chinese medical principles as western nutrition perspectives.
Often we find that people are taking too many supplements and for an extended time period. Most supplements should only be taken until the deficiency is replaced. Whole foods are a much better long term source for nutrition while short periods of supplements serves to give the body a boost. Additionally, taking too many supplements burdens the body and is a waste of money. We can assess your individual need for supplements and create a regimen that gives you maximum benefit and minimum expense.

Sondra St. Clair provides all the services at TopLine Wellness. Since 1987, her private practice has helped thousands of people regain function, health and the fullness and joy of life.
Sondra was brought into the field of Chinese medicine through her own personal journey. Being a child who enjoyed nature, she hiked in the hills where she grew up daily. One day, while scaling a cliff she fell into a ravine where she suffered a back injury. The pain would come and go but after a few years, the pain was so excruciating and unrelenting that she was unable to sit , stand or lay down, at the ripe old age of 17. Unable to tolerate medication and afraid of surgery, Sondra sought another alternative. At that time, acupuncture was brand new to the US but she was able to find an acupuncturist. Her pain was completely gone in a few treatments. This was the first encounter.
Continuing her collegiate studies in Biology and Botany, in particular the medicinal used of plants, she had another encounter with Chinese medicine. While attending medical school, a nurse and friend told her of a man in the hospital in a coma who had been awakened with a single acupunture needle - her second encounter.
She finally got the message and decided to study Chinese medicine sincerely. With formal training in the US and time in China, Dr. St. Clair opened private practice in 1987. But her training never ends. Over the decades she has trained with veterinarians, orthopedists, psychologists and has gathered numerous techniques to enhance ther Chinese medical tool box.
She continues to be passionate about helping people be able to physically do what they love, be it a sport , gardening, cooking, spending quality time with family or just feel better and happier by being pain free.
You too can be one of the many who is able to enjoy once again, and participate in the passion of live.
