Three Little Words Make a Big ImpactOur model of social change involves three steps: Awareness, Alternatives, and Action. There are several ways you can help Be The Shift causes or start a shift in your own community. A shift could be a transfer in the balance of power, a different way of addressing common or reoccuring issues, or even a change in the way neighbors communicate with one another. No shift is too small, nor too big. As long as we work together, communities can make great strides.AwarenessAction begins with awareness. Educating yourself on current issues in your community and around the world is the first step towards creating any shift. Follow Be The Shift on Facebook and Twitter to keep up on current issues. Our Resource Room contains links, videos, articles, and other media content that promotes awareness of issues we're faced with today and the root causes of those issues. Water scarcity, pollution, public health and nutrition, and land rights are just some of the issues we highlight. Browse through our links and content and begin your journey towards social responsibility. AlternativesOnce you've uncovered knowledge about issues that affect your life, your community, your country, or the world over, you can begin to consider alternative solutions. For example, you might consider rallying your neighbors together to create a volunteer-based foot patrol to reduce crime like some neighbors did in Portland, Oregon, or you might try to re-route your gutters to store rainwater for garden watering next Spring. You might also wish to simply support an alternative that has been developed already. If you need help or inspiration in your search for solutions, or you'd like to support an existing alternative, visit the Resource Room to find useful links, books, and videos.ActionNow you're knowledgable about the issue, you've created or discovered an alternative solution that is sustainable and just, and you're ready to take action! Action is a multi-faceted word. Actions range from signing a petition to joining a protest to lobbying Capitol Hill. We encourage all shifters to spend some time, at least once a month, volunteering for the charity of their choice. Below is a list of more specific ways to take action and be the shift in your community:1. Volunteer your time2. Write a letter to congress3. Write a letter to an editor4. Create / sign a petition to support a cause5. Donate to a cause6. Share your actions with friends 7. Share information via social networks8. Spread the word!9. Join a non violent rally / protest10. Give support to other shiftersRemember, human beings are social mimics - we naturally copy the actions of those around us. Make sure your actions are inspirational in a good way.

Be The Shift continues to support the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe through their recovery after the crisis of 2010. Here are some facts:~February 1st, 2010 Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe has declared state of emergency after severe ice storm devastates reservation~Storm topples more than 3000 power poles~13,000 people without power, heat and water~Power outages forced 35 kidney dialysis patients from the tribe to temporary relocate to Rapid City~Tribal representatives are turning attention to raising awareness about the reservation's damaged water infrastructure.Tens of thousands of Shifters have already signed our petition to congress to support the tribe's infrastructure, and we're keeping it open as long as congress continues to neglect the tribe's recovery and progress. This isn't a Native American issue. These are Americans, and the government has ignored them for far too long. Take a few minutes to read and sign the petition to congress here. Here's what signers of the petition are saying:"It's long time the federal government abide by the agreements made with native peoples, whether old or new. How our government treats its own people is as good a measure of its integrity and human rights record as how it impacts the world community. Do the right thing just because it is right." ~ Kathy K. from Laramie, WY"No persons should suffer any indignity of this level. It is a travesty of vast proportions that should illicit same in those who have never had the want of anything." ~Briana O. from Fort Collins, CO"Water is life - and a human right. Let there be money for life - not war and death - and let the people, animals, plants and our Mother Earth flourish again..." ~Judith I. from Santa Rosa, CA"What is the time scale on a promise? The Sioux Nation have already had to endure this situation for 30 years..... the US Government made a promise 30 years ago to allocate funds to resolve this situation and yet the The Sioux Nation are still suffering each and every day, take a stand and take it today!" ~ Ann T.Sign the petition now!You can find more related news, videos, and articles HERE.
