Gifts for a Local Boys and Girls Club

After fundraising around $500, the sisters decided to purchase needed supplies for Boys and Girls Club rather than the usual donated check. With the money, the sisters bought tennis rackets, soccer balls, soccer goals, jump ropes, school supplies, and even Christmas gifts for a local Boys and Girls Club in Athens.

Herstory [Her]Story Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Incorporated was nationally founded by 17 dedicated women on December 6, 1998 at the University of Houston on the basis of advancement for South Asian women. They created the backbone of the sorority on the five pillars of Sisterhood, Respect, Loyalty, Honesty and Friendship. Today, the sorority is the strongest, largest, fastest growing South Asian Sorority with over a thousand members and counting.In December 2007, the notion was set forth of starting a new South Asian sisterhood at the University of Georgia. After a year of dedication, perseverance, and patience, the interest group was established at the University of Georgia. The Fortitude Founding Mothers established a foundation to voice South Asian concerns and become actively involved with the Greek community. They not only felt compelled to aid their community, but also to self explore and initiate the start of an everlasting sisterhood. How little these women knew that they would pave the way of a new era and legacy. The five founding mothers of the Georgia Colony were warmly welcomed into the Delta Phi Omega family on July 14, 2009. With the hard work and Greek support on campus, they became recognized by the Multicultural Greek Council at the University of Georgia on October 5, 2010. Today, the University of Georgia Colony stands five lines and thirty-one members strong, each sister embodying the ideals of leadership, service, academics, and sisterhood. The colony demonstrates and continues the national legacy of being the strongest, largest, and fastest-growing sorority of its kind.

She has played soccer since she was five years old, and soccer has always been a big part of her life. Other hobbies include cooking and art. She joined Delta Phi Omega in Spring 2011 and certainly exemplifies the values of this sorority."Delta Phi Omega is more than just a sorority to me. I can honestly say that I love every single one of my sisters and know that I can count on them for anything. The connection between sisters not only at this colony, but worldwide, is something that is rare to experience. Also, academics is my top priority, and I believe education is the key to success. I am currently this colony's Academic Chair because I hope to push all my sisters to exceed in their chosen fields. Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc.'s national philanthropy focuses on children's education and literacy. We are staunch in our beliefs that the children of today are the leaders of tomorrow. By ensuring that each child receives a quality education and has the ability to read and write, Delta Phi Omega enables each child to harness his or her potential and take strides towards changing the future. Our efforts in our philanthropy are most visible in our annual Literacy Through Unity week, a national initiative which has raised close to $25,000 for children's education and literacy. The sisters of Delta Phi Omega hope to reach beyond the community at their university by remaining connected to the world around them and proactive in the endless efforts towards global human progress. Progress towards this great goal begins with the neighboring citizens and students of Athens-Clarke County, the 5th poorest county in the nation, and extends beyond this nation's borders into the slums of India. The UGA Colony of Delta Phi Omega hopes to rid the distinction of illiteracy in certain impoverished locals by improving the lives of the youth to better the future.

Myth 1: Sorority Girls = Party GirlsThe perception that women in sororities are party girls is outdated and incorrect. Yes, we do have fun, but we do so in a manner that separates our personal enjoyment from our professional affiliation with DPO. Delta Phi Omega is a non-profit organization dedicated to provide its members with the skills, experience and networks they need to succeed in their lives. Our activities are conducted in a professional setting with a strong focus on service projects, cultural awareness, and fundraising for our philanthropic cause of children's education and literacy.Myth 2: Sorority members lack individualityAnother misconception about sororities is that our sisters are "clones" of each other, that we lack individuality. This could not be further from the truth. Sisters of Delta Phi Omega come from a variety of backgrounds and join for a variety of reasons. The diverse personalities allow us to learn about respect and teamwork. Just as with other organizations, our sisters share common goals for service, cultural understanding, leadership or all three. We often say, "Indivdually Unique, Together Complete."Myth 3: Girls in sororities lack self-esteemOf all the stereotypes sororities face, the most offensive is the accusation that we are just a group of promiscuous girls with low self-esteem looking for an identity and group to conform to. Wrong. We are a group of ambitious, well-adjusted women looking for a way to contribute to our community, acquire useful experiences, and gain personal growth all while building lasting, beneficial relationships with women who truly want to see you achieve your best.Myth 4: Joining a Sorority means I am paying for friends.Social opportunities, philanthropic projects, community service, tradition, career networking, and becoming part of an international organization are all reasons mentioned for becoming part of the Greek community, but the one cited most often by members is the sense of brotherhood/sisterhood. After all, you don't have to join a fraternity or sorority to have a great social life in the University. You don't have to pay dues to a Greek letter organization to volunteer or raise money for a cause. You don't have to belong to the Greek community to acquire the personal development and study skills to succeed at the University. The element of brotherhood/sisterhood is nonetheless a difficult attribute to convey to men and women interested in joining the Greek system, one which is not defined by any monetary amount. It is a feeling of togetherness, support, and teamwork. It is companionship, personal discovery, challenge, and awareness.Joining a Greek organization is one way to make UGA seem smaller, friendlier, and easier to cope away from home. It gives you a place and people to count on. Fraternities and sororities endeavor to enhance your educational experience by emphasizing intellectual, interpersonal, and social development. The ideals of lifelong friendship, sound education, campus and community service, and social interaction are what Greeks strive to live by every day.Myth 5: There are certain 'types' for which sororities recruit.There is no fraternity or sorority "type". One of the strengths of the University of Georgias Greek system is the diversity of the individuals who are associated with it. Each fraternity and sorority, no matter how large or small in number, consists of members who have varied interests and backgrounds.Myth 6: Sororities are all about drinking.The social aspect of Greek life is one of the many reasons that students get involved in fraternities and sororities; however, alcohol and substance abuse is not tolerated. Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. has mandatory educational sessions on the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse, and precautions are taken at events to ensure a safe environment. We proactively host social events in which alcohol is prohibited.
How do I join?We hold informational sessions in both Fall and Spring semesters.This informational session is surrounded by various recruitment events so that we can get to know each other better and you can see if DPO is the right fit for you. After submitting an application, there will be an interview. If you receive a bid, you begin the new member education process. What is the New Member Process?Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc., like most other Greek organizations, require their members to complete a probationary period, usually called "new member education" prior to initiation for the purpose of orientation and member development. During this time you'll learn the history, traditions and operating procedures of the organization and participate in activities to get to know the members better. The duration of the new member period varies from group to group depending on each persons respective time to learn the sorority's ideals.How much time does fraternity or sorority membership require?Like most other worthwhile extra-curricular activities, how much you get out of your Greek membership is related to how much you put in. On average, expect to contribute two to four hours per week for meetings and mandatory activities. Optional activities such as holding an office, attending social events, or helping out with various projects will of course take additional time. Whether it is planning a party, a community service project, or regular weekly meetings, members of Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. have learned to manage their time wisely with other commitments like homework, relationships, and jobs. Be sure to ask questions regarding time commitments during recruitment week!Generally, new members undergoing the New Member Education Process will have a larger time commitment simply for the fact that they are still learning the ideals and principles of the sorority. However, this is estimated to be the equivalent of one science class plus lab. The time commitment seems heavy, but it is achievable with ever-lasting memories for years to come.Is there a minimum GPA requirement?Many sororities follow the guidelines set by their national organizations when deciding to offer invitations and bids. It is also important to note that very few grade exceptions are made by each chapter. Potential members who do not meet a chapter's academic requirements are released early in the recruitment process to allow them the opportunity to explore other alternatives and allow their grades to increase. However, grades are considered throughout the entire process. For the University of Georgia Colony, we wish for all girls interested in joining to have at least a 2.75 GPA. If you have any further questions or do not meet this requirement, please contact the Recruitment Team and they will discuss this in further detail to ensure you fully consider all options.Will Greek membership affect my grades?Academic achievement is a priority for all Greek organizations. We strictly enforce grade point average requirements and offer study sessions, tutoring, and other programs to assist members to achieve their potential. Since our colony is composed of women from different years, various majors, and diverse interests, you can always find older members who have already completed the courses you are taking and therefore can offer advice on content and testing.Students who take advantage of the academic opportunities available and properly balance their time between academic and extra-curricular pursuits will find that Greek membership will enhance their academic performance. Several studies have consistently found that fraternity and sorority members tend to be significantly more likely to graduate from their program and report more satisfaction with their university experience than for unaffiliated students.How expensive is it to join DPO?Not expensive! While many sororities with houses have dues around $3000, DPO dues are far less than this. We aim to keep dues around $150 a semester. These dues cover the costs of national expenses, insurance and hosting events. We rely heavily on fundraising to cover other expenses and to raise funds for various charities. Do I have to be South Asian to join?No. While Delta Phi Omega is a South Asian interest organization, it is open to women of all backgrounds. We have sisters of all races and ethnicities and encourage any woman to join.What is hazing and is it permitted at UGA?Hazing is defined as any action taken which produces bodily harm or danger, mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, fright, or ridicule. All national fraternal organizations and institutions of higher education have banned hazing. The University of Georgia and the Greek Councils rigorously enforce hazing policies, and organizations that violate them are subject to immediate suspension of campus and Greek Council recognition and privileges. The Rituals of Greek organizations have nothing to do with hazing; they are not scary, shameful, or degrading. Although rituals are an important part of membership, it is nothing more than symbols, heraldry, and common ideals. Nationally, Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. has a strict non-hazing policy.What sort of leadership opportunities does Greek life provide?Fraternities and sororities exemplify democracy in action. They are families, communities, and some are legal corporations with annual operating budgets of over $50,000. Many members live and learn to work within this environment. Officers within each chapter are elected to manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. These officers are assisted by members serving on committees and by alumni who act as advisors. Additionally, many organizations have regional and international leadership conferences where students learn a variety of leadership skills. Finally, members also can serve on a variety of university and Greek Council governance, judicial, and other Greek life sub-committees. Fraternities and sororities provide a solid foundation in leadership training that prepares students for the demands and responsibilities needed for the future.What sort of alumni connections can I make?The role of the alumni as advisors or International Greek officers and consultants is substantial. Lifetime friendships expand beyond individual chapters to include all members of the national and international Greek life community. Alumni organizations help students network for potential employment opportunities after graduation, and keep in touch through newsletters, correspondence, meetings, and special alumni events. Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. has alumni connections at various locations globally. We have sisters nationwide that have excelled in many fields of professional life. This allows for great opportunities for networking post-undergrad.Is it worth joining DPO as an upperclass student?Yes! Joining DPO in any stage of your college career can benefit you in many ways. We recognize that post-Baccalaureate programs and employers are searching for graduates who are well-rounded and knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects and issues. Involvement and leadership within the organization will help you develop these skills to use in the real world. Why do you have special names and numbers?Each woman who undergoes the new member education process is given a number and name for internal purposes. Each member has a number, sister name and line name. The line name is the same for the group of ladies who goes through the process during the same time period. These unique names reflect the identity of each member within the sorority.What is a cultural Greek organization?UGA has four umbrella Greek councils that are comprised of many fraternal organizations: The Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC), the Pan-Hellenic Council (PHC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). UGA's cultural Greek organizations are a part of the MGC. The new generation of cultural-interest organizations have arisen to serve the interests of communities whose numbers in the traditional Greek system are historically small and dispersed. These organizations are catered towards a particular purpose, for example the South Asian interest organizations such as Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. Many of the cultural interest organizations are part of a fairly recent nationwide movement of Greek life catered towards the upliftment of minority students by providing them with the opportunities not found elsewhere. These organizations also tend to be quite smaller than the typical fraternity or sorority.What is the difference between joining DPO and any other cultural organization on campus?Delta Phi Omega can provide you with all of the opportunities from the other organizations through one central venue. As a social, service, and academically based sorority, the organization touches base with each aspect of university life. Additionally, DPO has countless opportunities for growth and leadership and builds relationships for life. Membership with Delta Phi Omega does not end when one graduates; we strongly believe that sisterhood is a journey beyond college.
