The DMC gets a new Chair!
And we dont mean we have unearthed a Chipperfield in the basement! Mark unexpectedly decided to step down as the organisations Chair at the AGM. He said he had held the post for 4 years and it was time for some new blood to take the helm. Lucy Knight was voted into the post and we'd like to welcome her on board. As a mum with 7 children, a BIG job at Devon County Council and a chicken coop with a loitering fox Lucy is the perfect person to organise the mountains of work which we have undertaken in the last six months and take us through the next stages of our development, including some new accreditation, new partnerships and some new exciting projects !!
Bar Deep has now opened on the Lower Deck of the Lighthouse!!
We going to be honest, we need revenue. Look at it this way, Bar Deep is now the only cafe bar in the Bay where 10% of the money spent on alcohol goes to support a youth project. Upstairs though is staying totally alcohol free and will remain dedicated to under 18's. We have an alcoblow on the door so we can test if people coming in have been drinking and extra security to make sure no one crosses between Deep and the main venue. Deep will also be playing a vital part in the music hub. Disappointingly a lot of bands havent wanted to come and play at a venue without alcohol (despite being the only venue in the Bay that can really guarantee a 300 strong audience!) so they too will now be able to play at the Lighthouse. Deep is family friendly during the day with a stonking menu and the music starts after 9pm when the smaller people sleep.
Youth Music Power Play Funding
Working with Targeted Youth Support at Torbay Council we have a new project for 12 - 19 year olds called WIRED UP. We'll be taking loads of different music making activities to local communities to get young people making their own music in their own spaces. With gigs to get them interested we want to set up a steering group of young people that will tell us how it should be. So if you fit the age group, want to explore some new music and get your own skills come down to the Lighthouse for the Launch Gig on June 2nd : massive bands, a break dance crew and some brand new Dub Step on the toones!
