COFFEE with ANDY WARHOLIf I could spend an afternoon with an artist it would definitely be with Andy Warhol. He is my favorite artist; I would be nervous to death if he actually rises from the grave and meets me for coffee! I will have so many questions regarding EVERY little thing that happened in his life. I want to discuss things about his art work and his thought processes and how he came about to his great career.I would take Andy Warhol to Starbucks and we would both order double mocha latte with lots of whip cream. So I start out with my first question. So Andy, why do you do what you do? Andy Warhol puts down his cookie and responds with crumbs on this mouth and coughs a little before saying, Well, I love making art and movies. My subject and my theme is something very dear to my heart. I wanted to do something different! Something new! So experimentation is definitely important to me. He stares behind me for a second, smiling mischievously, turns around and asks the waiter for his phone number. I was speechless as (surprisingly) the waiter gave Andy his phone number along with extra whip cream on his second mocha latte. I tried my best to concentrate on my next conversation by ignoring them both and on whatever it was I was holding. Andy, I have a question regarding one of your movies called Sleep. What purpose does it serve when the whole movie display a man sleeping? He barely moves the entire eight hours! It was like the most boring movie ever made.Andy gives me his full attention and said You are correct! Bravo! and he claps his hand like a mad manawkward silence follows. Now I really am thinking that Im talking to a weirdo. What do you mean? What did I say? Abruptly, he burst out with a hysterical laugh making the waiter drop the tray with cups of cappuccino, espresso, and three pieces of brownies flying in the air. It was like a scene with slow motion used in a Matrix sequel. Andy continues, Boring is the whole point of the movie Dedee. Dedee is my nickname and I was thrilled he was addressing me like a good friend. He keeps on, Why do movies always have to be happy and interesting all the time? We always overlook at the most common human emotion. In the end something so simple is what interesting. What he said is so true. I felt enlightened by his twisted way of thinking. It was so simply brilliant! I never thought of that until he mentioned it. Artists and filmmakers capture pretty images representing what everyone wanted to see but not the way things actually are.Right after our coffee break at Starbucks, we decided to go to Vidal Sassoon to get a new hair cut, they are well known for their radical snips! Andy had been complaining about his bad hair dye ever since Studio 54. Its bugging me so much so we decided we might as well get a new hairdo altogether. Andy wanted mullet and I wanted dreadlocks! Once we arrived there I chickened out! I was afraid that my mother would disown me because of my new hairdo so I decided to lean more towards the conservative side. But you know what they say once you get to inhale those intoxicating smells of hair dye you might as well..dye your hair! So I dyed my hair blasting pink, probably blinding anyone within a five mile radius. As we end our day, Andy will probably go back to wherever it is he came from, but we had a blast. It is the greatest day to hang out with the most well known artist of all time. I learn that sometimes its okay to do what you think is right rather than following the foot steps of other people. Its okay to experiment, and be radical about the idea. Things dont always have to be pretty. He taught me that a fat man with oily, hairy back can be the most captivating subject to the image you can capture on the paper of film. It made a huge impact on me because it changed the way I view art; I learned that art doesnt always have to be beautiful or extreme. It could just be whatever that come to mind and expresses you to the fullest.
