Recently, I took our dog, Casey, to a groomer who called out her partner when I introduced Casey as a cockapoo. Theirs jaws dropped when I asked them to trim the soft white fur. "That's not an undercoat," they told me. "That's called a 'skirt.' Your dog is a King Charles Cocker Spaniel."
I had to take a second look at my freckle-faced little dog--a King Charles Cocker Spaniel! It sounded so important! So regal! I couldn't wait to tell my family.
Something like that happens in my new book, Me & Jack. Here's what the story is about: Joshua knows how to play new kid: hang back, don't talk too much, become invisible, especially if your dad is an Air Force recruiter during the Vietnam War. When Joshua rescues Jack from the pound, they bond instantly, but after a few unsettling events, Joshua must fight for his home, his dad, and his beloved dog.
"Me & Jack is well paced and keeps readers focused and concerned about the characters and their development." School Library Journal
"Will bring tears to even the hardest of hearts." Examiner
"Joshua is vividly depicted through his first-person narration and amusing interior monologues, and the conflicts he deals with are effectively realized. In all, it's an entertaining boy-and-dog adventure set against a not-often-depicted era of political strife thats notably similar to the present." Kirkus Reviews
"Danette Haworth writes with warmth and an expert eye; she knows the nuances of a young boy's heart and mind. The relationships she builds between Joshua and his father, Jack, new friends and the community gives the reader no choice but to surrender to the gentle cadence of this first-person narrative while an ugly war colors the backdrop in the lives of these characters." Biblio Reads
