PRINCESS Yachts has been granted permission to erect what may be Plymouth's biggest building, creating hundreds of jobs.At the heart of the complex will be a five-storey high, 300,000 sq ft production hanger for £10million superyachts.Work on the first phase of the development, worth £15million, could now start this year.

The former Naffi Bulding is currently being demolished and will be replaced by student accomadation which will include 552 student bedrooms and a surf shop. The project is expected to be completed in september 2012.
The Old Woolworths is to be demolished and replaced by a tower block consisting of a 23 storey core, which will be approx. 1.5 times the height of the civic centre, surrounded by a 21 storey tower on one side and a 13 storey tower on the other. Demolition of the existing 3 storey high woolworths is to begin in JULY 2010.

The Recession and Plymouth?
The recession has caused problems throughout the UK and beyond! Plymouth hasn't been any exception... to some extent! Although times have been difficult, unemployment levels have fallen (however by a miniscual amount). In addition to this many retail outlets in Plymouth have remained open whereas many other places around the UK saw a higher more noticeable rate of closures of businesses in the retail sector.
In the city centre, there were nearly 1.5 million visitors in June 2010, a whopping 230,000, or 18 per cent, more than last year.
Despite a slight decrease in like-for-like footfall throughout July, when there were nearly 1.6 million visits, many fashion stores have reported huge increases on last summer's sales, while the number of vacant city centre units remains at least two per cent below the national average.
