the design:

competing teams are challenged to design a building comprising of three connected dwellings; each of the dwellings must have active and passive solar technologies to achieve near-zero energy solutions.

the awards:

three winning entries, as determined by a peer review judging process, will receive cash prizes of $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000.

the contestants:

the competition is open to individual students or student teams.

the first phase of the competition - october 9th

the competition gives an anonymous and placeless site for participants to design the multi-family zero energy house. we decided to put a place to our site in order to work with a context and site specific information. this allows us to take a realistic approach to the project by implementing code regulations, climatic conditions, and demographics to our design.

athens is located just 1.5 hours east of atlanta, georgia and is home to the university of georgia, athens. livability.com rates athens as one of the top college towns, known for its entertainment, music, and arts culture. granted the city is known as a college town, athens is rated as one of the top places to retire, due to its multiple retirement communities and homes, making it a multi-generational demographic.

athens was also rated as #2 for the top greenest small cities in america. a huge bicycle movement has overtaken the city and includes 18 miles of bike lanes and an additional 60 miles of multi-use and shared roads.
