Demar Douglas's artistic journey began on his second birthday, after painting numerous three-foot high murals on his parents' wall. Recognizing his potential, his parents invested in art materials to feed their son's creativity. Demar has been an artist all his life. Its as if he were doing finger paintings in the womb. When he was 4 years old, he set out to be an artist. While he was in early elementary school, after watching every Disney film and reading many comic books, he realized that artists were actually paid to create art. Demar then recruited the top artist at his school, and like Voltron, they came together and formed N.D.C. (New Drawing Crew). Together, the young entrepreneurs set out to make a reputation for themselves, and earn a little extra money for the llatest X-Men comics. They took pride in being able to draw posters of any character, from Spiderman to Ninja Turtles. They also created their own line of comics which they sold at the student bookstore. N.D.C. crumbled when its creators entered junior high school. Not to be discouraged, Demar quickly stepped up his craft and began doing realistic portraits. During his time in college he began receiving commercial projects, and he was well on his way to becoming an illustrator, or background painter for animation. But the desire to express his own emotions and create his own characters was too strong. While in college, he met fellow artist Jackson Collins who was selling his art on Venice Beach with his wife and son by his side. Jackson truly opened Demar's eyes. He will never forget Jackson's profound words. Jackson said, "I have a degree, but what kind of life would I have if I was locked away in an office all day. I can make my living and still see my son's first steps." After Demar's encounter with Jackson, commercial projects took a back seat to his passion. Demar now creates from his heart.
His art represents the essence of his life experience. All of Demar's images appear to him in dreams and he interprets them with the stroke of a brush. During his early carreer Demar assumed the name Blaqwata to find his artistic voice. During that time he explored many differnt styles and themes in his art. It wasn't until some life changing events took place did he find that voice he had been searching for. The metamorphosis took place December 26th 2008. Frederick Douglas once said that without strugle there can be no progress. Demar now Armed with paint, canvas and a new perception of life, intends on taking the viewers on a explortation of the imagination. Demar feels similar to Joseph from Genesis. These life-inspiring images keep recurring to him until he paints them out of his mind.
Demar paints stylized surrealism within an abstract compostion finding the beautiful struggle though lifes oppostion.
Recently Demar has been featured on CBS News Eye on the desert, where he painted a live painting. Also to his credit he has taken up a mentorship with his long time Artistic role model Charles Bibbs. He is now currently illustrating children’s books for Michael Colyar, and working on a new body of work for gallery shows to span the better half of 2012
