PHOTOGRAPHY: START YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Ive owned my own photography business for many years and after a large windfall I have decided to sell my photography business and live my remaining years undergoing personal photography projects. So for all of you aspiring photographers out there I thought I would make this simple website to give you a helping hand in getting your professional photography business off the ground.
BUILD A STRONG PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIO
Without this you are going to struggle from the start. If you are new to photography then there is only one way to go offer your portrait photography services, event photography services and wedding photography services out for free. This can either be working with an established professional photographer or by putting ads in the local press, gumtree etc. to do photo shoots for people. There are a lot of people out there that just dont have the money to spend on professional photographers so you will be doing you both a favour.
MAKE CONTACTS THAT CAN LEAD TO PHOTOGRAPHY WORK
I know many photographers that team up with other photographers so that if one of them gets a booking that they cant do as they are booked on a photo-shoot elsewhere then they pass it on.
Use your head if you want to get into nightlife photography and you have a friend that is a DJ then ask if there are any openings or any big events where they will need a photographer. If you do become established then you can do your DJ friend a return favour by getting him gigs with other clubs that you are photographing with. Thanks to South London Photographer for this advice.
DISPLAY YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY WORK
Two words photography website!!! Have your own website to display that you are a professional photographer for hire. You can also display your photographic portfolio here. You dont have to have 1000s of photographs on here, just display your favourite or most popular photos to grab peoples attention. It is well worth learning about SEO (search engine optimisation) so people find you.
ALWAYS CARRY YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS CARDS
handing a business card to someone that you meet in the pub could be life changing. You never know! Always give a business card to anyone that you have done a photo-shoot for. There may be a time that they are chatting with their friends and someone needs a photographer. They can then instantly pass on your details. This alone wont win you lots of business but I guarantee that if your clients are happy with your photography work then this approach will win you at least some business.
BE PERSISTENT AND BELIEVE IN YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS
Be confident in your own ability. If you dont believe in yourself how would expect someone else to??
