Deep Eddy Mural Dedication: City's new public artwork celebrates community and history of Deep Eddy PoolAustin, TX - The colorful and surprising history of Deep Eddy Pool, the oldest swimming pool in Texas, has come to life as part of a permanent art installation of tile and mirror at this iconic Austin site. The City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) program announces the completion of this new public artwork which flanks the hike and bike trail access ramp on the northwest side of the pool. This began as an artist-initiated, community-based project in 2006 when artists Wanda Montemayor and Lisa Orr partnered with the Friends of Deep Eddy to begin raising funds, and worked with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, eight schools across Austin, and seven non-profit organizations in the planning of this project. In June 2010, the Austin Arts Commission approved the full funding of this mural project through the Austin Art in Public Places program as part of the Deep Eddy Pool Shell Capital Improvement Project.A public dedication for the mural will be held Sunday October 16, 2011, 5-7 pm at the Deep Eddy Pool (401 Deep Eddy Drive). There will be a short ceremony at 5:30 pm including a proclamation for the project by Mayor Leffingwell and recognition of the many people who participated in the creation of this artwork. The public is invited to come learn more about the artwork, the pools history, and to celebrate with refreshments donated by Jim-Jims Water Ice, Magnolia Cafe, Mangia Pizza, Maudies TEX MEX, Randalls and Thundercloud Subs. Music will be provided by East Side Dandies, Inside Out Steel Drums and Khabele Jazz Band. T-shirts provided by Dell Childrens Hospital will be distributed to project volunteers. The entrance fee to the pool will be waived from 2-8pm on October 16th.

Deep Eddy Mural Project Promo

The Deep Eddy Mosaic Mural Project is seeking people who have a historical story about Deep Eddy for a documentary the Project is making about the pool. We want the documentary to convey the pool's rich history and the project to create a mosaic mural that is capturing the interest of students all across Austin and teaching the the pool's history.

Here is the promo for the documentary and the project. KLRU has written a letter of intent to air the 26 minute documentary three times during prime time and syndicate it for two years. Art In Public Places has funded the mural, and we are still seeking funding for the documentary.

There was a wonderful sense of community around the work. Most of my work with mosaic art occurs when I am alone in my studio. Getting the opportunity to spend time with other people that are passionate about their art was a joy. I spent most of my time cutting the colored mirror ribbons that would become water in the mural. I find cutting and breaking glass to be therapeutic for me. It was especially fun to get to cut free form shapes -- there was no way to make a mistake! Finally, I loved the idea of contributing to something that will enhance Deep Eddy Pool. I have visited the pool many times over the years, alone, with my hubby and with friends. I particularly remember several afternoons at the pool with a friend and her toddler - that toddler graduates from high school this year! Deep Eddy is a wonderful Austin treasure and I feel privileged to have had a chance to be part of this project.Monica Meadows_____________________________Deep Eddy Mural is, corny as it sounds, the gift that keeps on giving. Austin and Deep Eddy Pool in particular, are ultimately the lucky beneficiaries of the genius of Wanda and Lisa, but many of us were fortunate to stumble upon this project and be welcomed into the magic of the process. I live in West Texas and the highlight my last few months commute to Austin - on average every 2 or 3 weeks - was racing down to the Deep Eddy site at the end of a relatively grueling day and immersing myself in the mural love until twilight. Part of the multifaceted beauty of this wall of wonder is that all hands were welcome, no matter their level of expertise, even if (occasionally) that meant removing a small part of that enthusiastic work the next day :) ....and so we worked and learned and laughed and exchanged stories of our lives and this beautiful wall revealed itself day by day. It is the culmination of years of planning, research, designing, fundraising, creating, teaching, community collaboration, but most importantly it has been a true labor of love. What transpired at the "Wall" was amazing and transformational in many ways. We came together to turn something plain into a thing of beauty and brilliance, and it in turn gave so much back in return.The whole experience for me, and I think I speak for others, was truly inspiring and enriching. It was HOT (the hottest summer in Texas history!) and the conditions fought us constantly but we were steadfast in our vision and commitment. We were a team and going to win this great challenge. Piece by piece we assembled a picture of the past and shared hopes, dreams, favorite quotes, and names of loved ones in each little tile. At the end of every work day we stood back and took pride as our vision came more into focus. We talked and shared our life stories with intimate details, as we spread thin set and carefully laid each piece. We became a family and grew to love each other in a way that only happens when you go through a long and life-changing experience together.And for me it was a serendipitous adventure as well. I had not planned on spending the summer of 2011 at the "Wall" but plans change and suddenly my best laid ones fell to the side and time freed itself. Maybe it was some sort of divine intervention, a lucky coincidence, or a friendly voice that echoed in my mind, but to whomever or whatever, I owe a debt of gratitude. Thank you for sharing this special opportunity with me, for allowing me to express myself in each piece of blue and green, ripply glass I scored and cut to make the water that flows throughout the mural.For years to come this will be a special place to visit and reminisce. To remember how hard it was but how invigorating, how good it felt each time a person came up to the fence to declare what a cool and awesome mural we were making and how much they appreciated what we were doing. To know we've left our mark on this great place is both gratifying and humbling.Ana Borne_____________________________The first time I visited Austin in 1977 was in the middle of August. The 110 degree day sucked every drop of energy from me, and I couldn't begin to imagine living in this town, as my then boyfriend was suggesting. But then, on the second day of that visit, I learned about Barton Springs, and after diving into the exhilarating, crystalline water, I fell in love with Austin. It wasn't until five years later that I discovered the modest Deep Eddy Pool, sitting inconspicuously along the western end of Town Lake. Its quiet beauty attracted me, especially once I had children who felt comfortable in the pool's shallow end. My daily swim has kept me grounded through the various upheavals and challenges of my life. I consider the water sacred because it sustains so many people. It keeps running clear and cold, even in this terrible summer of drought. When the city of Austin built the ramp from the pool's parking lot down to the hike and bike trail, at first, its seemingly vast concrete wall horrified me. But over the next couple of months, as I swam, I began thinking of the ceramic tile murals Gaudi created on concrete park benches in Barcelona, Spain. I remembered the mosaic murals deep in the subway caverns of New York City, the amazing mosaics of Isaiah Zagar in Philadelphia. And it hit me: the concrete ramp facing the Deep Eddy Pool begged to be covered with a ceramic tile mural that celebrated Deep Eddy Pool. I approached Christie Rodgers, an Austin ceramics teacher who specializes in making tiles. Christie immediately felt enthusiastic about the idea, but we realized the project required more than two people. It was soon afterwards that I met Wanda Montemayor, my younger son's art teacher at Fulmore Middle School. At Back to School Night she told the parents about the extremely large mosaic mural she was making with her students for part of Fulmore's southern facade. Wanda was the person I had been looking for! As soon as I told her my idea, her face lit up, and within days she had the great idea that children all across Austin would make the tiles for the mural in their art class. The parent of another one of Wanda's students was Lisa Orr, a nationally recognized ceramic artist. Wanda approached her about joining us in the project. Lisa loved the idea, and therein began a wonderful collaboration that has resulted in a fabulous work of public art that adorns Deep Eddy Pool like a jeweled crown. An unexpected result of the collaboration has been the community that the mural brought together. First that community consisted of the art teachers from Austin's school who agreed to participate. Then, as we installed the mural this past summer, magic happened. People joined us-- friends, family, swimmers, joggers-- people who saw the mural come into being and fell in love with its beauty. We all pushed up our sleeves, got our hands and faces and arms dirty, and discovered friendship. In those evenings working together under the pecan trees, feeling the lovely breeze off the lake, we relished our time together. Our community, alongside the colors and texture of mural, created joy. The mural enriched all of us who worked on it, and we are honored to now present it to our fellow Austinites. May it grace your lives as it continues to grace ours. Leila Levinson_____________________________I didn't know about the project until one day in June when I went swimming at the pool. By then at least half the tiles were in place, and it was a stunning sight when I walked out of the bathhouse and caught the glint of all the little glass pieces amidst the cascading waves of colors. That night I went to the Friends of Deep Eddy website and emailed Wanda asking if I could be involved. From the first evening when I showed up, she greeted me like a long lost friend, and I truly felt like one after just a few hours working and chatting with other volunteers. Each time I came back to the site, a volunteer taught me a different job, and much to my amusement, I was frequently given some "tall person" assignment, working on a spot too high for others to reach but too low to bother with scaffolding. Chiseling out excess dried "butter" was by far my favorite task. I found it quite gratifying to clean up an area and make the surface even and ready for grout, though I think I was alone in that sentiment.On one of the final evenings, towards the end of the project, Wanda bounced in with her characteristic enthusiasm--still not flagging after a couple of months of nonstop work--and displayed a collection of fish tiles she had made with volunteers names on them. When she showed me one with my name, I felt like I had just been crowned the Princess of Deep Eddy. I was so honored to be recognized for contributing at all, with my measly few hours of work on this five-year-long masterpiece. I swim at Deep Eddy all summer long, and I meet my husband there every Sunday night in the summer after he rides his bike around Lady Bird Lake. It has always been my absolute favorite place in Austin, and now, thanks to Wanda and Lisa and their amazing crew, I feel like there's a little part of me there and I've been able to play a tiny role in preserving and enhancing the history, beauty, and joy of the place. Wanda and Lisa, y'all are true heroes to me!Sara McCabe_____________________________It was impossible for me to conceive the size and magnitude of this Deep Eddy Mural Project in the spring of 2010. The design was on a computer screen, consisting of what seemed like millions of PhotoShop layers and images. Even when I received the life-size print-outs of my selected section of the design I didn't fully 'get it'. For the section assigned, we had to create the clay tiles twice using the design printout as a template/pattern. The first time ended up being a valuable learning experience. The second set of tiles were great! Thinking in such enormous terms for this mural proved to be really challenging for me.In June, when I was working on the mural at Deep Eddy everyday, all day, I began to understand the big picture..the enormity of the mosaic/mural. Being a transplant from elsewhere, I do not have the Austin historic-loving genes. On the table, the class 8 x 8 foot piece of the swimming pool seemed enormous on the studio tables but when we placed it on the wall it was such a small section of the entire project. What a miracle that Lisa and Wanda made each section fit together in such a beautiful way!This was the first time I have been involved with a public project of this magnitude. I'm glad to be able to make a contribution. Beatrice Baldwin_____________________________I learned about the Deep Eddy project when Wanda Montemayor pitched the idea of a community mural at the pool during a meeting of several art therapist's a few years back. I thought to myself at the time, and may have mentioned to Wanda, that my ancestor, Charles Johnson, once owned the land where Deep Eddy now stands. When I showed up to help with installation this summer I did not realize Charles would be included on the mural.It was a wonderful experience to be an artist and art therapist helping with the project. It was even more meaningful to me since I am the great great granddaughter of Charles Johnson. My son, Eli, also assisted and we enjoyed working together. Lisa Orr, the other artistic director for the project, joked that we were Deep Eddy Royalty. I have to say that all the artists and volunteers who showed up day after day in the middle of the drought and heat were Royalty indeed. Workshops OUTREACH ACTIVITIES FOR 2009October 17, 2009 Workshop #1 with Breakthrough Collaborative--Breakthrough provides a path from middle school to college for students who will be first-generation college graduates. Breakthrough teens learned about the project, the history of Deep Eddy and how they can become part of the history and a part of the community. Discussion was held about their present interests and visions for their future. They created a ceramic flag tile that had symbols of their future and strengths. They shared their ideas with a large group discussion. All teens were 9th and 10th graders in a student to artist/teacher ratio of 8:1.November 14, 2009 Workshop #2 with Breakthrough Collaborative--Breakthrough teen participants glazed previously created pieces. Shared similarities of ideas in small and large group discussion.OUTREACH ACTIVITIES FOR 2010April 21, 2010 Safeplace Activity.Safe Teens Awareness Group (STAG)12 teens living at the Domestic Violence shelter ages 12 17.Teens are introduced to the project and taught about the colorful history of Deep Eddy Pool. They are invited to become a participant in the mural that helps create a bond between themselves and the larger community. Teens each created a flag decorated with words and symbols of their identity and future hopes. There was a 1-4 ratio of mental health professional or artist to teens. They processed and made concrete ideas of their futures and their talents in their own unique flag tile made out of clay. SafePlace is and organization focused on domestic violence prevention and immediate services to families that experience domestic violence and exists to end sexual and domestic violence. Nationally recognized for its innovative and effective programs, they have been providing women, children and men a place of safety, compassion and empowerment in Austin, Texas since 1974.July 13, 2010 Con Mi Papi workshop at the University of Texas campus60-80 participants. 3 successive workshops will be held in one day.Participants will learn about the project, the history of Deep Eddy and how they can become a part of its history and a part of the community. Participants will be lead in a discussion about symbols and strengths of their family. They will create a family of fish with symbols, descriptions or words that describe them. Participants will have the opportunity to process their work in the small groups with a therapist or artist. The ratio is 6-1 participants of artists/mental health professionals. Con Mi Papi is a college preparatory program that provides Hispanic female students and their fathers with the educational and social support needed to encourage academic and personal success. July 21, 2010 Family Drop-In Day at ShelterFamilies will work with a counselor on creating messages for the water scene. They will also be given an age appropriate abbreviated history of the pool. They will have the opportunity to donate their message to the pool or keep their art piece. This will be hold at SafePlace. SafePlace is and organization focused on domestic violence prevention and immediate services to families that experience domestic violence and exists to end sexual and domestic violence. Nationally recognized for its innovative and effective programs, they have been providing women, children and men a place of safety, compassion and empowerment in Austin, Texas since 1974. July 2010 Date Con Mi Madre workshop at the University of Texas campusParticipants will learn about the project, the history of Deep Eddy and how they can become a part of its history and a part of the community. June 15-16, 2010 Workshops with Communities In Schools of Austin Workshop will be held as part of an elementary summer camp program with50-75 children total at two different school sites:6-15-10 Allison Elementary6-16-10 Lanier Middle SchoolThe children will learn about the project, the history of Deep Eddy and how they can become a part of the history and a part of the community. They will learn about the Native American settlement and natural aquatic life of the region and Deep Eddy.Participant will make ceramic tiles of aquatic life and Native American life. They will get to write messages in the water about their future and themselves. Communities in Schools organizes dropout prevention programs that target at-risk children. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES FOR 2011January 15, 2011, Workshop with Big Brothers Big SistersMentors and mentees will learn about the project, the history of Deep Eddy and how they can become a part of the history and a part of the community. The participants will be taught about the local plants and aquatic life of rivers in our area. They will have the opportunity to choose an object together and create a design with words and symbols about their experiences with each other. BBBS is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. It has been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people, serving children ages 6 through 16 in communities across the country.April 21st at 2:30-4:15 at Travis High School Teen Mom's and babies community connection day. Building resiliency within you and your children.1:30 set up and if you are unable to make the April 9th pre-staff40 parents/ baby at Travis. 2 groups 45 minutes long eachWe will create messages of their future/ hopes/ dreams on tiles to be installed at Deep EddyTeen parents will get a goodie bag resource book on how to make art with there babies and some different community resources for education, counseling, Day care assistance etc. Counselors will facilitate the parents and help guide students to the resources. The goal for the teen participants is too feel connected to the community by giving their art to the project, learn new ways to make art with their children, get connected to other resources.Participants can make multiple pieces if they also wish to keep a piece to remember. TEACHER / ARTIST WORKSHOPSSeptember 5, 2009, 1-3pm at O. Henry Middle SchoolAll involved faculty were taught the history of the pool and given teacher packets including all materials they would require and taught the technique of large scale image transfer. Each selected the part of the mural they would be responsible for. May 31, 2010 1-3pm at O. Henry Henry Middle SchoolTeachers and local mosaic artists were taught the technique of reverse mold making. Each participant created various low-relief images of aquatic life from the Colorado River which was to be molded for younger participant use in later workshops. Project was updated with these participants. June 17, 2010 - Workshop with the school-based counselors at Lanier Middle School Counselors will learn the basic skills for tile making as well as be the history of the pool and the project. After this workshop they will know how to teach groups of children to create messages in the water tiles for groups at their respective campuses.Note: Additional teacher workshops will be added as needed. Project Austin Kids, Local Artists Keep History Alive With Mosaic Mural at Deep Eddy Landmark, Oldest Swimming Pool in TexasWanda Montemayor ATR-LPC, Lisa Orr Spearhead 1000-sq-ft Handmade Mural Highlighting Deep Eddys Colorful HistoryAUSTIN, Texas In their quest to bring art to public places, Austin artists Wanda Montemayor and Lisa Orr have been working with local non-profit organizations and art students from eight area middle and high schools creating the tiles for a mosaic mural to be placed at the historic Deep Eddy swimming pool starting in June. "These awesome, talented kids from the schools and the non-profits making these tiles represent Austins varied social, economic and cultural backgrounds but they have at least two things in common: they love Deep Eddy and they love art," said Montemayor. "Throw in a ton of history surrounding the oldest swimming pool in Texas and its a pretty cool project for them."Made from handmade tiles and colored mirror, the mosaic mural will cover 1000 sq. ft. of wall and handicap ramp on the northwest side of the pool. Detailed tiles tell the history of Deep Eddy and are being hand-drawn by the art teachers at participating schools. A half dozen local non-profits have also been conducting tile-making workshops led by art therapists. Since January 2010, the kids have been busy making and coloring the tiles. Their hard work pays off when they apply them throughout the summer, unveiling the final mural in a giant celebration this fall. Deep Eddy Bathing BeachRegistered as a historic landmark, Deep Eddy, next to Eilers Park near the Mopac Bridge on the north shore of Lady Bird Lake, started as a swimming hole in the Colorado River before forming into an eddy. In 1915, A.J. Eilers Sr. purchased the land surrounding the eddy and constructed a concrete pool, the first open-air pool in the state. The City of Austin bought the property in 1935 and transformed it into its main swimming pool. Even though Deep Eddy is man made, the pool water comes from a spring, keeping it chlorine-free and temperatures between 72 and 75 degrees during the summer months.The Deep Eddy Mural will showcase a very colorful and rich past. One hundred years of historical images illustrate, for example, the early Charles Johnson farmstead (now home to the American Legion) and Dam Line Trolley (that ran along the current Lake Austin Boulevard), which took campers and bathers to the early bathing beach and diving rock. The campground added a large slide and zip line over the Colorado River and speakeasies were rampant in the woods during Prohibition. From 1916-1921, two more slides were added as well as trapezes, a set of rings and a 50-foot diving tower and board."We're using historical photographs and information from the Austin History Center to create the themes for the mural. Photographs will be scaled to size so the students can reproduce them in tile, creating beautiful pool, sky and lake colors in the style of old hand-colored postcards."Horses Dive at 8:45Deep Eddy has been a popular attraction for locals and tourists since the 1920s. In the Roaring 20's, Deep Eddy was part circus, part county fair and part waterpark, all enjoyed for a nickel admission. A gang of regular swimmers formed the Deep Eddy Rats, and a festival atmosphere emerged when carnival acts visited like the diving horse (Horses Dive at 8:45), Jack Frieth The Human Fish eating a banana underwater and a man who slid standing up. One of the most popular summertime events still enjoyed today is family-friendly feature films pool-side at sundown. For the Deep Eddy Mural Project, all the art teachers offered after school classes or a free summer camp for students to make mural tiles, with each school covering its own theme from the Native American settlement, movie night, Lorena and her Diving Horse to bathing beauties, river wildlife and birds in flight. The participating non-profits held workshops to create simpler tile shapes like molded fish and triangular flags. A professional artist and art therapist as well as a school counselor, she has 12 years experience working in the arts with the community. Montemayor created the idea for the Deep Eddy Mural while working on her thesis for the Art Therapy Institute.For 27 years, Lisa Orr has been professional potter and student of ceramics. She completed an MFA at the NYSCC at Alfred University in 1992 and later received grants including a Fulbright and a MAAA/NEA. Her work is in numerous public and private collections including the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and the permanent collection of WOCEF in Korea. Currently she teaches, lectures and shows nationally and internationally.This project is funded by the City of Austin Art in Public Places program as part of the Deep Eddy Pool Shell Capital Improvement Project with private funds raised by the artists through the Friends of Deep Eddy.
