Who is Dennis Dennehy???
I have been wondering long and well what to put on this page. Facts, fantasy or stories? Well I've decided to go for facts, I will try to cover a couple of superficial points at least, and go over some superficial points. So here are a few steps along my way:
Born as a Leo in Paddington Hospital, London. That's right, just around the corner from Paddington Station, the place where Paddington Bear was found.
My father was from Kanturk , County Cork, Ireland - a place I knew so well. My father, also a Denis, let me spend much time in his home town , Kanturk, a small farming village not far from Killarney. I spent some of my happiest and most entertaining days there as a youth. There are truly many stories to tell
My mother is from lovely Worcestershire in England on the River Avon. Her hometown was a very picturesque village called Wyre Piddle , not far from Piddle-in-the-Hole, and North Piddle. I had many happy days there too with my grandparents. It was the home of the best fish and chips in the whole wide world! I stayed with my parents till I was 21, living first in London then in Essex.
Went hitchhiking around Scandinavia, up to Lapland, with temperatures around 20 below (Centigrade). Carrying my rucksack, tent and guitar, and almost no money, I could well of died from the exposure. Eventually left Essex and visited Bavaria 3 times, then returned to north England to live in wondeful Ilkley, a town in the Yorkshire Dales. Later returned to Bavaria, a lovely spa town, in the provinces called Bad Kissingen . As time went a family grew with 3 sons who are now grown up and running their own lives.
My first guitar was my brother's right handed guitar, and me being left handed, I left the strings upside down! As a later instructor once said "We'll have you in the Guiness Book of World Records, but I can't teach you anything with the strings upside down."I eventually started to fiddle around more nad more on the guitar, later I could even play it too. Never-the-less over the years I have written some good original sounds. I now have a large repertiore of songs and instrumentals", which I play in concerts: every now and again. And here are some newspaper comments. I also paint in aquarelle with a certain amount of success, go and have a look.
Many people and characters have been responsible in influencing the way I think, especially Walt Whitman , and in particular Paramahansa Yogananda who's teaches how to find God in this life through Kriya Yoga .
Influences
The music is very varied and different, and cannot really be limited or canned into any one direction. The countless influences from, Classical India Music such as Ravi Shankar, or the classics, or philosophers like Walt Whitman, R.W Emerson, or folk singers Peter Paul Mary, or Leonard Cohen, or even pop either the Beatles, Searchers from the 60-70’s or the latest Top 10 or The Corrs. It all goes into making a very mixed bag of music.
Musical Pictures
When one presents one’s own Music it is a little like exposing oneself. That’s why the poetical licence is so important, that is having the freedom to either let the cat out of the bag about the meaning behind his songs or not. Normally Dennehy likes to give a little hint and direction of where the idea for songs or the titles of instrumentals come from. Music is art, and just like a painter who wants to hang his pictures in a gallery, a musician needs to perform and exhibit his ideas and music to an audience. In his own words “I present musical pictures”. It is one thing playing critical and meaningful songs, and another putting them in a framework, which is also entertaining and not monotonous.
Glimpse Into Motion
Dennehys concerts are performed under the Title "Glimpse Into Motion" (the title of his first instrumental). This 'glimpse into motion' stems from the fact that there is motion in everything in the universe, in the cells, atoms, and electrons or in the inter-personal and spiritual relationships. The creative variety in his music is henceforth well presented under this motto, his music can move in any direction he wishes, whether it is in the topic, text or music. It is one thing playing critical and meaningful songs, and another presenting them in a framework, which is both entertaining and critical. Dennis Dennehy is able to combine original and catchy melodies with critical text. Music is art, and just like a painter who wants to hang his pictures in a gallery, a musician needs to perform and exhibit his ideas and music to an audience. In his own words “I present musical pictures”. “I am never too sure whether I should explain my music as poems, love letters, aims, criticisms or whatever”, because as a total concert they do not fall into one nutshell.
Threesome
His very first own guitar was a very cheap one that was his “One Penny Guitar”. The guitar arm stayed on the body only by the fact that the strings were taut. When the strings were taken off the guitar the arm would just hang on like a loose limb. After that first guitar was stolen in Italy, it took a lot of sampling to actually find one that had the right sound. That’s when he bought his Ibanez six-string western. The body was extra large and gave such a warm deep sound. His technique of playing
the guitar upside down and left-handed limits so much how many chords one can play. Re-tuning it in an open E, which can give a completely different fuller sound, bridged that problem. Of course after a while a second guitar had to be found to avoid all that re-tuning. His second guitar is a classical guitar that gave new impulses for new. The third guitar, an American Lakewood western has such a clear sound in the high strings and a good base in the lower.
Schweinfurter Tageblatt writes:
Glimpse Into Motion is Dennis Dennehy’s title for his concerts. His aim is to give the audience a ‘glimpse’ into all kinds of ‘motion’ that can be found in anything from cells, atoms, electrons, inter-personal relationships or spirituality with his own compositions. He took the audience into his world of philosophy. Love and problem-awareness in the Schweinfurter Club ‘DisHarmonie’.
The composer and singer/songwriter Dennehy knows how to communicate his many aspects of his attitude to life with his three left handed guitars. In particular the philosophical influences in life can be recognized in the instrumental compositions. There is often a sound of Indian music to be heard (his modified guitar sounds somewhat like a Sitar. Dennehy has a great interest in the Indian teaching of Kriya Yoga, even Rock and Pop flashes every now and again out of his guitar compositions. He can’t deny his Irish-British background as soon as he accompanies his guitar with text and one feels the flair of an Irish pub.
It is not possible to conform the composer to any one music style. His stand points to controversial topics such as problems and joys of every day life. He is critical of the political rightist movement in Germany, the misuse of drugs and alcohol, and is concerned with the phenomenon of ‘turning a blind eye’ as in the song “The Things we Forgot to Say”. Even the different emotional facets of Love are found in detail in songs such as “Travelling Afar” or “Gustav’s Kiss”. Dennehy packs all these nudges for our thought process in easy melodies such as “Don’t Go” which, as so often a real ‘Catchy’ song, could easily become a hit. This Irish Brit bought up as an Irish Catholic, with the likeable calm character, processes his own experiences in his music. With this type of honesty it is easy to understand the audiences enthusiasm that visibly enjoyed the concert. Christoph Thein
Badene Zeitung writes:
Critical songs packed in easy melodies. The Irishman Dennis Dennehy enthused this audience in the castle cellar, which was a good ambient for the concert. The Castle Ruin Lichteneck gave the right flair on a Saturday night for the Irish Singer/Songwriter Dennis Dennehy. The guitar concert drew more people than expected in the cozy cellar….
The stories in his songs talk of everyday happenings. Some he experienced himself; others were inspired by people he met…. the songs composed by Dennehy himself sound as different as people are. Sometimes melancholic and sad, others fast and happy. A couple of pieces startled with the paradox between content and melody, and he explained he rather takes a liking to critical songs and catchy melodies….
… everyone was amazed at the variety of sounds….
The music gives cause for reflection and concern on topics sich as destroying of the environment. Between his songs he spoke a few clear words regarding the double meaning of critical songs and the stories behind them. Whether it was “Did You Ever” or “Sunny Days and Moonlit Nights”, Dennis dennehy managed to convey and carry over the feeling in his songs to the audience. Their ears became attentive when a long instrumental sounded reminiscent of Indian music echoed throughout the cellar, and the almost meditative atmosphere did nothing to disturb the evening. Patrick Mueller
Schweinfurter Magazin writes:
With Dennis Dennehy is an English singer-songwriter whose roots lie in Ireland, and is performing in the Schweinfurt Disharmonie culture club. His music is a compilation of a great variety of melodies and enigmatic lyrics, a fun selection of songs and instrumental pieces. Topics include personal experiences, love, nature, philosophical approaches, political points-of-view and even aspects of God and the world, sometimes with a critical view.
Saale-Zeitung writes:
In his songs and instrumentals Dennehy reflect the multicultural influences of different apects from various countries and deeper views of life
... the actual musical way Dennis Dennehy entered in his youth with just playing around on his “one penny guitar ". His entry into playing with more with sophisticated instruments came with a six-string classical guitar. After a long search he found an Ibanez Western and with its extra-large body delivers a very specific full warm and mellow tone, which he wants for his music.
All in all an interesting mix, which is reflected in his concerts “Glimpse into Motion “ which can be seen basically with a view that everything is on the move. Dennehy is open to new influences and new directions, with no obvious influence from his the Irish-English-German roots. His themes, lyrics and style keep him constantly "in motion." Klaus Werner

Inter-personal relationships are never easy, long term relationships even less so. Everyone wants to be understood and loved, but we have so many desires, thoughts and feelings which are not outspoken. In this poetry of this song is the aim to stay at someones side till that person understands every word, smile and mind.
