If you or a loved one have ever heard the words "You have cancer", you know the fear and disbelief of facing your own mortality...the reality that life always ends in death, sometimes sooner than we expect. But does a cancer diagnosis mean we will pass on from this life now or as a result of this disease? Sometimes the answer is 'yes'. However, with the advances made in medical science, more and more frequently the answer is 'No, this disease may not and does not necessarily have to take my life.'
While the end result may be hearing the words 'You are cancer-free', the battle against life-threatening illness can leave the patient and caregivers worried, depressed, confused, and tired. Whether you are a patient or a family member/caregiver, the journey can take an emotional toll. By working in cooperation with your medical doctors, we work to address emotional conditions that emerge during your journey so you can focus your energy on fighting the disease, not your emotions. We work to support your mind and soul as your physician works to heal your body.
We believe effective emotional support in cooperation with your healthcare team is an important part of your overall care. Whether you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening/life-limiting illness, caring for your emotional health is an important part of coping before, during, and after treatment.
Trauma is just another word for situations people find themselves in that may be, or may be perceived as, life-threatening. Whenever we have an experience in which we feel we may be seriously harmed, or even die, our emotions are rattled to the core. Whether someone experiences a serious accident or illness, severe abuse or mistreatment, or physical or sexual assault, the event is sometimes so intense the immediate response of the body and mind is to avoid the very possiblity of the event reoccurring in the future.
Problems occur because the natural defenses to avoid future pain tend to be 'turned on' at all times, in many situations, and not just when a person is in a threatening or unsafe environment. Sometimes the person who has experienced a traumatic event begins to view all situations as 'dangerous'. When this happens, relationships can be negatively impacted. As a person avoids people and situations to remain safe, they lose critical support systems and become more isolated. In severe cases, a person may even become afraid to leave their home or may find their ability to complete everyday tasks at work and in the community more difficult.
Trauma does not have to rule your life. If you have experienced a traumatic event, chances are you will never be as if trauma never occurred in your life. However, you can deal with the pain and gain understanding into how these events have impacted you. By doing so, many times people learn the pain and experience is only a part of their life and not the 800 lb. gorilla it often feels like prior to treatment.

Have you ever felt not quite yourself, more tired than usual, not as interested in regular hobbies and activities? Many people feel this way from time to time, but when this feeling hangs on for more than a week or two, you may be experiencing something more than the occasional 'blues'. Depression can make you feel less capable, tired, worthless, and irritable. In some cases, it can even bring thoughts of ending your life because it 'isn't worth living anymore'.
Depression comes in many forms and for many of reasons. Sometimes depression can be caused by physical factors such as a thyroid problem. Many times, it results from emotional pain and unresolved conflicts. When you are experiencing depression, it is important your healthcare provider look at both physical and emotional aspects of your condition so proper treatment can be delivered.
Whether your depression originates from physical or emotional factors (or both), your symptoms are telling you something is out of balance in your life or in your body. When symptoms persist, evaluation by a heatlhcare professional is an important first step in working toward feeling better.
Anxiety is worry or fear that gets a bit out of control. While it is normal and healthy to feel uneasy about things from time to time, sometimes worry can become persistent and keep us from interacting with others, or our environment, the way we normally would.
Many times worry or fear is about a certain situation (ie. riding in an elevator, being in closed spaces, animals, being in a large crowd, etc.) and a person can point to an event, or series of events, that led to their being concerned about that particular thing. Other times, anxiety is less definable - a feeling of overall dread and apprehension that something bad will happen where the reasons for the fear are not apparent.
In either case, anxiety can range from being a small inconvience or an emotionally crippling condition. Like depression, it can be caused by both emotional and physical factors. When appropriate, evaluation by a physician may be required to properly treat excessive worry or fear.
Sometimes a comprehensive assessment of mental and emotional functioning is helpful in determining how to address problems a person is experiencing. When this is needed, we provide a comprehensive review of a person's functioning called a Psychological Evaluation. This in-depth assessment requires three to four appointments and includes the administration of psychological testing.
We receive many requests from physicians for psychological evaluation of a patient when the reasons for their symptoms are not readily apparent or an opinion is needed to determine if physical symptoms may be originating from mental or emotional factors. When the evaluation is complete, we can provide you with an overview of your current functioning and send a report to your physician that provides important information and recommendations.
More than anything else, a comprehensive psychological evaluation helps your heathcare team make good treatment decisions by providing information about what may be out of balance and in need of clinical attention. When mental and emotional factors are leading to physical symptoms, addressing these conditions often results in relief from the physical symptoms and an improved outllook on life.
