Top Black Models...2011 has been huge for black models, as more and more have been rocking runways and editorials from New York to Paris to Milan. Vogue Italia inaugurated their Vogue Black website, and Alber Elbaz of Lanvin closed the brand’s Spring/Summer 2011 show with 6 black models. While 2010 was great for black models in general, it was an exceptional year for Ajak in editorials, advertising campaigns, and on catwalks. The 19-year-old was called a ‘breakout star’ by Models.com due to her successful run during Spring/Summer 2010 shows in Paris. The Sudanese model who calls Australia home worked it for Lanvin, Chloe, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, and Jean Paul Gaultier–quite a coup for a new model. In 2010, she also appeared in Interview Magazine, and of course worked it for Benetton’s Spring/Summer 2010 campaign.Ajak Deng was born December 7, 1989 in Sudan and fled to a Kenyan refugee camp with her parents and four brothers and three sisters in 2003 after civil unrest erupted. During that time her mother passed away from malaria and she became the mother to her six month old sister. By 2005 her family was given the opportunity to move to Australia, Ajak has not looked back. Ajak quickly began to model and made her debut at the 2008 Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, since than she has been in high demand in Australia and abroad. She is currently represented by Chic Management.
