What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis means porous bones. It is a disease in which bones
become very brittle and more fragile, thereby increasing the risk of
fracture.
Osteoporosis can affect any bone but the most common fracture sites are the wrist, hip and spine.
Despite the misconception, osteoporosis is not an old ladie's disease.
It can affect people of all ages, both male and female. According to the
Irish Osteoporosis Society, 1 in 5 men and 1 in 2 women over the age of
50 will get a fracture because of osteoporosis in their lifetime. The disease can even affect children and teenagers.
How Is it Prevented?
Simple! Just eat healthy and excersie regularly! Increase the amount of calcium you consume everyday and you can prevent your bones becoming porous and weak.
