Southern Africa, A Photographic Journey
I have seen a few sayings lately that really make me think about the trips that my wife & I have done to Namibia and South Africa; believe it or not, they were posted on a motor bike website. This guy and a couple of mates did a trip through the Namib the hard way and yes, I really do mean the hard way.
Here they are:
“The traveller sees what he sees; the tourist sees what he has come to see.” GK Chesterton, poet, essayist & novelist 1874 - 1936
“..am a firm believer, no one can ever spend serious time in Africa and return the same person, if they do, they never saw Africa...” I know him only as "Rocks", a gnarly adventurer from somewhere in SW Wales, but he does sum Africa up beautifully.

Namibia
South Africa
We've only been there on one trip but we've very definitely fallen in love with the country. The scenery is breathtaking and it's a place where you can run out of adjectives trying to describe what you see.
We've been there twice now and it'd be fair to say that we're hooked. I described South Africa to a mate in Cape Town as being like Australia on steroids!!!
It's not just the animals that make a trip to South Africa what it is. The whole experience is what you go there for, the lodges that we've been to 5 star or whatever rating, they've always been awesome. We have some favourites, Simbambili, Moholoholo and Tshukudu, examples of the different budgets which have all been fantastic. But Simbambili.... spoil yourself one day!
Photography is the best way to try and portray Namibia, the colours though are a challenge. It's different to any place on earth, the desert running down to the sea is not in itself unique but what is unique is the way that the place feels when you are there that makes it different. That's the challenge for the photographer, capturing that feeling and the colours.
There's no place quite like it on earth and if going there doesn't change you, then truly there's no hope for you!
