zed mizar (he declines to use capital letters so we respect his choice of style) came out of the los angeles coffeehouse scene doing electronic music performance poetry that combines psychedelia, sexy science fiction & surreal humor. "i started out as a sideman guitarist playing alt-rock in bars around los angeles & on the road while i was getting my songwriting & poetry chops together" he says. "i was hanging around the venice poetry workshop, which has musician alumni like jim morrison. i started getting readings around town while i continued working as a sideman although by this time i was much more into electronica. eventually i started trying to combine the two into one art form & i started performing it in coffeehouses. i did rap & spoken word vocals to my electronic tracks as well as sing. it was always as much about the words as the vocals. my first efforts were awkward & it took me a long time to develop the original style that is mine now. i was able to see what worked & what didn't, do more of the kind of stuff that went over well. i was already an experienced performer from my rock band days but i discovered that if you are funny & entertaining people will be open-minded about checking out music that is unusual & cutting-edge."
he started to get airplay on internet radio & podcasts, like the early demo of "when the weasels (come out of the wall)" featured on the indyfeed performance poetry podcast. "i still publish poems & have connections to the poetry community" he says, "as well as to the online multimedia community." his music underwent further refinement when he started posting the demos of the songs that would become the album "luminous probe signals" on myspace, soundcloud & elsewhere. the feedback he got from his music artist friends helped him to develop the songs into fully-realized, well-produced recordings. "one of the big changes was that i started playing more guitars on my songs & people definitely liked that & responded well to it, so the album has a lot of very tweaked-out electronic guitar on it, lots of gnarly fuzztones. i developed into a more muscular rocktronica sound from my triphop beginnings. the "spiral city sky" album is a continuation of that process. there is still a lot of poetry on it but it is more song-oriented. you know, when people think of electronica they often think of four-on-the-floor DJ music--my music is definitely electronica but it is about songs as well as dancing."

the first 4 songs on the player are from my upcoming album "spiral city sky". "moon fusion" is a collaboration i did with richard ruttenberg for his album "secret society". "spiral city sky" is the single 6.5 minute edit of the full 15 minute space epic. this is a duet with leslie gage (see blog for more about this song). "gravity sucks (deep space funk)" is my version of the tune i wrote with richard as the title track of his "deep space funk" album. "vortex flush" is probably the hardest-rocking cyberpunk tune i have done so far but the lyrics are pure cyberwack. "return of the howling fiends from oblivion pt. 2 " is the ultrafunk poem rant about the insidious schemes of the pseudo-humanoids. click album thumbnails to buy my first album "luminous probe signals" or the full long version of "spiral city sky" on highest quality mp3.

this visualization of "venusian girl" by chili of amsterdam studio (www.myspace.com/amsterdamstudio) was hatched in a
skype discussion between holland & california & is a truly inspired interpretation that gives new insight into the meaning of the song.
